2TB memstick - Image 1

Like whoa: two terrabytes of data storage?! What the hell are you gonna do with all that? Read 'em and weep 'em buckoes. Sony and SanDisk have announced their joint development project which will expand memory stick formats to proportions yet unheard of.

The first one is a new line for the Memory Stick PRO, tentatively dubbed as the "Expanded format for Memory Stick PRO". This new line includes expanded formats for the entire Memory Stick PRO series, namely PRO, PRO HG, and Micro (M2).

Compared to the current gen of PRO memsticks that can go up to 32GB, this new format will be able to achieve up to 2TB of data storage (damn, that's even higher than what I got on my old, clunky PowerBook!).

Other than the increased storage capacity, everything will pretty much remain the same: same dimensions, same number of pins, same transfer speeds. The new line will also still be supporting MagicGate and Access Control Function.

Now on top of the expanded Memory Stick PRO line, Sony and SanDisk are also set to deliver an entirely new format, one called the Memory Stick HG Micro. It's based on the current M2 format, but will be improved to allow transfer speeds of up to 60MB/s.

The press release didn't include any release dates for the new formats, however, development for these memsticks are already set to start this year.

» THATS INSANE!!!! FREAKIN' 2000GB!!!

seriously what would you do with 2TB on a psp?

i would use it for my computer or ps3 or something.

can anyone imagine the price of these things? (i would guess $500+)

» oooo!!!

I remember getting a computer that had 80 gigabytes.. 80!! I was sooo excited. I couldn't IMAGINE what I would do with all of that space. I didn't buy a computer for years, nor did I change the hard drive (Yes, I ran out of space).. Then like a month ago I decided I'd build my own. So I look online.. I was like WHOA 500 GIGABYTE HARD DRIVES and got two. I'm still in the "I CAN'T IMAGINE FILLING UP ALL THIS SPACE" .. 2 terabytes just seems ridiculous. Give it a few years! Not just so you can actually see yourself filling up the space, but so the price'll come down =X

and THEY SAY WE ARE THE ONE WHO SUPPORT PIRECY c'mon why we will gonna need a 2 TB as a memstick maybe flash disk or as a hard disk but a memstick ummm kinda of weird to have it on psp but if that happen then that mean one of 3 things 1.expand the psp games capicity on the psn lol so the GoW would last longer , 2.lol support the ISO(oh sorry i mean backups) 3.more movies on the way yep avi and HD movies

at last it would be really high in the price +500 $$$ and more that my crappy psp price so i suppose no one will bother with it for the psp community.

» Holy Sh...

Imagine all the pr0n you can load on this! =P

Or you could load the backups of ALL PSP games on this....

No seriously, I can imagine why you need so much space on a PC, but in a PSP? And I don't want to know the prices for these monsters. Another thing I personally would be afraid of is that you can loose these things easily. And if loose a 2 TB which you, let's say, 450 bucks for and all the data that is gone, I can imagine you going to hang yourself

" and THEY SAY WE ARE THE ONE WHO SUPPORT PIRECY c'mon why we will gonna need a 2 TB as a memstick.."

I get your point. A good one at that. But this tech isn't all about piracy. Some memsticks are used in cameras and other digital recording media. If they want to push the HD technology, they have to support bigger capacity memory to bear the brunt of huge files.

» Well.

I own 100+ PSX games and 37 PSP games. I already have a 4gb card full of all the 8bit to 16bit consoles, so I'd get this for the purpose of putting "all" my PSX games and any amount of compatible Sega CD(Picodrive ftw,) PCEngine CD, and Neo Geo CD/MVS games on my PSP.

Then with the possible 1TB of space left on my PSP, I'd just go ahead and add my entire movie collection while I'm at it(which is only about 100-200. Honestly not that big due to the fact that I only buy movies that I think are easily the best of them) entire anime series like Fist of the North Star, Evangelion, Gundam 0079, 0083, and 0087. Then attempt to fill it up with some music, etc.

I can guarantee I'd fit everything I'd want on a 2TB without ever getting it full.

So yeah. Hopefully we get a 2TB Memory Stick Pro Duo. The convenience of having everything you'd want at any time for gaming or entertainment needs is would make it worth the 500.00.

by DrWho1980 - 2009-01-08 06:23
» 80 gigabytes... you call that small?

lol, my first PC had a hard disk of 20MB yeah, Mega Byte. And I was one of the lucky ones, most people those days had no hard disk.

Times have changed, and I'm a bit sad having to say that the current developers and programmers are terrible at optimizing memory and disk use.

Back in those days a single DD(Double Density) disk had a storage of 720 KB and you could fit about 10 games on it. Of Course that wouldn't be possible with the current computers since the current computers use heavier graphics and sounds. Still if games were coded like they were back then then many games would become a lot smaller, faster and less memory consuming.

speaking of memory, one of the most popular home computers back then was the Commodore 64, which had a memory of 64 kilobytes. That included the graphical memory.

Anyway, sorry for bothering you with this... I was just wondering how much more clutter these extra big memory stick will cause.

2TB of storage is more than the actual media and data combined I have. I have lots of DVDs and CDs plus my harddrive but no way they'll reach such ridiculus amount of space

I just got a 16GG micro sdhc plus a photofast adapter for my psp and I was doubting to buy the second 16GB micro cause it is huge. What the hell will I do with 2TB worth of space.

I also was thinking of buying a netbook, but with this kind of space on a tiny card, I guess newer more powerful, lighter, cheaper, netbooks are just around the corner with this cards as HDDs

Yup, I remember having Windows 3.1, but I was very young.. I don't know how I managed all of those DOS games (One Must Fall 2097 and Jazz Jackrabbit were so much fun, and had more replay value than Gears of War, which was made by the same company) as a 5 year-old child, but man. I remember having Jaguar 64 and the Jaguar CD too.

Anyway, you're right.. and also older than 18 I'm assuming haha. One thing that impresses me about the PS3 is the amount of potential it has. I can't wait.

"this new format will be able to achieve up to 2TB"

The key words here are "up to".That being said it might be a while until they actually release 2TB cards at retail. It will most likely go in the usual order: 64GB, 128GB, 256 GB and so on. I predict by the time we actually see a 2TB card we'll be on a next generation PSP.

Seriously doubt they'd sell a 2TB version for $500 (at least at current market prices). In the future, sure. Right now when 250GB SSD's still cost ~$500? Heck no.

For those who can't imagine filling up 2TB, it's terribly easy to fill up a 2TB drive once you already have it. Early last year, I built a 3TB server figuring it'll take me another 2 years or so before I need to upgrade. Well, that's all filled up and 5 months later, I built a new one (currently 12TB, but easily expandable).

Besides, target usage is probably for HD video cameras and 2TB is still small if you're shooting HD.

You would need to have some new feature in the Games folder that would sort the games in alphabetic order or something like that like it does on the PS3.

People that shoot videos, take pictures, watch movies (DVDRips of their own movies), etc. use this much. Pictures add up, especially if you shoot professionally with DSLR's and all the RAW's add up. And also if you make home videos. You need to do alot of compresing and converting. And if your an Audiophile and have all your CDs on your comp. then you need ALOT of room.

Why the jump from 32 GB (an incredibly pricey card) to 2TB? This seems to suggest to me they are using another method to create these cards yet package them in the same manner as the PROs, but I can't imagine how this would not have come to my attention earlier - if this technology exists that is. I'm calling a miscommunicatio n of some sorts, because if this is true, then I'm sure it will eventually become financially reasonable and change the industry in a big way.

You do have an excellent point. As far as I know, all the games ever made for the PSP at most amount to about 200 gigs. Then again, that's if you compress them... Hmm... uncompressed, I wouldn't be surprised if it hit 500 gigs. Then there's also all the genesis roms and snes roms and n64 roms, which can easily hit another 30 gigs.

Still, that's less than 1 terabyte. Lol.

I remember four years ago buying an M3 perfect (that huge GBA flash cart) for $80 and getting a "whopping huge" 512 mb card (or was it a gig?) for about $50. Well, I was under the assumption I'd never need another flash card or compact flash card for my DS. Ever.

Fast forward 4 years to now. I just bought a $6 DS top toy; and an 8 gig SD Micro for about $20. Well... it seems like I can only fit half my games on it. I'm actually looking forward to buying ANOTHER 8 gig SD Micro within the next 6 months just to have the "whole collection" (even then, I'm not sure if it'll suffice). BUT, luckily due to The Federal Moore's Law Act of 1984, every sixteen months or so technology must double in power/storage, BUT stay at the same price (thus every 16 months, current technology is supposed to be cut in half in terms of cost). At the current exponential rate that microsoft products take up space, Microsoft Office Ultra Premium Pro Second Edition Gold 2018 (not to be confused with Microsoft Office Super Premium Pro Second Edition Gold) will probably require a minimum of 32 gigs of RAM and approximately 500 gigs of Harddrive storage. ;) Not a farfetched idea when you consider that Microsoft Office 1997 only took up about 60 megs. Ten years later, Microsoft Office 2007 takes up about 1.5 gigs. >.>

This is just pleading to hack there psps, and even the ps3s to running off ISOs from the memory. I mean seriously, if you could have every game for psp and then some in the ISO format, would you really ever buy another UMD or blu ray game? Someone would make a software for the ps3 also because now you have space to mess around with 25gbs per games. Sony is fallinf off the market already, now this card is going to give them sales in the short run but eventually it will murrrrder them in the long run.
