Make room for more: PSP Go DL titles to average 600-800MB

PSP Go - Image 1The PSP Go is going the way of the digital. Apart from the "What about the retailers" question, the more important query is: how much space will the downloadable titles need to nestle safe in the PSP Go's sliding screen arms? Al de Leon of Sony has the answer to that question, and spoke about it in an NYC event.

"600-800MB in size," said de Leon, which would then mean that that 16GB capacity of the handheld (stock) would be able to hold up to 17-18 games. Not bad, right? And you can obviously go for more if you get an extra 16GB.

Of course, the 600-800MB size is not a universal size for all games. There will be those that will require more, while some may require much less.

» soo only 600-800MB?

So it looks like we wont be getting any games like GTA for PSP Go because those game are always *****ing big. GOW and Final Fantasy VII as well and a *****load more.

» /Facepalm

So GTA Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories never existed? Funny that theyre sat in my psp collection. And the 600-800 is the projected average. Therefore larger can be done. Therefore you mikal do not "rokz", you fail. Epicly.

by CaptainObvious1 - 2009-06-25 18:24
» Neg

All it means is that the average downloadable game filesize is 6-800

It's not as if they said 'DO NOT MAKE GAMES OVER 1GB OR WE WILL CONDEMN IT'

Safe to say we'll see large games for download no matter what

by Cyber-X- - 2009-06-25 19:40
» Big games are just going to be compressed.

Even though the game download will be 800MB the actual game content in the file can be 1.8GB.

Sony is simply going to use compression.

As there already doing on some games like PS1 title Metal Gear Solid from PSN.

by mikal_rokz - 2009-06-25 21:29
» sorry should have REFRAISED THAT KINGPOUBAR...

What I meant was, that will larger games already on UMD such as GTA and GOW be released for download or will sony only put small games up there and maybe the newer ones will be smaller apart from the odd exception. AHHH I CANT EXPLAIN MYSELF! OK anyway Im not quite sure where you managed to get that GTA never existed? But thankyou captainobvious (great name btw) for that because skim reading that says that only small games will be released from now on.

by Silver-Tiger - 2009-06-25 22:34
» ...

of course there will be biggr and also much smaller games. I think they will use a similar compression like the one in CSOs. When you compare bought PSP games form the PSN Store with UMD ones compressed with CISO, you nearly get the same size.

Oh, and here is a mathematical example for the people who still doesn't get "average size":

Let's take a 1600 MB sized game and a 100 MB small game. If you add 1600 to 100 MB, you get 1700 MB. Now you only need to divide the number with the amount of games, that would be two. You get an average size of 850 MB, even though you had an 1,6 GB big game.

Got that now?

by nall256 - 2009-06-26 02:05
» 800 to 1.8?

That kind of compression is the stuff of legends... I'm not quite sure if that level of compression is possible with a game.

by Teivin - 2009-06-26 02:46
» ^

That kind of compression is fairly easy. Using a CSO compressor, some PSX and PSP games compress down to almost 80% of their original size at times, while other games like Dissidia actually get a little bigger when compressed. (I dont understand that one, myself.)

by Teivin - 2009-06-26 02:51
» Peh

20% of their size, my mistake. meaning an 80% compression ratio. This thing needs an edit, fo sho.

by MangoScango - 2009-06-26 03:10
» you know...

a built in PSN Store on the PSP is fairly useless, considering the Download speed.

Its gonna suck if your computers broken

They should have put USB3.0 (For transfers, once newer computers get it)and a better wifi card in the go..

by jrsmaster411 - 2009-06-26 05:39
» what?

do you not know what average means? theirs gonna be games like holy invasion of badman which is 40mb and then 1.3gig games like gta which if those were the only two games in the store than the average would be around 600mb. Maybe you should go back to elementary math and find out what average means

by Cyber-X- - 2009-06-26 05:41
» 600-800MB size is not a universal size for all games.

^ Reading the article properly before comments usually helps..

It's obvious that Sony uses compression on most if not all of there PSN content.

To minimize the download size.

And save you space.

But not all games will be compressed to such size.

While most will be smaller.

No one said that there won't be bigger games then 800MB for download.

Final Fantasy VII from PSN is about 1.3 GB (1,300MB)

by LeXiO - 2009-06-26 06:54
» common sense, least it should be

We all know that the max size on a UMD is 1.7GBs or so. Some games use most of it, and some games barely reach 300MB. So it's pretty obvious that games are going to be still in the same area. 600-800MB is just the average size for most games. Games like Dante's Inferno, and Gran Turismo are probably well over 1GB right now.

Also, people are forgetting, the PSP just isn't for games. If I had the option to, which I do, I would put in music and movies as well, not just games. So even though you'll probably be able to fit 10 or so games in, you still have to leave room for music and videos.

by SolidSnake117 - 2009-06-26 07:54
» Well...

N+ = 30MB when you download the cso off "website"

GTA LCS = 3**MB when you download cso

Final Fantasy = 1***MB when you download cso

See? it shows that games can range from different sizing.

Compare N+ to GTA, N+ is a 2D game that you jump around in screen sized levels, there isnt much code needed to make such a game and all the background images could be .jpg

While GTA games, they have massive cities worth of 3D models, next they have tons of collision codes. the cities have tons of building which have tons of 3D models which add up to be a big number of files and file sizes

Compared to the N+'s jpg's which are 556KB each

by icypsp - 2009-06-26 09:08
» yea true true

youre right if those games are not ripped.

not to mention both the GTA games lagg like h3ll the moment they are compresses. well maybe if its below an 8. put it like this, they are going to do what they want to do, we will probably get about 10 or 12 games on that console with a few extras. Thats not too bad lol. I read a comment stating who listens to 20,000 songs, well now we are going to have outrageous amounts of games on or console too.

by hush404 - 2009-06-26 10:17
» hmm

I think someone missed something. The first post says from 800mb to 1.8gb... that's over double 800mb and yet nall is spewing that compression like that is insane?

k.

Also. I think 800-600 is reasonable... but Would love to see a system in place that allowed sony to compress them in some sort of format (think PC Zip) in that the download file would be smaller than upwards of 800mb but uncompress for play while in your Go. Thus you'd need that 800mb of space left for play of each game (as 800mb of ram would be insane eh?) but then have many more games on teh device because of this compression, just sitting ready to unpack and play.

That would be nifty.

» Uh?

How are the retailers being left out? They're selling Patapon 2 game vouchers at Target, GameStop, Walmart, etc. right now...

by JETFIRE007 - 2009-06-26 15:13
» huh?

what are you talking about what does retailers have to do with this?

by lunas - 2009-06-26 18:16
» the retailers may have vouchers

The problem is with download vouchers is you have to download the game which means you need to leave your system sit on with an internet connection that tops out at 11Mbs you will never see that high to download a 800meg-1.4gig file i had to re download grumin on my psp and it took a freaking hour.

The solution to that problem was the ps3 b/g wifi and 10/100/1000 eithernet. But not everyone has a ps3.

Also you cant just hand your friend a voucher and let him play the game on his psp you have to hand him your psp because the games will only play on your psp... no rental service no used games. That is what every one is pissed off about.

by racing59pinto - 2009-06-27 02:22
» end the used game market

i will be quite happy to see the day when there are no more used games. developers will be much better compensated for the games they make. they will make more games with the better incentives for doing so. also, maybe, they could quit raising the price of games $10 every new gen (probably not though). a used market isnt always the consumer's friend (i hate to see ebgames make money when all they do is sit around, act condesending, and screw people when they trade in games.....sorry)

by racing59pinto - 2009-06-27 02:26
» however

i do love ebgames for their rental service. buy a used game, play it for a week, and return it for a 100% refund. cant go wrong. so thank you kid who sold your copy of prototype for $22 1 week after it released, you saved me $60 and gave me just as much time playing it as you had.

» practice grammar

sorry should have "REFRAISED" THAT KINGPOUBAR...

- you failed AGAIN

by Achooist - 2009-06-27 02:53
» HMM

I wonder if they'll make games larger than the maximum UMD size. (1.7 GB if I'm not mistaken..?)

If not, what will the maximum size be?

And will the maximum size be the compressed version or the uncompressed version?

If there isn't a limit, there will be 16GB+ games which would TOTALLY PWN on a PSP...if the hardware could handle it. (Could it?)

by Achooist - 2009-06-27 07:07
» -.-

@JETFIRE007

2nd sentence.

The retailers are scared that games that can only be downloaded will not allow them to make money off of the games because they take part of the money when you buy a game.

@FreePlay

Maybe retailers are scared that vouchers won't be sold once PSP Go is released.

That would be kind of stupid for them not to, not everybody can pay with a credit card, and PSN only takes credit card. (At least as far as I know, never bought anything from PSN)

by Silver-Tiger - 2009-06-27 11:57
» WHAT?

I used the exactly the same way to calculate the average size. I only used different numbers.

My example: 100 + 1600 / 2 + 850

Your example: 40 + 1300 / 2 + 670

by Silver-Tiger - 2009-06-27 12:01
» dammit QJ....

the last two "plus" should be EQUAL:

My example: 100 + 1600 / 2 EQUALS 850

Your example: 40 + 1300 / 2 EQUALS 670

by FreePlay - 2009-06-27 19:37
» ...

You do realize that there's a PSN Store client for the PC, right? No need to do all your downloading on a PSP...

by truk - 2009-06-28 07:56
» you know what would suck even more?

your computer being broken and not having psn store on your psp.

options are AWESOME
