National Banhammer - German Ministers propose total ban for violent games

Guns and Kids - Image 1In an effort to make their nation violent videogame-free, 16 German Interior Ministers have moved to ask the Bundestag (the equivalent of parliament in Germany) for a total ban on violent video games.

If approved, this won't be just your average banhammer - this is a national banhammer that even goes as far as prohibiting violent game development in the country.

The ministers are planning to get this over and done with before the German elections on September 27th. With the school shootings, like the one in Winnenden back in March, and other acts of violence linked to the playing of violent video games, this bill may have a better chance of success than the one in California and Jack Thompson's attempt in Utah and his letter to Obama.

If indeed this national banhammer is successfully whipped out, gamers would not only say goodbye to their daily dose of gaming brutality. German game developers such as Crytek will have to outsource or even relocate operations to another country, because under this law, even the development of violent games will be banninated.

Well, let's see if they do the same for movies, tv shows, magazines, comics and all other media.... which I doubt!

» Even If

Even if they ban all violent games all together people will still find ways to import games from other country's.

"hmmm... there couldn't be wars without cognition; let's ban thought '

That's what religion is basically.

Anyways, I hope this bill passes, just to give everyone a good example of what it would look like. And if it does, I bet it won't last very long.

» lol.. national socialism reborn!!!

last i checked germany wanted to follow a different path after hitler(west) and more so after unification but its more apparent they arent, just look at some of the laws they have more importantly pertaining to the autobahn. whats next violent or bad lyrics that is like no more rammstien. germany is a great place but come on now, videogames and other media used as scapegoats needs to stop everywhere.

You might wanna get your history straight there, sonny... The ones who discriminated the blacks were you guys, hitler killed JEWS, Sinti and Roma... He was kinda pissed when a black man won a gold medal at the olympics, but at that time, there werent really any black people in germany.

so, when a few conservative *****bags TRY (I'm sure they won't succeed) to ban those games, the whole country is racist? is that how it works in your black and white / good and evil world? i pity you and your kind... and i pity QJ, where comments like these seem to be OK...

HakatoX, please don't just point out what Christians started long ago before naming atheist's biggest mass murders such as Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, and finally Stalin. Just saying. Now I'm waiting for someone to say, "Hitler wasn't atheist" so they can get slammed.

Calm down . Just because people believe in a GOD does not make them bad. George W he did his thing and you're blaming it on his religion ? You need to read a book and see what other factors played in. What would you tell all the innocent people that lost their family members on 9-11? " oh too bad, forget them "? As for the bombings I guarantee you that they were part of some cult or activist group because my church does not condone with mindless crap like that, there are better ways to battle abortion . It's like saying that all Iraqi people are bad when only a couple of them were the ones who plotted the 9-11 and so forth. Oh and Mormons don't even believe in the same GOD as Christians do , ASK anyone! They even have a "PRACTICE" that supposedly makes gay people back to "normal" WTF! Its not the same, and they all have different views. You're always going to have extremists, just like the KKK who believe the white race is superior. Do I believe that junk?, Heck no! But I leave them alone and they have the right to live just as much as you do.

Thank you for giving the people of QJ an insight of what other countries and people think of them . Honestly I don't know why they bring things up like religion and personal opinions into this . Its CRAZY! One guy even said "ban religion" , like if he fought for it in the first place !

If it weren't for those "religious" people and there " ugly wars", his tubby ass would've been sitting somewhere else.

to all the people saying things like "Nazis" or "Fascists":

SHUT THE F*CK UP!!!!!!!

You have no idea what's going on in Germany, you frigging pricks.

And now to the news:

This will never come through, we had these discussions several times, back then when the thing in Erfurt happened. It was the same situation.

And even if it comes through, this will just open a WHOLE new market for importers. And it's actually good that they try to bring this through. These idiots just lost a whole generation of voters.

"It's like saying that all Iraqi people are bad when only a couple of them were the ones who plotted the 9-11 and so forth."

Truly under knowledged, the Iraqis did not plot or plan 9/11, it was Osama Bin Laden and his merry band of Islamists, Al-Qaeda.

Bush attacked Iraq to finish his fathers work, and because it has oil, don't let any government try to tell you what was what until you have read the whole story.

by Serosis - 2009-06-07 01:15
» hmmm

Games on the Wii, any sports game except for boxing and Guitar Hero, that's all I could come up with. Well Spore, Sims, Sim City, any flight simulator that doesn't involve a war.

They might as well ban the internet because there are most definitely violent flash games that anybody can access, even flash games that simulate shooting up a school.

by Roopa132 - 2009-06-07 02:27
» I hate you

I hate every single of you who wrote something about Hitler or Nazis in the comments. Somehow you idiots don't understand that this has NOTHING to do with Hitler but apparently you think everything that has to do with Germany has to do with Hitler...

Now to the Topic: If they really want to do this they lose thousands of voters in Germany. I personally see this as violation of the constitution. Since we get restricted in our freedom to do "whatever we want as long as we don't hurt anybody elses rights"

PS: WHAT THE F*** HAS THIS TO DO WITH HITLER???

» Why not ban art too.

Maybe you can get jail time or fined for drawing a picture of something violent. Also whatever you do, don't take a picture of an animal killing another animal for food. That would be uber realistic. Next step, ban any words that suggest violence, such as hit, mame, stomp, kill, murder, blood, smash.....

Of course in German though.

You have no clue about the mormon faith. They believe jesus christ walked the americas after the resurection.

but what you said had nothing to do with the point I made about christians slaughtering the mormons... wich you are saying is okay from your response.

I am not trying to knock christianity I was just trying to show him there is no innocent faction of faith.

all of them were brought to light through hardships and bloodshed

so if you can actually understand this and not go into a tangent that had nothing to do witth my point... please do the world a favor and shut up and take note I wasnt trying to knock those who believe in god....

cause I too am christian ... but I know that no one is innocent... hell it even says that in the king james bible....

by GodGates - 2009-06-07 04:43
» I agree...

Whenever someone mentions Germany, everyone's firsts thoughts are "Hitler," and "Nazis."

Jack Thompson tried to ban violent video game as well, and why wasn't he called a Nazi?

by PSNDonutDude - 2009-06-07 05:36
» This is stupid but its a start to full on bans

if this come through the whole video game industry will eventually parish and hopefully this doesnt happen because it is stupid and like said above they do not ban religion movies or shows

I think he was talking with a sense of irony when he said "ban religion". People need to chill in this thread.

by Galduke - 2009-06-08 10:17
» Sadly realistic

Canada already encroaches on people's freedom of speech when hate (read; point of view) gets involved, maybe Germany will apply this to any aggressive speech like you said, Gun

by Galduke - 2009-06-08 10:27
» lol communism

Communism by itself either through revolutions, wars, or just existing has caused deaths equal to or greater than both world wars combined. Oh, and it's an atheist establishment.

by Galduke - 2009-06-08 10:43
» Pokemans is murder

Pokemon is actually a lot more fun when you think of it as a forced dog fighting type of game.

I always imagine a shaking, crying Chansey sobbing while struggling to aim a gun at the head of a bleeding and unconscious Meganium while I'm screaming "F#@KING DO IT! FINISH THE F%^*K OFF OR I'LL SCRAMBLE THAT EGG OF YOURS AND FORCE FORCE YOU TO EAT IT!!!"
