Manhunt 2 rating reversal protested by CCFC

CCFC logo - Image 1Manhunt 2 (for the Wii and PSP) may have been granted an M rating by the ESRB, but there's not much reason to relax and celebrate because the people from Campaign For a Commercial-Free Childhood (CFCC) is hot on the heels of the game's rating reversal, despite the explanation that Manhunt 2's level of violence had been watered down to deserve the M rating.

Still holding on to their opinion of M-rated games being marketed to children, the CFCC is expressing their concern that those under 18 years of age will now be able to get hold of Manhunt 2 and possibly have their minds warped into senseless violence. It should be noted at this point that the CCFC are also partially responsible for Manhunt 2 getting an Adults Only rating, so there's no telling what may happen at this point. This is what the CFCC has to say about the issue:

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood is extremely concerned that the ESRB has downgraded its rating for Manhunt 2 from Adults Only (AO) to Mature (M). Despite industry claims to the contrary, M-rated games continue to be marketed and sold to children under seventeen. The ESRB’s reversal of its earlier decision dramatically increases the likelihood that Manhunt 2 – the most violent game to date produced for the interactive Nintendo Wii platform – will be marketed and sold to children.

Since Rockstar Games is mum about the alterations made in the game, the children's rights watchdog group demanded the gaming publisher to divulge what had been changed in the game that enabled it to escape the clutches of the AO rating.

The Manhunt 2 issue sure doesn't die down. Will Rockstar be able to stand up against this new development? Check this space for more updates.

Oh Come on you morons! If you spent a little more time watching what your kids are doing you wouldn't have to put up a fight on what games are coming out. Come on I have to deal with a V chip inside everything now! Grow up and start watching your own kids instead of everyone else's and if you can do that. PLEASE! PLEASE! Don't have any more kids and take yourself out of the Gene Pool! We don't need any more Dee Dee Dee's (Carlos Mancia) out there!

it's an effin game made for effin adults!! If I wanna choke someone in the game with his intestines, then I should be allowed to, I'm 24 for christ-sake! I still get carded, even though I have a full beard. There's only one way a child is getting games like this and it's his/her stupid parents that don't wanna listen to him/her whine that Bobby or Jill got the game why can't they get it too?!? Doesn't matter much anyway, I'm moving to Japan, I only have to worry about porn getting censored. ^_^

I freaking hate these ppl. They are freaking out over a game...come on now if a parent is willing to protest like this and start a group like this then should be able to search their child room for these games and use parental control on their consoles

I know how hard it must be to waste 15 mins of your time to do something for your children that you care so much for but you rather mess with these companies that have children of their own over something that is your responsibility?

That idiotic and crazy go worry about real politics like the war in Iraq and the upcoming election for president rather than screw around with video games issues...Sheesh I bet the ppl apart of this group are the majority that voted for Bush

Can anyone see the irony here. Commercial free childhood in the US, I dont think so. Do they not know that one of the biggest marketing sectors is for kids, and is worth billions.

They're just clutching at straws here. Jumping on the anti-videogame band wagon is not big or clever.

# Another system that doesn't work...HYde 2007-08-26 06:37
I agree with some of the points old and Chris said... except for the political stabs, no need for that.

When a game comes out I feel it should be up to the store to make sure that the person is of age to buy it. A five year old doesn't go in and buy a forty of Old E Malt Liquor... hopefully not!

(Chris I feel you, I still get carded also, but don't mind at all) Also the parents that are concerned about what there child is playing, needs to take the time to setup the parental locks up. I don't have kids but I do go down to my sisters and bring some of my games. My brother in law loves Halo1-2, the Ghost Recon's, basically anything that you can kill with a gun "First Person Shooters" but I know also that his son may play when were not looking, so I went ahead and setup there parental locks I respect my sister's decision. I'm sure there are ways around it, so the only thing to do then is be a parent and care. Check in on 'em to see what there doing every now and then.

wtf how is an M game marketed to children? you need to be 17 to buy an M game. I think a 17 year old is mature enough to play a violent game. this ccfc organization is full of a bunch of hippie douches and redneck mothers with like 20 kids.

First Jackass Thompson and now the CCFC.

I believe that we all have the right to play what

ever games we want to regardless of ratings.

Now I understand making games for kids and I

also understand making games for adults.

Whats going on here is that adult games will

always be attacked by the self righteous that

believe there should be no such thing as adult

games and that all games should be rated for

four year olds.

This is a huge mistake that these self righteous

ass holes can't seem to figure out for them

selves. If you don't want your children playing

such games, be a good parent and monitor

what it is your children are playing and not

to make all the other gamers of the world

suffer because your to lazy to be a parent.

They expect all gamers to suffer due to the

fact they don't want mature games released

because their precious little back births could

get a hold of it.

That makes as much sense as banning pencils

from school because they're affrayed their

little $H!Ts might get lead poisoning.

We have the right to play AO/M games if we

chose to and if you don't want your children

playing such titles be a good parent and

don't buy it for them and monitor what they

are playing, NOT ban all games that threaten

your little insignificant world.

CCFC needs to STFU!

More than just kids play these game sys. and the

last thing we need it some activist organization

taking our rights away from us all because

children exist.

It's called "be a good parent" and don't let them

get their little grubby hand on it. Not make

everybody else suffer because your over

protective or under protective.

# So despite everything both Rockstar, Take-Two AND the ESRB have said....Guest 2007-08-26 08:11
Rockstar and Take-Two have clearly said this game is NOT marketed towards children, and it is also illegal in the USA to sell a M-rated game to children.

The ERSB have recognised these claims by giving Manhunt 2 an M rating, therefore restricting the sales of Manhunt 2 to those of 17+, the target audience of Manhunt 2.

Therefore, both the ESRB, Rockstar Games and Take Two Entertainment are against you.

The only ally you have, is Jack Thompson :)

i already have to show id to buy GTA or any M game at best buy, which is reasonable. this system already works, this isnt about children, its about censorship, and avoiding having serious talks with your children about violence and the media. furthering the stereotype that every child in america is either a mistake or a lonely housewives pet.

# The real problem here...Guest 2007-08-26 12:46
...is that these political action committees don't want to look at the real issue behind how the kids get the games; bad parents. I've been on the retail side of it, and I can say with certainty that the sheer volume of parents who nonchalantly buy GTA, Manhunt, and the like for their kids 12 and YOUNGER is jaw-droppingly high. They don't care what's in the game and wave you away as you inform them (as legally necessary by retailers who sell M rated games). Hell, even at WAL MART, the land of nobody cares, the employees still tell the parents that the games are absolutely not for kids and the parents STILL insist that it's perfectly fine.

I completely agree that kids shouldn't be playing the violent stuff, but the fact that the Jack Thompsons of the world insist that it's the ESRB's job to parent for someone else is absurd.

And on a related note, the ESRB itself is spineless and completely at the mercy of lawmakers who don't know what they hell they are talking about. What's the difference between M and AO? An extra few seconds of torture or nudity as far as the actual rating card lists it. Their rating system is good and straightforward , but they refuse to stand by the ratings they made? Manhunt SHOULD be AO. Retailers should carry AO games, but much like M, they should have to card for them.

I'm sick of it. They punish the gamers who aren't doing anything wrong when the real blame for this entire farce is parents who won't nut the hell up and parent their kids.

Stop wasting your time with these ratings but focus on making parents more aware of these games. And also focus on having things like ID checks or something for games.

Hey *****s. If you freaking give the time you waste on this censorship bull***** to sitting and talking with your kids maybe they wouldn't get a hold of these games. Goddamn idiots.

# One point that nobody brought upGuest 2007-08-27 02:18
One point that nobody brought up is the fact that the Wii has the best parental controls of any console out there.

Since this is now an M rated game, all parents have to do is set the rating on the Wii in the settings.

That way, even if a kid puts Manhunt in the Wii, it doesn't even play the game, problem solved.

I guess the CCFC didn't think about that yet. :)

# What the F***Guest 2007-08-27 02:33
Why the F*** do the ccfc think that children will become violent from Man Hunt 2 how are the kids even gonna get their hands on it honestly the issues with Man Hunt 2 were all over the net after their parents see the clips they aren't gonna buy The F***ing game. Plus the wii has parental controls so hows the kid gonna play it?

CCFC is retarded

# wrong way roundGuest 2007-08-27 03:54
do they realise they should be concentrating on cracking down on the sale of a game with this rating and not the game content itself? alcohol should not be sold to under 18's, same goes for m rated games. The game is not being forced upon kids at all, and if the games shops employees were a bit more responsible and vigilant, parents would realise that kids can only get their hands on m rated games via the fault of games shops, NOT games makers. THE RATING IS ON THERE TO STOP KIDS PLAYING UNSUITABLE MATERIAL, IT IS THERE SO PEOPLE CAN MAKE AN INFORMED DESICION, IT IS NOT THERE TO HARM, IT IS THERE TO HELP. is this not obvious to people?

i was wondering is it required that video games be rated by ESRB? If not are they banned from being sold at retailers. Because i know some movies are not rated to escape from being rated NC-17.

# Its not the industry's faultGuest 2007-08-27 05:21
Most of the time the reason a child gets a M rated game is not the fault of the game industry but the fault of a parrent or store. I worked at a store that sold games and even though I told parrents that M rated games were not for 12 year olds they continued to buy them and didnt care. They are probably the same people who protest about it after seeing the game's true content. The other problems is some stores in smaller areas arent as strict about only selling M rated games to 17+. Dont blame the makes of the game blame the sellers and buyers.
