Map software for PSP released in Japan

Rumors have been going around stating that a new PSP firmware would be released today featuring GPS support for the PSP, but as you can see no new firmware has been released. Instead, a program called Minna no Chizu (Everyone's Map) has been released for the price of 3,990 Yen, roughly $34 USD, as was speculated earlier. Although there's still no GPS support, this program requiring the 2.60 firmware features maps of all of Japan. Major metropolitan areas can reach a zoom level of 0 (1 cm on screen equals 25 m), while some of the less populated areas can only zoom into 1 cm per 100 m, which still isn't that bad. In the future, add-on packages will be released to include points of interests like restaurants, but for now you can still view all of the names of streets. Although the GPS we've all desired still isn't here, this is definitely a step in the right direction.

What has flash player got to do with a map program?

I'm looking forward to a GPS add on for the psp , just hope that it isnt super expensive like most gps devises. Thing is, with the PSP you've already got the main proccessing unit (wich to my knowledge is the expensive part of the gps systems) so i could see the gps receaver being relatively cheap. £100 max (including software n receaver).

Though i doubt that they will release it in the UK till next year knowing sony, even if it gets released novemberish time elsewhere.

Can't sony get anything right?...

...mmm let me think!! Wasn't sony the ones who made the PSP in the first place? Or was is from Mars?

Everyone is looking for new things for the PSP, chirst I'm still waiting on a 2.60 downgrader.. but as we all know this isn't going to happen soon!

GPS in on the way for September 2006, and will be an add-on which sits on top of the PSP, ever wondered what the holes are beside the Mini-USB connector? Well yer thats right, its to screw on the GPS or the Cam.

Oh and just for notice the 2 metal fixtures are power connectors.

The PSP is a wonderful piece of equipment, and yer it could do a lot more than sony are letting on, but hey if you where a large company, won't you wait until sales are bad before bring out an add-on?? Finacally sony are playing the waiting game, maybe if we all stopped buying PSP's and games then we might see an increase in Firmware updates, Add-ons, and more besides.

Just give it time, and until this, go out and buy a GPS if you want one now (ebay is a good place to look), I'm sure your get it a lot cheaper than from sony.

PS1 emulator, now thats another story, and I'm sure it would be an advantage to sony if they released this now before someone comes up with a cracked way of doing this.

I know for a fact I would play PS1 games on the PSP, if and how I did it, I wouldn't give a S**T as long as it was possible then that's all I would care about.

I think instead of asking on forums we should put a pertition site up and then jump across sign it and then email the link to sony for them all to see, how P**Sed of with them we are for not getting this out before a MAP.

Regards,

Mat

"Could someone please tell me if you can browse Google Maps with the PSP Browser."

Nah google maps doesnt work yet on PSP Browser 2.6 as it uses Flash, but Multimap.com does as it uses Javascript.

@#12

"Oh and just for notice the 2 metal fixtures are power connectors."

No they are not. Check PS2Dev forums hardware section for information about how PSP USB devices draw their power. If I remember correctly it uses the 5th pin (usually reserved I believe) and the shielding of the connector to draw around 1 volt. This was revealed by testing the connections of the Talkman peripheral microphone.

I wonder if theres anything on this UMD that will allow for GPS functionality at a later date, activated when you plug in the GPS peripheral for example. I think its probably too soon though as the GPS libraries are either not released yet to the developers or only just released(?).

Thanks #16!

Thanks for the multimap link too. I didn't even know the PSP browser supported Java. I still have 1.5 fw and I really haven't looked into the online capabilities at all yet.

What I really want is aerial photos combined with maps, basically Google Maps, for when I'm out (motor)biking.

Oh well, guess I'll just continue to save dozens of screen shots for now.

^---Lmao, "pure comedy"

» Not ideal but a compromise for now

@#18

It supports (some) Javscript but not Java.

Multimap does do aerial photos and also overlays a small portion of the map where you mouse cursor is pointing but this unfortunately doesn't work on the PSP, I guess it handles the cursor quite differently to your desktop browser.

So whilst not ideal its still quite handy to be able to save maps as images directly on your PSP, i.e save the map as an image in PSP Web Browser and then view it in PSP Photo Viewer.

Just to stay on topic, Minna no Chizu (Everyone's Map) and GPS units don't have aerial photos, so I guess you really are gonna have to wait for flash support and Google Maps. But even then how is that going to do what you want as you can't save the maps/photos/hybrids? Or do you have wifi access coverage everywhere where you live/ride? lol I doubt it.
