Madden

The numbers for last month are finally in and it looks like we now know what happened in August! August is typically one of the slowest times of the year for the gaming industry. It's also one of the most predictable when it comes to the software charts for the United States. What do I mean by that? August, at least in the USA, is the month of Madden. Just look at the number it pulled off!
  1. PS2 Madden NFL 07 - 885,000
  2. 360 Madden NFL 07 - 477,000
  3. XBX Madden NFL 07 - 253,000
  4. PS2 Madden NFL 07: Hall of Fame Edition - 127,000
  5. 360 Madden NFL 07: Hall of Fame Edition - 92,000
  6. PSP Madden NFL 07 - 58,000
  7. GCN Madden NFL 07 - 50,000
  8. NDS Madden NFL 07 - 7,000
  9. GBA Madden NFL 07 - 3,000
Yep, around 1,952,000 copies of the game were sold in the USA alone. The last 50,000 of the 2 million figure reported earlier likely came from sales in Canada where Madden isn't as popular. As you can see, we Canadians aren't the only ones who don't have too much of a taste for Madden. Nintendo fans don't seem to particularly care for the series either. Oh well, let's move on to hardware.
  1. Nintendo DS - 278,000
  2. PlayStation 2 - 262,000
  3. Xbox 360 - 204,000
  4. Game Boy Advance - 156,000
  5. PlayStation Portable - 146,000
  6. GameCube - 41,000
  7. Xbox - 9,000
The Xbox is selling less and less every month now. Pretty soon, will it be gone completely? Is it only a matter of time before the same happens to the GameCube? Although people are still thinking the GCN might stand a chance of catching up to the Xbox. Who knows, maybe a couple of years down the road we'll hear an announcement saying that the GameCube did outsell the Xbox? By then we'll be well into the next generation so it won't matter much. PlayStation 2 is as strong as ever. Xbox 360 isn't doing as well as the Xbox had done by this point in time, but it's doing much better than the Xbox and GameCube had done in August 2002 (their first summer).

The Game Boy Advance is starting to pull out ahead of the PlayStation Portable again. So far this year, the GBA has outsold both the Nintendo DS and PSP. In the last couple of months though, the GBA has been losing a bit of steam. The PSP isn't doing too hot either but if Sony drops the price a little it might be back in the game. The DS is still going strong after the launch of the DS Lite in June. Don't expect it to go down until maybe next year. There's tons of releases, including new hardware colours, which should keep the numbers high.

Now, back to software. There were 24 titles that sold over 50,000 copies last month. Ten of them were on the PS2. Five were on the 360, four were on the DS, and two were on the XBX. The GCN, GBA, and PSP had one game a piece. And yes, the PSP and GCN 50k+ seller was just Madden. The Top 10 looked like this:
  1. PS2 Madden NFL 07 - 885,000
  2. 360 Madden NFL 07 - 477,000
  3. 360 Dead Rising - 337,000
  4. XBX Madden NFL 07 - 253,000
  5. PS2 FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus - 200,000
  6. NDS New Super Mario Bros. - 179,000
  7. PS2 NCAA Football 07 - 160,000
  8. PS2 Madden NFL 07: Hall of Fame Edition - 127,000
  9. PS2 Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories - 102,000
  10. 360 Madden NFL 07: Hall of Fame Edition - 92,000
Next month, summer officially ends! Goodbye summer drought, and hello fall bonanza! If you'd like past sales numbers to compare, click here.

Man the PS2 is still up and running. I'm still looking foward to Guitar Hero II, Okami, Socom, God of War II, and FF12. Man, if I don't get a PS3 at launch, the PS2 will still be able to keep me company.

The GBA hasn't had many stellar titles every since the DS launched, but then again, niether has the PSP. The GBA's last hurrah will be when FF5 and FF6 come out for it, after that I imagine a rapid downfall of sales for it. I'm really amazed to see the DS still on the top of the list.

There are a few things I want to say about this whole stats thing. To me, it makes no sense to compare all consoles together at least from different generations. I will try to justify this with which you may or may not agree. For one, Xbox 360 is more expensive than any other console as of the moment. PS2's price has dropped significantly and could be a huge factor for its continuous success. It was also out on the market since Oct 2000 (US) with it's 6th anniversay coming up. By this time, PS2 has earned a reputation of being a good console and many people know about it. Xbox 360 on the other hand is just not quite there yet. There are literally people who don't know that Xbox 360 even exists yet. You'll be surprised because unlike us, parents don't keep track of all gaming industry news. Last christmas when most of the holiday shopping was done, 360s were sold out and many just ignored the fact there is a next gen console on the market. Me for exmaple, I was 12 when PS2 came out. The first time I've heard about it was the end of September 2001. I had a PS1, but never bothered to go online and see if a new console was on the market. In my opinion it takes at least one year after the launch date to spread the word of a new console. This is gonna happen again with PS3 and the price might be another factor for people to reconsider their choice between a PS3 and 360. You think people will look at 1080p capability or HDMI, BluRay.... Face it, most people don't care and I don't know why fanboys keep arguing as to who will win the war. (its not liek parents go on this site to read what we post) Maybe fanboys care but not the majority. (going way of topic) They'll just look at the pricey tag and decide right on the spot with no research/background information whatsoever. (guess which console they'll most likely buy?) There was a statistics done, don't remember where, but it said that casual gamers make up most of the gaming market which are primarily adults and not hardcore games who like me sit here and type comments like this. And just because PS2 is doing better right now, has no direct relationship to how well PS3 will do especially with all the delays and who knows what else. But remember my words: There is no perfect console. Launch PS3s will break just like 360s, there could be more or less due to the complexity of the hardware (8 SPEs *7 active SRY* could be a problem. If developers had a problem with dead rising running on 3 cores, what will it be like with 7 O:) Anyways nuff said. Rofl such an abrupt ending. Oh well.

I thought they would be back to below the PSP like it was before the DS lite came along. Didn't all those dummys who had to buy their handheld again from nintendo already do so in June and July?

I expect September month numbers to be

PlayStation 2 - 290,000 //anticipation for FF12!

Nintendo DS - 202,000

Xbox 360 - 201,000

PlayStation Portable - 160,000 //might drop if PSP price drop announced for xmas.

Game Boy Advance - 150,000

The reason they are better than psp is because good games and gameplay. Sony is good at homebrew and some good games and too many musics and movies that are useless.
