Earlier we reported that after October 1, all first-party PSP titles will be available as digital downloads. Now Jeff Rubenstein's back with a bit of good news for those who want downloadable versions of their old games.
Speaking to Joystiq, Rubenstein revealed that "the majority of back catalog PSP games will be made available for download around the launch of the PSP Go." That's not just first-party games either. Rubenstein clarified that he's talking about the majority of the PSP's whole back catalog.
Now all we need is more info on that good will program for UMD owners that John Koller talked about. Oh, and price. I know I'm not the only one who would hate to pay again for a game I already bought.

And if you have to use your umd to get a free download, how will it stop you from borrowing someone else's disk and getting a free download? Are the umd disks identifiable with a serial number of sorts?

Microsoft where i had to pay 800MS Points just to change my gamertag? Or to download avatars or themes.
Or where you weren't able to transfer over your saves from the old Xbox. (PS1/2 -> PS3 also but at least it was actually doable and didn't have to do a huge work around).
They'll find a way.

yeah, sure, but if you own the PSone game on a disk, you can actually still play it with the PS3. With the PSP Go, you can't play your old games, so it's a little bit different.

It's a real shame that an official firmware UMD dumper doesn't exist. To help eliminate the possibility of abuse a periodic license renewal could be required in which license files on the memory stick were validated against the physical UMD again.
