Monster Hunter Portable 2nd reigns supreme during first half of 2007

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd - Image 1It is already given that Japan is Nintendo-land especially these days with Wii and DS dominating sales charts. PlayStation Portable fans, however, might be interested to know that the top-selling video game for the first half of 2007 comes from their platform, namely Monster Hunter Portable 2nd.

After showing love for the said title, Japanese gamers revert back to Wii Sports as it landed on the number two spot. Keep in mind that unlike in other markets, Wii Sports is not bundled with the Wii console in Japan.

Then comes Pokemon Diamond and Pearl on third place. Western-hit Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas landed on the 17th spot. For purposes of being fair and accurate, take note that PlayStation 3 titles Dynasty Warriors: Gundam and Virtua Fighter 5 appeared on the 29th and number 96th place respectively.

Furthermore, no Xbox 360 title made it to the top 100 during the first half of this year.

On a related matter, the top publisher in Japan during the said period is still Nintendo followed by Capcom. Nintendo had 32 games in the top 100 while Capcom had 6. While Namco Bandai had 15 and Sega had 10, Capcom remained on the second spot because of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd.

» Rubbish

Monster Hunter games are typically long and boring. I do not look forward to this rubbish.

I like these games, but they are only fun if you have other people to play them with actually.

It isnt very fun to kill some bigass dinosaur by yourself, its more fun if you work together with a handful of people to trap and then kill it together.

Alas, I am still buying this game.

» "long and boring"

Please explain how spending 98% of your time playing this game, fighting monsters that are vastly larger and nominally faster then you boring (Oh thats right, because if a game doesn't have a story where you press the X button repeadively to get through is rated as exciting compared to non-stop action)? And how has length ever been a bad feature in any game?

» 78

Lets see.. Maybe it is the repetativeness of it all that is boring ?

If a game has a strong solid storyline, then you are compelled by the storyline to fight your way through hordes of monsters. Just to see the storyline progress.

But if a game is all about killing monsters, then is might get boring for some people after a while.

» Yo b*tch

@Skeptic

If you dont like the game than leave.

MONSTER HUNTER ROXXX!!!

I have played the game like 1,2 year and it is still NOT BORING!

Its like Resident Evil and GTA.

You can play the game verrrrrrrry long and it is also fun to play with your friends, you heared that MultiPlay!

» All required monsters slain...

I LOVE Monster Hunter Freedom. Probably my favorite PSP game ever. I play it more than anything else and have put more hours into it than even RPGs like Final Fantasy X (120+) and Star Ocean: Till the end of time (140+).

Like the person above said, it is SO much more fun to play with friends. I meet up with my buds each week and play guild quests. Currently at over 205 hours of gameplay and counting. Hunter Rank 5, baby!

People who say it is boring are either people who haven't played it, or people who can't even kill a Kut Ku. Go play your Grand Theft Awful: Vice Sh**ty Stories and leave the hunting to the men.

by GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-07-06 14:56
» I happen to think...

that Monster Hunter Freedom is by far the best game ever made on any console, ever...so it is in no way boring or repetitive. You can put hundreds of hours into this game and still not beat all of the missions...and you can change/improve your strategy as you progress through the game to make things more interesting. The people who don't like this game are the ones who just suck at games...its as simple as that....thats why they need to go back to playing Pokemon where they can just hit the attack button all game..

by Rathalos Coopersmith III - 2007-07-06 16:41
» I also love Monster Hunter too....VERY MUCH.

This game has single handedly been in gamefaqs top 3 usually in the # ONE place for well over a year now.

There is a reason for this.

And, if SONY was smart, they would have their R&D look into this as a 'cue' as to how to go about creating their yet to be released, 'Killer App'. Say what you will about the game, but in Japan this game was the number one reason for many, many psp sales upon it's release. And, I wont even get into how many (800k+) Pre-sales the sequel had before it's release!

I personally love the game because there is NOTHING that can compete nor compare to the sheer depth and scope of this game series. Offering at the very least 50+ hours of gameplay and at the most 700+ hrs of gameplay. And, that's just SINGLE PLAYER. No other game on ANY handheld has achieved this kind of replayability. Hell, very few consoles offer that type of value.

Yes. Monster Hunter has a learning curve.

But, the reward for mastering this curve, is owning in your posession one of the best games created for ANY videogame system.

» Lmao

"Lets see.. Maybe it is the repetativeness of it all that is boring ?" Final Fantasy + Pressing Attack, using Ice on Fire monster, using Heal or a potion when your low on HP, perhaps pressing a button to use a special trigger command on a certain event, and so forth. Kingdom Hearts? It's pretty much the same thing except now your smashing the attack button. "But you do the same thing in monster hunter!" WRONG. Anyone who has played the game past their first monster hunt has realized in order to heal, you need to find atleast 2-4 seconds somewhere during your fight to heal. Monster hits you on the first second, you can't heal. Strategy. Dodging a tail whip and rolling to the side, immediately following up with a swipe acrossed the Wyverns nose? Or pressing Attack and targetting Bahamuts tail? Hmmn...Yeah, strategy right? People say it's, "strategy" but after beating 1-10 (Playing 3 on the DS) theres no strategy at all pretty much. Monster Hunter? No fight is ever the same. Even if you get the best gear and still learn every move and try to memorize everything of one monster, it can still hand your ass to you on a silver platter. It's about as, "repetative" as a racing game. Your going around the same track, but your never always doing it the exact same way.

Your argument fails. It's repeadative to those who are simply horrible at it, and didn't do anything past the, "Gathering Raw Meat" quest. OMFG I R PRESSING TEH CIRCLE TO HIT MONSTER AND PRESSING CIRCLE TO CARVE IT UP! I R USING TEH SAME BUTTON!

by Namaru - 2007-07-06 20:11
» Best game ever.

Now if they would realize these are the games that are succeeding! Now why haven't they tried putting the first Phantasy Star Online on the PSP? Offline mode when your away, online mode for when your within Wi-Fi distance, doesn't suck up 30 minutes+ straight like monster hunter = teh win.

Why are we all being so defensive all of a sudden ?

But its quite obvious that you people dont get the point i was trying to make. You only focus on the battle portion of the games.

"In FF you only hit Attack"

"In KH you smash the attack button"

"In monsterhunter you have to use strategy"

Dont you see that you are just proving the point that I tried to make ? MonsterHunter is all about fighting monsters. Well, ok, that can be fun and all.

But for some people that might not cut it. In the games you mentioned, FF and KH, there is a story surrounding the battles you fight. And this story pushes people forward to fight these battles. Those games aren't about the battles you fight, but the story in the game that makes you fight those battles.

Well, I'm sorry that i disturbed your ideal little world by saying that some people might not like your 'all-time favorite game'. Have fun and slay monster after monster with no direct purpose whatsoever.

» ..

I want this game, but I hoped it would include infrastructure mode. None of my mates with PSPs play MH, so online is my only way to fully enjoy it.

I want a MH game for the PS3 in a form of a MMORPG, but staying true to its monster hunting roots. There should hunting parties (like clans), who can fight each other or together to defeat monsters, go on quests, trade, and many more. It should be a huge world with many towns/villages and locations where players from all around the world can meet up. That would be the ultimate MH experience.

by Dodo - 2007-07-07 20:54
» Eh

Being outsold by a cheaper toy doesn't mean it's the better console. Wii is selling more simply because more people can afford it. I wouldn't give anyone a PS3 as a gift, because I would have it for myself. A Wii is only good enough for kids and casuals who know nothing about hardcore gaming and feel content to play same old f*cking Mario and some stupid gimicky sport games they can't play in real life.

by TheMetroid - 2007-07-08 04:19
» You're right

Mario does Suck, thats why I play Metroid 24/7. But in my opinion I havn't really seen any good games for PS3 yet either so, go figure. I guess we will all have to wait til after this E3 to see whats in store for us all.
