I already have quite a backlog of RPGs to play on the PSP, and yet there's more coming. Last week, Nihon Falcom announced that new Ys games will be released soon, without revealing the platform(s) they'd be released on. Now, it's been confirmed.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, oh Ys (which is actually pronounced "ease")! Ys 7 and Ys I & II Chronicles will be released on the PSP within the year in Japan.

Chronicles is indeed a remake of the first two games - well, to be accurate, a re-release of the 2001 remake on PC. This comes out July. Meanwhile, Ys 7, an all-new installment in the franchise following Ys: The Ark of Napishtim, will be released in September.

Considering the massive following the cult franchise has, there's a big chance that these will eventually get a release in other regions as well.

I don't like RPG's but if it gets more people buying PSP's then keep them coming.

» Ark of Napishtim

I'm playing Ys: The Ark of Napishtim right now. It got bad reviews mostly due to the long load times and yes the load times are terrible if you play from UMD. If you make it an iso and use the MS speed boost in the most recent m33 firmware though, the load times are barely noticeable. In fact, it really is a great game if you play it this way.

» totally totally

totally agree with you. frak ign. frak gamespot. frak their review scores.

they're so pent up about technical difficulties (i.e. load times) that they totally use it against the entire game! i mean fine yeah, admitedly napishtim (and a couple other games) have horrendous load times. but the bad thing is that ign and gamespot give these games such low scores because of this one simple thing!

look at manakhemia. cmon! fine yeah bad load times. but to give this genius of a game a 2/10?!?! what the frak. just because of load times?!?!!???!

i know reviews take a lot of elements. gameplay. story. graphics. etc. but for load times to be the detriment of a game so much so that it gets a friccin 2/10?!?! they're too stuck up. they're too hung up about load times and technical details blahblahblah. that they forget what gaming is about! the GAME. take out the load times and if they review the game as if it didn't have abysmally sh*tty load times, they sure would have given it a higher score.

and believe me. i tried mana khemia both on umd and on memstick. the difference isn't all that bad. meaning umd-loading isn't all that long!!! it's almost just as fast as memstick loading!

frak you ign. whatever.

i never liked ign to begin with. but the mana khemia review was just the last straw.

» ... why didn't you just say '*****?'

Anyways, I was happy about this until I saw:

[I]Chronicles is indeed a remake of the first two games - well, to be accurate, a re-release of the 2001 remake on PC.\[I]

Well, I guess I'll stick with Ys Zeta 7.

» Good!

THIS is what I wanted from the DS edition. Ys Eternal is the definitive edition of the game, and a PSP port will definitely get a preorder from me.

The DS version was nice, but everything felt rather dull compared to the beautiful Ys Eternal. The music in Eternal was amazing, especially with the choice to use either the new recorded soundtrack or PC98 emulated output. Ys DS had very emotionless MIDI music, which sharply contrasts with the recorded music in the intro videos, which is still full of feeling. Graphically, I much prefer the sprites and tilesets rendered in 2D to them being plastered on extremely low-poly 3D environments. If they had allowed free camera, it might have worked a bit better, but it's just halfway between a faithful rerelease and a remake, not really succeeding at either. The games themselves are amazing, nonetheless, I just greatly prefer the Ys Eternal versions.
