Well, time once again for a look at how the hardware and software sales went down in Japan. You know who's back on top? Here's a hint: it prints pieces of paper that serve as mediums of exchange and generally accepted as forms of payment for goods and services. Or you could just read the title again.

Nintendo's handheld consoles bounced back in Japan for the week of March 16 to March 22, eclipsing the Sony PSP thanks largely to a 158% increase in the number of DSi units sold. Them Japanese folks just really love their DSis, don't they? Must have been because of the DS-exclusive Super Robot Taisen K, which also went straight to the top spot in the software charts.

The DS Lite's lagging at 8,948 units sold, but that still wasn't enough to get it the last spot. That belongs to the PS2, but if we just stick to the newer consoles, then the Xbox 360 takes that place. It looks like the mad rush generated by Resident Evil 5 is wearing down, as the Microsoft console has been showing a decline in sales, dropping to only 5,441 units sold.

Speaking of decline, the PS3 is also suffering a slump, selling a total of 25,435 units. That's a drop of just over 9%. The PSP's still going strong, though, what with a 51% increase in sales leading to a total of 65,765 units sold. Thats 14,416 units behind the combined numbers of the DSi and DS Lite and 5,468 units behind the DSi.

All of these drops and rises didn't seem to affect the Wii too much. The console did get a bit of an increase (almost 1%), but it pretty much stayed where it was, selling a total of 18,095 units.

Oh, and Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G? It's still in the top ten. In fact, it even went up a slot compared to the last time I wrote about the Media Create charts. Wow. Imagine that. Anyway, here are the numbers for both the hardware and software sales in Japan for the week of March 16 to March 22, 2009:

Hardware:
  • DSi: 71,233
  • PSP: 65,765
  • PS3: 25,435
  • Wii: 18,095
  • DS Lite: 8,948
  • Xbox 360: 5,441
  • PS2: 5,067
Software:

  • [PS2] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2009 (Konami) - 50,324
  • [PS2] Amagami (Enterbrain) - 42,490
  • [NDS] Mario & Luigi RPG 3 (Nintendo) - 39,183
  • [PS3] Musou Orochi Z (KOEI) - 35,545

Maybe if you stuck a crappy 1.3 megapixel on a PSP it would sell more. And before I get the, "Oh Em Gee U Fan Boi," don't even try, I owned a DS, (Then sold it because--wow, just no.) and I know the 2 peices of hardware are different now, but so much of this new stuff on DSi, either..

A) Looks gimmicky

B) PSP had since launch.

All in all, yawn.

To be fair, a great deal of why I like my PSP is the homebrew, I'm sure that counts for something on why I think the DS is just not for me.

» Nice to see.

PS2 games still selling great as usual :D! And gratz to DSi. Xbox is epic failing X_x...

» MS fails.

Until 360 outsells PS3 in Japan, MS can't say much. Almost out sold by PS2? That's pretty sad.

You know you'd think everyone in Japan would own Monster Hunter 2nd G already.

I really want Robot Taisen to be released outside of Japan for both the PSP and the DS. I really enjoyed the GBA ones.

Too bad for Japan they don't get to try Dead Space and are instead stuck with RE5 which isn't scary at all.

I guess the RPG games that that 360 has isn't enough to convince the Japanese consumers to buy the 360. Seriously, PS2 is right there with the 360.

I want me some Super Robot Tasien too! I'd even settle for some new entries in the OG saga, as long as they get localized.

» should i?

lol i doubt anyone is not amazed by how long Monster Hunter is staying on the charts.

is it really that good? seeing it week by week on the charts make me wanna try it out. but the reviews i've read is just meh, nothing groundbreaking about it +/ and i'm not good at going online to play multiplayer..

» @Senaiboy

Monster Hunter is great because for a hand held game it has a lot of items and customization. It's an MMO that requires knowing the enemies movements or else you're dead. The rating is meh because it has absolutely no storyline and is mission based. I guess you can say it really depends on the type of gamer you are and you're preference.

Also about Monster Hunter, I couldn't be the only one with this problem, but when I first started playing I was constantly asking myself, "What the Hell am I supposed to be doing? Looking for eggs? Fighting these monsters? Do I have to carry eggs all the way back home??" And the camera was pissing me off too. But, once you get a feel for it, like Papajag said, it's a great handheld game. You won't care about the no story when you're fighting a dragon with a group of people 40 times your size with weapons bigger then you and armor that weighs 20 ton.

Speaking of bad camera, I tried playing Portable Ops again (to give it another chance) recently, and holy crap, I don't know how people get adjusted to the camera in that game. I'm glad everyone else enjoys it, but no dice from me if the game has crappy camera issues.

although i've stopped playing monster hunter 8 months ago i cant stop picking my psp with my left hand looking claw-like... btw any mecha game is a good a game... (ok, maybe not so, but still... lots of gundam franchise never gets releases outside japan)

» Umm

I enjoy my DSLite... mainly because it's hacked but agree that the DSi is a complete coat of junk. The "upgrades" are useless crap.

Nice to see the PS3 and PSP take top spots after that!

» Monster Hunter anyone?

MH is probably the best game for the PSP, next to it Crisis Core and Dissidia. It takes some time to get used to moving the camera angles constantly, but once you get the hang of it it is amazing. I can't wait for the next game to come out in the US. Btw does anyone play using adhoc party for the ps3? It'd be great if I could play with people other than my friends.

» heh

"Seriously, PS2 is right there with the 360."

honestly, are you surprised? the ps2 is freaking awesome, i'd easily bet if ps3's still had ps2 b/c in production it would be at the top of that chart hands down

*hugs his 60gb ps3* i love it lawl

by ptspyder - 2009-03-30 09:27
» Sorry azn

MH is much better then both Crisis Core and Dissidia. I still dont get the point of Dissidia other then MASSIVE fan service, and Crisis Core sucked because of the battle/reel system.

by senaiboy - 2009-03-31 02:54
» thanks

cool, thanks for the replies. guess i'll get the new MH when it comes out then (:

» Nintendo wants you to convert to the DSi

The crappy new features of the DSi just further establish the DS as a kid's toy. No adult or teen is going to care about taking crappy low res photos and putting cat ears on them and trading them with friends over Wifi.

The DSi is such an overrated piece of crap, I just don't see how anybody can see this as an upgrade.

1. Thinner (2.6mm), but wider and longer than DS lite.

2. LESS battery life, 9-14 hours rather than the 15-19 the DS lite had; different charger plug (how nice)

3. 2 low resolution VGA (that's 0.3MP) cameras rather than a decent ONE.

4. A new operating system after the DS is 4+ years old, but just focused on things the DS should have had since the DS lite.

5. The introduction of DSi enhanced and DSi exclusive game formats. That's right, Nintendo wants you to upgrade soon. Get ready to pay the $169 price of admission ($40 more than the DS lite) to play the latest games next year.

6. No more GBA games or accessories that use the slot (like the rumble pack or guitar hero.)

How many DS owners have bought every DS model since release because Nintendo can't design it right the first time?

» dude..

Microsoft is never going to outsell current Sony or Nintendo system competition in Japan, that's Nintendo and Sony Territory, like the U.S. is *supposedly* X360 territory even though Nintendo is raping them and Sony, its main competition which it had a head start it on is selling more units per year and catching up quickly, guess most u.s. kids find a product with the biggest failure rate of all time to be acceptable..unlike Japanese kids, they know better..what good is a big game library if your system is dead?
