The Shinjuku Yosobashi Camera branch - Image 1

Over at the Land of the Rising Sun, Capcom's latest PSP title comes into the scene with an encouraging amount of fanfare from the eager Japanese audience. On its release day, many of the stores which participated in the simultaneous release of the game were practically mobbed as people lined up to get copies of the game.

Over at Shinjuku, the main branch of the popular retailer Yodobashi Camera opened its doors for business that day around 10 a.m., only to find more than 140 people gathered in front of the store, and each one waiting for his turn to either purchase a copy of Monster Hunter Portable 2, or get one of those bundles which include the new Champagne Gold PSP. Some fans have even reportedly lined up as early as 5:30 a.m. just to make the purchase.

Meanwhile, the Akiba branch of Yodobashi Camera also opened to a similar sight, as more than 70 people gathered for the game's release. Some have even lined up as early as 6 a.m. Because of this branch's proximity to the local train station, though, security guards had to manage the line as the crowd was starting to obstruct the way for people who needed to catch their train. The store is also reported to have prepared 110 units of the Champagne Gold PSP bundles, but at all these were almost sold out, a mere 40 minutes after they started selling them. On top of the game itself though, others have also immediately started purchasing copies of the MoHan Rookie's Guide and accessory sets, while some headed for the in-store PlayStation Spot to immediately download additional quests.

However, Shinjuku's Bic Camera takes the cake with a whopping 200 people who turned up for the release of MoHan (as Monster Hunter is commonly referred to). To prepare for the rush and to keep the crowd from obstructing the sidewalk in front of the store, Bic's had to install a special sales counter and register on the third floor, while the queue wound its way within the premises.

With such a successful Day 1, could it only be a matter of time before Capcom is convinced enough to bring MoHan to the West?

We always knew MHF would absolutely smash it in Japan. They're mad for it! I guess we were lucky that Capcom decided to release the original to the West. However, I'm not sure how well it went down here. It seems much more cult in the West, rather than a huge mainstream phenomenon (like the GTA series).

Ultimately, I don't think it matters how well it does in Japan, 'cos Capcom are already well aware of the huge fan-base; another 'MoHan' game is an almost guaranteed success! However, for us Westerners, I think all we can do is sit and hope, perhaps send and email or 2 to Capcom just to tell them that MHF is very well liked and a sequel would do well out here (albeit without the mental queing and furore of the Japanese release).

It's not just the Japanese that enjoy taking a 'los or two down...

» damn right !

MHF was a blast ! I was really annoyed that it got such poor reviews when it was released . though i have to admit that it would have been insane with online play. person to person is good but online would have been great .
