MotorStorm Arctic Edge - on platform power, icy physics, and new vehicles |
Ó
MotorStorm moves from the mountainous tropical paradise of Pacific Rift to the snowy cliffs of MotorStorm: Arctic Edge. PocketGamer sat down with Richard Ogden of BigBig Games and talked about the steps they took to bring a PS3 franchise to the PlayStation's less-powerful brothers - the PSP and PS2.
As far as development was concerned, Ogden said that they did try to keep the feel as intact as they could. Naturally, the power disparity between the platforms played a major factor.
"From the beginning of development, it's been our ambition to bring MotorStorm across to the PSP completely intact," he said. "We've had to compromise a little, but this is done under the bonnet and players shouldn't really perceive the difference."
For Arctic Edge, Ogden revealed that there will definitely slippery ice to drive on, but they've provided players a few ways around it, such as studded or spikey tires. "...you find that they actually have a lot of grip," he said. "So, these surfaces won't feel too different, at least for some of the vehicles."
It wouldn't be MotorStorm if you couldn't crash into the wall and get yourself screwed up bad. Luckily, they didn't forget to build on that. Plus we'll have two new vehicles to go and throw off a cliff - the Snowcat and Snow Machine.
"The Snow Machine is one of the lighter vehicles but has a track and skis instead of wheels. It'll be pretty effective on the snow. The Snow Cat is more a rival to the Big Rig and will perform well on any surface."
So far, Ogden can't talk about DLC nor give a more specific release date than the autumn release margin. But since 30 people have been working on this game for 15 months, that shouldn't be much of a problem.

I loved the first two and hope they pull of something just as fun with this one.
I just want to see some gameplay footage.
will it blend?
Will it blend into the ice? Sure. Fruit, dirt, or other things that aren't cold? No. Chocolate ice cream? no.
I always wondered what they were doing since Pursuit Force. Certainly not going on luxurious holidays, I was only able to trade in my copy for less than 15% the retail price, I think that says something about how popular the game is. That's also the first and last time I'm going to trade in a game, the amount of store credit you get for it is lousy. The timing also looks very lucky for Sony, being able to announce a major title along with all the others it has started to hype from early this year.
