MGM reveals with God of War movie director - Image 1It appears we've run into more details for the upcoming God of War movie under Universal Studios. The rather unlikely source of this info is a recent MGM press wire announcing the studio's plans to release a new RoboCop movie this 2010, to be written by David Self.

While that's already pretty big news in itself (though not gaming-related), here was the segment of MGM's PR that caught our attention:

David Self's credits include 13 Days and Road To Perdition. He wrote God of War for Universal, to which Brett Ratner is attached to direct, and was a writer on Universal's Wolfman currently in production. He is represented by UTA and attorney Karl Austen.

Well, it looks like we now know which "huge-name director" Jaffe had in mind for Kratos' debut on the silver screen. To his credit, Bretner is best know for directing films like Red Dragon, Rush Hour 2 and 3, and X-Man: The Last Stand. That's all the details we have for the moment, though we'll get back to you if we run into any related updates.

"though not gaming-related"

Why not gaming related? I'm pretty sure that EA or another company will sell thousands of crappy movie-based games on all consoles.

» We're supposed to be excited?

Bretner is best know for directing films like Red Dragon, Rush Hour 2 and 3, and X-Man: The Last Stand.

I'm already let down!

by Tim Y. - 2008-07-25 02:35
» Not really

I just added that to give the newer readers a better grasp of Bretner's past film experience.

Being a Jackie Chan fan myself, the Rush Hour films as a whole were a disappointment.

by girandhistacos - 2008-07-25 02:40
» So Disappointing...

The guy has quite a few movies under his belt, and they're all terrible.

I don't think he's going to redeem himself with this one, he's going to screw it up and put some stupid martial arts in it.

The characters are going to look terrible and the scenery is going to be garbage.

What a let down.

by Mad-elph - 2008-07-25 03:03
» .yeah

They meant the RoboCop reference which given that it is still in production and no games have been announced is for the moment not game related.

by Mad-elph - 2008-07-25 03:07
» would you have preferred

Peter Jackson, or Guillermo del Toro?

X-men the last stand was actually pretty good given that the character were already made and he couldn't change much. But they ended the story and he envisioned that huge fight at the end, which can be taken as a point of solace in that GOW will be filled with epic fights.

by Tim Y. - 2008-07-25 03:15
» Christopher Nolan please

I'd love to see how he'll draw out Kratos' dark, brooding personality for GoW.

by girandhistacos - 2008-07-25 03:59
» What?

Okay, first of all, the X-Men movies were all horrid.

Second of all, I'd like to have seen someone like Tim Burton take a crack at this.

Yes he'd make it dark, but it would also be entertaining (provided he didn't cast Depp as Kratos.)

by bugga12 - 2008-07-25 06:05
» girandhistacos...

Yeah, uh... No matter how much I admire Tim Burton and his work... I don't see a singing Kratos on screen anytime soon... Seriously, that would be EXTREMELY awkward, not to mention bizarre.

by girandhistacos - 2008-07-25 07:09
» Well...

Although a singing Kratos would be hilarious, I agree with you that that wouldn't work.

However, if he was to do it without making it a musical, I think it would rather exciting.

Maybe they should get Kevin Smith to do it. He'd have Kratos calling the Sirens 'c0ck-mongering snowballing *****es'... or something like that.

» ZACK SNYDER

christopher nolan and guillmero del toro would be sweet but nothing would compare to ZACK SNYDER baby woohoo!.. now HE would be the best for the fact he's young and will NOT go against the story and change it up and make it poop (he said that in an interview about the movies he directs)... ZACK SNYDER is the most accurate director IMO in the movie industrie so far.... the titles he has under his belt are: 300-DAWN OF THE DEAD-and the upcoming film WATCHMEN.

thats why he would be PERFECT for the job.

bret ratner can suck it.X-men the last stand bombed badly... allthough i admit im a HUGE fan of chakie chan and HUGE fan of rush hour so i loved the rush hour trilogy (3rd one was good but not the greatest).. and red dragon put him up on the polls as a great director.. BUT NO! please dont direct GoW.

ZACK FTW. :):):)

» Why?

Why does this keep happening to me?

by Apeaggedon - 2008-07-25 08:19
» lol omfg

ur right dude,im sooooo fI_Ickin glad its not uwe boll... holllyyy ***** .

if they seriously picked this f@g,the second fans hear about it,its a gunna be a race to assassinate him before he starts.

i for one would be in that race to kill him, since he's killed all the movies he's ever made.. its just a token of PAYBACK biatch!

by Silver-Tiger - 2008-07-25 08:23
» ....

got that a few times, too.

Anyway, anybody got an idea who will be Kratos?

by Gino D. - 2008-07-25 08:40
» Yeap. Blown-up thumbs.

I get that too. From what I can observe, that only happens to images that have long mouse-hover image descriptions. What browser you using? This started happening to me sometime after I upgraded to Firefox 3... It may be a browser compatibility issue, but I can't say for sure.

Sometimes, though, when you reload a page, the images will go back to their supposed-to-be thumb sizes, and not blown up like that. Weeeeird.

Thanks for pointing this out JaXeRiR. Don't worry. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again.

» Kratos...

Let Kratos, be Kratos! Itself!

by frazRETRO - 2008-07-25 10:30
» Kratos...

Hmm..

Vin Diesel? He may make a good Kratos.

Who else?

by bugga12 - 2008-07-25 11:19
» Hmmm...

How about that ... famous wrestler, Batista or something..? Haha That'd make a nice Kratos. (Yeah right.)

by Mabie A. - 2008-07-25 12:01
» the rock

dwayne johnson? i think he could fit the bill. he certainly looked the part for the scorpion king? yes?

by andre_euro - 2008-07-25 15:00
» oh

so he was da one that murdered x men??, the third movie, i rated as one of my all time worst movies... was thinking who ever made dis, is a complete fool... so he made rush 2 and 3 also ehh... didnt like them...havent seen red dragon though... hope he doesnt ruin this( dont liek god of war the game myself, but story seemed quite gud(didnt like the gameplay))

by EricDraven - 2008-07-25 15:47
» wasn't it already mentioned...

by EricDraven - 2008-07-25 15:49
» sorry, forgot the link...

by dazmo - 2008-07-25 19:45
» heh`

someone shoulda let me direct it.

i wud cast myself and everyone/thing else would be muppets. ..

even the humongous gods, humongous muppets the size of skyscrapers filled with muppeteers. . .

then id light them of fire !

YES!

by Apeaggedon - 2008-07-25 20:57
» THE PERFECT KRATOS!

OMFG the most perfect guy for the job would have to be the dude from "the protector"-"troy" and "fearless"... he's the only biggest buff white bald dude in all tho's movies lol. i cant believe i 4got his name... if you know wut im talking about then you'l agree he's perfect in EVERY way possible (especially movement and facial expressions)-bieng huge and tall makes it a little harder to move according to kratos's speed in the game's. thats why that dude is perfect.

by gnizzlespot - 2008-07-25 22:14
» djimon hounsou

djimon hounsou did a flawless job in blood diamond, and theres no doubt hed be a good kratos, but his accent is too strong and imo hes not big enough. but hes still a great actor.

by JaXeRiR - 2008-07-26 01:15
» Yep.

IIRC this didn't happen to me with older Firefox versions.

by 3vi1 - 2008-07-26 04:07
» Singing Kratos?

Why do you think Tim Burton would make a "Singing Kratos"? Have you forgotten his 1989 Batman?

by cjmabry25 - 2008-07-26 19:12
» X-men?

LOL @ X-Man

by cjmabry25 - 2008-07-26 19:14
» Nathan Jones?

I think the guy your talking about ( Apeaggedon) is Nathan Jones.
