PSP Go - Image 1

Earlier we reported that after October 1, all first-party PSP titles will be available as digital downloads. Now Jeff Rubenstein's back with a bit of good news for those who want downloadable versions of their old games.

Speaking to Joystiq, Rubenstein revealed that "the majority of back catalog PSP games will be made available for download around the launch of the PSP Go." That's not just first-party games either. Rubenstein clarified that he's talking about the majority of the PSP's whole back catalog.

Now all we need is more info on that good will program for UMD owners that John Koller talked about. Oh, and price. I know I'm not the only one who would hate to pay again for a game I already bought.

You want sh1t titles spamming the network?

» What about games with buggy saves?

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max (among others) had this nasty save glitch where you had to have less than 2 GB of space, simply because larger memory sticks weren't made/supported yet. I'd love some sort of patch, but apparently Puzzle Quest is still bugged on the PSN, so I'm not holding out much hope. Otherwise we'd probably have to fill 15 GB with other stuff just to save.

» ...do you...

...have to buy the game again, or will it detect your umd copy and allow you to download for free?

And if you have to use your umd to get a free download, how will it stop you from borrowing someone else's disk and getting a free download? Are the umd disks identifiable with a serial number of sorts?

» We'll most likely have to buy our old games again

It's unfortunate, but I highly doubt Sony would take the risk of giving consumers who already bought the umd version the priveledge of downloading the same game for free. It seems like they'd have to go through extreme measures in order for it to work and they don't have the time or patience to do something that wouldn't benefit them financially in the long run. I could be wrong, but right now I just don't see it happening.

Are you kidding, there is no way you'd have to re-buy your games. You can probably just send the UMD's into Sony and they will let you download it from the playstation store.

» eh....

I'm fairly sure they are going to come up with a way to download our games. Maybe by serial or through the actual PSP itself who knows. Sony isn't exactly CRAZY money hungry as let's say....oh i don't know

Microsoft where i had to pay 800MS Points just to change my gamertag? Or to download avatars or themes.

Or where you weren't able to transfer over your saves from the old Xbox. (PS1/2 -> PS3 also but at least it was actually doable and didn't have to do a huge work around).

They'll find a way.

» no sony will not make an alternative

why would sony miss out on more sales? And there was no free PSN downloads for ps1 games if you already had the disk either.

@sickofitall:

yeah, sure, but if you own the PSone game on a disk, you can actually still play it with the PS3. With the PSP Go, you can't play your old games, so it's a little bit different.

» Pricing

I hope these older titles are priced appropriately and not at their original retail prices. Digital copies are nice and all in terms of convenience, but not when I can buy a used copy of the UMD for 50% less.

It's a real shame that an official firmware UMD dumper doesn't exist. To help eliminate the possibility of abuse a periodic license renewal could be required in which license files on the memory stick were validated against the physical UMD again.
