Live from the Sony Press Conference - (UPDATE# 24) |

Our man Chris G is in the heart of the Sony Press Conference, and we'll be updating this blog post with his up to the minute accounts of just what's going down over there. The conference started quite a bit later than it was supposed to (10 minutes late), but rest assured it won't be long till you get the answers you crave.
This post will stay on top to give you quick access to news as it breaks. For other E3 news, please scroll further down.
UPDATE 1: Five PSP titles have just reached Greatest Hits status, they are Ape Escape, ATV offroad, Hot Shots, Twisted Metal, WipeOut Pure. (I'll take me some cheapo Wipeout thanks!)
UPDATE 2: Confirmation that the GPS and Camera accessories for the PSP are indeed on the way and will be here soon. Does anyone care? The camera could be pretty neat though.
UPDATE 3: ALL PS3's to ship with a Hard Drive... YAY! Two different configurations. One with a 20GB HDD retailing for $500, and the second configuration with a 60GB HDD for $600. Start saving guys.
UPDATE 4: Next Gran Turismo shown in High Definition
UPDATE 5: PS3 will be playable on show floor, with some of the games running on final realtime dev kits.
UPDATE 6: Gran Turismo is targeting 1080p, it uses the HDD to lower loading times to just a few seconds... 2-3 seconds actually. BOOYAA!
UPDATE 7: Turns out the Gran Turismo demo is really just GT:4 running at 12 times the resolution, it looks amazing but not head and shoulders above PGR:3. Still, it's just a demo.
UPDATE 8: Kaz Hirai demo's the PSP's PSone emulator, playing Ridge Racer 1 in letterbox widescreen. I want to have his children.
UPDATE 9: PS3's basic networking service will be free and include voice messaging, text messaging, player profiles, account management, video chat, and access to the latest info... whatever that last part means.
UPDATE 10: Phil Harrison demo's the PS3 interface, purchases a few songs and game specific content, levels, characters etc.
UPDATE 11: Heavenly Sword is demo'd using a PS2 Dual Shock. The red haired protagonist takes on hordes of bad guys in a sun soaked arena. The animation's fantastic. CRAZY Badass areial combat as well! Looks just about as good as last year's E3 demo save for some jaggies.
UPDATE 12: Lair is shown, there's no way this real time... it looks too good! Huge dragons, fluid animation and some breathtaking action as a character leaps off his ride, flying through the air before landing on his enemies beast, stabbing it in the wing as he does so.
UPDATE 13: The Getaway is also shown, it also looks too good to be true. I think everyone's in denial at this point. The camera pans across a busy London street as people walk by and cars zoom past the screen. it continues to pull into a dark alleyway showing us the hardened face of a man, his arm outstretched. The camera travels down his arm till it reaches the tip of a smoking gun, continuing its lazy movement it finally comes to rest by the side of a slumped body.
UPDATE 14: Sweet MOSES! Naughty Dog's new game is shown, not title yet but it looks amazing. Think young Indiana Jones. A young man in a white t-shirt and jeans jumps gaps, avoids traps and trades bullets and punches in a jungle environment that's part Tomb Raider part Temple of Doom.
UPDATE 15: Resistance: Fall of Man has gone leaps and bounds ahead of when we last saw it. The 360 is going to have to pull something really special to match the visual fidelity on display so far. 32 player online multiplayer and it's going to be playable on the show floor. Look forward to our impressions.
UPDATE 16: Tekken's underwhelming. Nowhere near as good as the CG demo last year. Maybe the gameplay's been altered? Next please.
UPDATE 17: Amazing footage shown of a game called Eight Days. Looks to be set in Phoenix, there's a car chase through the desert some guys lean out of their ride to take pot shots at the car in the lead, there's tumbling and exploding as the car is torn apart. Cut to a roadblock in the middle of the desert, a firefight breaks out which spills into a nearby diner. The animation and physics are off the hook. No way this all realtime gameplay.
UPDATE 18: Coded arms is coming to the PS3... because you loved it so much on the PSP.
UPDATE 19: NBA Live 07....spooky. They move just like human beings. Emphasis on "footplanting". No more sliding around the floor here.
UPDATE 20: Tiger Woods PS3 demo of facial expressions and animation. Swear it looks real... real I tell you.
UPDATE 21: An extended Final Fantasy 13 video is shown... it looks even better than the Final Fantasy 7 tech video shown last year.
UPDATE 22: Sony's controller is a Wiimote. Microsoft am cry. Nintendo huffs off in an angry rage.
UPDATE 23: Warhawk is demo'd using the new PS3 Dual Shock /Wiimote capabilities. The player tilts the controller like a plane, banking left, right up and down to control the aircraft. Looks pretty cool but the player looks like a ninny. Gamers everywhere am cry.
UPDATE 24: North American release date is Nov 17th. Two launch configurations.

Why post that in the DS section? It's not like a Sony press conference would have anything to do with Nintendo, unless they suddenly have a magical agreement to start making mutliplayer games that are PSP and DS compatible.

No, the potential for wireless sattelite internet is extremely unlikely. GPS devices rarely (If ever) send signals up to the sattelites in space, they just recieve the signals coming down, triangulate based on angle/position/signal strength (or something like that) from the sattelites, and get an approximate point accurate somewhere within 10-20 feet depending on the number of sattelites in range to help verify data. Unfortunately this means the system is is completely bunk if there are less than 3 sattelites within range.
basically, the only way you could get sattelite internet with this thing is if you carried around a mini-dish that you kept continuously pointed in the direction of the sattelite. The alternative would be to use an extreme high power transmitter which doesn't go over to well with the FCC, may give you brain cancer, and would eat through tons of battery. Another problem that comes up is the considerably higher lag time you get on sattelite internet, thus making online games laggy and unplayable.
In summary, NO YOU THICK BASTARD
And @1, the downloads are gonna be temporary ones that aren't saved to the mem stick so STFU already!

on the gamespot e3 live sony conference they just showed a demo of the ps1 emulator of the guy playing ridge racer up and you can even adjust the sreen size,just like the loco rocco demo you have to go to the memory stick icon under the game icon to load the game up. load times look great

Ok, so Eight Days used the trickery of blending real-time with cut-scene, layering your bullet count and health overtop of a cut-scene. Leading you to beleive (from our perspective) that you are in complete real-time..Nice graphics though

This is incredibly underwealming. Graphics of my PC match anything theyve shown there (and by the time its out I'll have a gfx card twice as powerful). And the games are all rehashes and horrificly bland and uninteresting looking.

Glad we've got confirmation on VOIP and Eyetoy for the PSP. They both sounded kind of sketchy to me originally. Interesting that there's no mention of the built in flash memory banks that have been floating around as rumours for a while now... Maybe our current PSPs aren't obsolete yet!
Sony's not dumb - they know what stuff's going to hit the hardest right now, and it sure sounds like they're giving it their all. It'll be interesting to see how well all of their planned changes and revolutions stand up when we're watching them on our own televisions.

Price $499, a little higher than the recent rumored 399 but seing that this thing comes with a harddrive and has a freaking Blu-ray player, it's worth every single penny. I actually think its a steal!

the price is fine for me, i knew it wouldnt be any less cause of the bd-player. but hey at least we get the next gen high def player for cheaper. and with games being published at full quality. they dont have to compress the games and loose quality.

All that conference did was bore me for an hour, then hit me with some kinda cool stuff. FFXIII and MGS4 were obviously the best points. Then the price put me off completely. It'll cost me $640 when I include tax. Then I'd have to get games and accessories. Sorry Sony, maybe after two or three price drops.

Sony is great at adapting. They see what works and make it better. Look at their control designs. They take good ideas and make them great.
I think that was just Sony's way of stealing the Wii's thunder. I feel really bad for nintendo because is not like they can counter act anything PS3 does.

Nintendo fanboys, stop complaining. A gyroscope in a controller is a great idea, and the Wii was the first to announce that, but heck, analog sticks were copied off Nintendo and now essential in every game controller.
If no body "copied off" there would only be one brand of computer in the world. Only one type of video game console in the world. It goes on and on.
And that presentation, near the end, simply amazed me. I want a PS3 so bad.

People can spend $400 on an XBOX 360, but 100 more dollars for hundreds of dollars worth of more features, and these fanboys start flipping. Be glad its not $800(which is how much one of these costs to make, I think).
Think of it, since this thing will run Linux, it will be like a $500 dollar computer, which is a pretty good price for the power. Oh, and this computer will also have a Blu-Ray player, which are $500 on their own. Oh yeah - one more thing, this computer plays awesome games. Don't complain about price, Sony are losing enough money per unit anyway.

While the PS3 is an unbelievable piece of hardware it is considerably cheaper than what you could expect from a developers perspective. If you look at the parts list and what it would cost to build this thing, sony will almost be at a loss for a couple years at least. For instance, look at the price projections for bd players alone (upwards of $500 as was previously mentioned).
Its almost hard for me to believe that such an important company as sony would put itsself at a loss to improve the gaming and digital entertainment industry as a whole.
I personally like the controller idea much more than the wii. It just seems sooooo much more... uhh... USEABLE!!

the only thing Nintedo invented on its own is the Cross D pad and the A B buton system. the NES A B butons are smaller sized Atari 2600 butons even down to the same color, the start and select butions where on one of the other Atari systems before NES, and the Joy stick was originaly on the Atari 2600. Nintendo just braugh it back after not using it for many years. stop acting like Nintendo is Video game gods, saying they are the only ones with original thoughts. You can, and i can say things about the competition but does that change anything? no... but what is certain, Sony's Crown isn't going anywhere.
$499 for the 20Gb PS3 is more than acceptable and $599 for the 60Gb PS3 is also acceptable given it's functionality and mind-blowing gaming library. The 20GB hdd for the 360 costs like $120+ ... and not to mention if M$ want to release a larger HDD that $120 is looking like $200+... and I for one will not bother with that.
Sony has NOT copied ANYONE in their console market. As other have said Sony had a patent before the Wiimote was revealed, and Sony PLANNED online gaming for the PS2 YEARS before the Xbox, and the HDD Add-on...so stop trying to confort ur insecurities.
About the conference: I was aboslutely amazed, with both the INGAME demos that were shown and also the upcoming titles - This is just one reason why Sony is the king... they have THE greatest franchises EVER... period. Eight Days, Heavenly Sword are just two new franchises that look absolutely amazing...
I'm also very happy that they kept their 'Dual Shock' Design for the controller, because IMO it's the best controller ever! And that motion Sensitivity... well, that just added ANOTHER element to the console that the 360 can't do.
All i can say is, if M$ disappoint me at their conference and the quality of games don't pick up...then ouch, i wasted $1000 for nothing.

To all those that are ranting.. You haven't been playing games that long have you.. On Consoles or PC.. Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle Pro gamepad for PC came out years ago with motion sensitivity.. and furthermore all of Sony's consoles have roughly been this price on release.
Sony have put a lot of research into this console.. Many surveys found that the original Dual Shock design is the preferred gamepad of choice.

First if you hear from the people that were there and werenāt just getting sloppy low Res streams (PS3 with that low quality stream does look like the 360 in my living room, I guess youāre right), you would know that the graphics were unbelievable.
The Final Fantasy demo showed battle scenes, which is more than most FF demos show when they first appear on the console. FF13 was stated as being started a very long time ago almost alongside of development with FF12.
Actually no one believed it would be less than 399 since it will include a Blu-Ray Player. Even at 399, it was completely refuted because it would just be too expensive. At this price it would be a feeding frenzy and it would be chaos! So itās good that they included the Hard Drive and raised the price to the same as the 499 Xbox (which gives you a lot less for you money).
Sure Wii will have some trick up their sleeve but its doubtlful they will show more of the hardware than they already have. It looks like it will just be games this time around. Don't believe crazy rumors about helmets or extra nunchucks. Even if they do, it sounds very silly and almost against what they're trying to accomplish.
Actually I make 90k a year and recent research points out that most gamers, nowadays, are well paid and older than the past. You must be a 12 year who has to sell limonade on the weekends to afford your games. Well I think the Wii (Kiddie gamerās dream with pokemon and kirby) is for you then. The Next Gen is for the men/women not the boys. MSG4/FF13/Heavenly Sword are all ground up games.
PS3 is for the hard core gaming market not the market Nintendo is endlessly trying to chase. I am sorry, but I donāt think they can beat free flash games on people's computers and that exactly what casual gamers play. Flash is wii's competition not the PS3. 360 however is a sole PS3ās direct competitor.
The $499 price tag comes with a lot more than simply 40 gigs less of space.

Everywhere I look the core (no HD) system is 399. If you want the harddrive you have to pay for it seperately. If you want the premium system which doesnt seem to include the harddrive but does come with a wireless box and 2 wireless controllers.

You can tell how eager I have been in the last 6 month to pay any attention to the xbox 360's price. The only game I wanted was Oblivion and luckily the PC took care of that fix.
the way i see it is, the system comes out in six months. i'm pretty sure i can save a few hundred bucks from now until November. problem solved. hell, i think i'll put away $200 when i paid this friday. that's already a quarter of the price! i save up another $200 when i get paid in another two weeks, we're at $400 dollars. in about a month and half, i'd have enough for a PS3 itself. save up another $200, and that's at least 3-4 games depending on the price. also, if more people are turned off by the initial price, that means there may actually be units in the stores! of course, i could just wait until next year when the price drops (you know it will.) by December 2007, the PS3 will probably be down to $400. for the 60gig unit.
You all act like that Sony is the best and should be the only system on the market, or xbox should be the only system on the market, or nintendo. Personally I think Sony is on the right track, but I don't agree with the way they treat their consumers...
Also... and this is something that I've never really understood... how do you stand by a company who wouldn't even fix their faulty ps2's when they first arrived? Why do you think so many ps2s were sold? How many ps2 owners have owned more than 1, and I'm talking paid for both, didn't send it in and get it fixed or anything. Every single person, including myself, has owned more than 1 ps2.... thats like taking steroids to break records.... but that's another story.

@Freeplay: The 20GB version doesn't has some of the funcionalities of the 60GB one.

It might be 299 for a 360 but in most sites you wont find them for that price. Just look around. No one is selling non bundle ones. That's why everyone misposted the price so high.
When it comes to Sony and MS it has never been about the graphics. It about the games. Playstation consoles always have the biggest and baddest game libraries hands down. Graphics and connectivity are great and that's it why MS took second place to the shameful and arrogant Nintendo co. but it's about the games. PS3 is truly for the hardcore gamer. Not for people who want to play 5 or ten minutes before their arm gets sore, and not for people who only want to play FPSs. This is for all hard core gamers.
Nintendo Wiiners keep saying that Sony and MS are just trying to steal your money. Well what the heck do you think Nintendo is doing? They know they cant compete with Sony because they don't meet the hard core gamer's demands. What do they do instead, well they go after non gamers in order to bring cash. They say they are taking a risk but are they really? Are they spending millions trying to improve technology or even tapping into other things besides games? No. They are just saying "we give up, lets just make a Tiger like minigame machine and try to tap a market where the is no competition except maybe cheap Tiger games". As a gamer and a ex-Nintendo fan This makes me sick. Their conference finished a few hours ago and what a let down it was. Nothing shocking at all. Chris C. (a long time Nintendo fanboy who always post biased blogs) claims that he is a Sony fanboy but then fills up like 10 updates of the 24 with comments like "Ohh Nintendo is great!" "Iwata is so cute" (I guess just to fill in the same amount of updates as the PS conference). For the PS3 he only had facts and lots of them. No hype just pure updates because Sony didn't need some fan to "fill in" their conference updates with dumb comments. They simply took over E3 with straight facts!

i cant believe sony would get rid of the hdmi port, the wifi, and 40gb. it's like taking off a baby's arm u need the wifi for the psp and the 40gb i could live without but it would be helpful. and the hdmi port, taking that away takes away the high definition so there would be absolutely no point whatsoever to even have the blueray except for the games which most of them are small enough to be put on a dvd...i would say sony's askin a bit much for a lot u can't use i would recommend not being cheap and buy the 60gig pack it would be well worth it. and i forgot to mention that the wireless controlers are also gone do to taking out the wifi and they hook up to the usb. i will be angry but being the sony fan that i am i will buy the 60gig ps3 pack even though i think the price is rediculus.
Sephiroth you don't sound like a sony fanboy cause you seem no know nothing about what the cheaper version includes. No HDMI doesn't mean no HDTV it just means HD up to par with the 360 (up to 1080i which is really just 740p).
So just to clear up the rest
* Controller is bluetooth nothing to do with Wi-Fi
* PSP connects using the USB cable
* HDMI is needed for super HD playback (1080p)
* 599 version still seems like a steal and the one to get, but for those poor gamers that wont buy an HDTV the 499 should be just fine.
* No SD/Compact flash reader just means you will need to transfer files using usb cables
* Sony has won E3 again.

You can still connect to the internet with the Ethernet adapter that's included. However there is no wireless adapter in the 500 version. Online play will be free of charge.
500 doesnt disable any features. You can pretty much do everything you can with the 599 version. Well maybe not read memory sticks but I am sure the products (camera, psp) that use those memory sticks have USB cables which you can use to connect to your PS3 and then the PS3 can access those files.
You guys have to admit Sony won on the conference side (Not E3 since it's not over). I know it's hard to swallow for the Nintendo fanboys like myself but I give credit where credit is due.
The reason Sony won was the amount of information which they released. They pretty much shut down all the critics and came out guns blazing give the fans everything they wanted to see. Here are a few key notes from all.
PS3
* Comes with Hard Drive - Good news for Sony fans
* Real-time Games graphics look as good (movie like) as they say it would (go to IGN or gamespot and they will confirm)
* Very good games on display Innocence Fall of man, FFXIII and Heavenly Sword looked amazing! See the video from IGN which is much better then the one at Gamespot for a better look at graphics.
* Glimpse of their new Network - Buy songs, movies and games plus they integrate with gameplay, i.e singstar.
* Price announced - Sony fans relieved is not $1000
* Release date announced. They promised large shipments by end of year.
* More Game Videos. Again the critics cant believe it's realtime, sony leaves them doubting and thinking wow imagine they are realtime.
* MSG4 trailer left everyone drooling. Really the game to beat at this E3. Konami just release an extended trailer and it's simple amazing and Real Time despite all the criticism.
* Controller with new tilting functionality - Super shock value (you could here the "wows I can't believe they did that" in the crow)
* Game play on the actual show floor. - Let everyone feel the games then and there, IGN/Gamespot reported they were awesome. Warhawk was great with the new tilting functionality
Nintendo
* Zelda Announced as launch title - hmm this is a GC game, will be awesome but not really shocking. Now if it was a new Zelda made specifically for Wii, I would have been blown away and probably soaked myself! This is like releasing FF12 on the PS2. We know know it will play on the PS3 and the graphics will get a boast but nothing new. Having FF13 announced is more like it!
* Mario and Metroid announced - Just a glimpses of them. No live game play WTF?
* Many games announced to be playable - Most are GC games that will just enable the Wii controller (WTF spongebob?)
* Graphics of the Wii finally shown to the world - IGN reported that on the big screen they looked like DS games, =(
* Iwata reveals Wii will never sleep - Huh? We actually want that functionality, damn must of missed the memo.
* Red Steal revealed - This seems like it will make a great game for the Wiimote but hmm those graphics look like PS2 not even GC graphics. What's up with that?
* Wiimote will come with microphone and it's numchuck will also sense movement- Now that's what I'm talking about. Something new.
MS
* You will have your Phone/PC and 360 connect to live services. - Might be good but not really exiting It actually sends the reoccuring message that the 360 is just a PC wannabe.
* GTA 4 will be released first for the 360. Correction Mr. Moore the PS3 will get it at the same time.
* HDDVD drive and Camera announced. But no details! WTF very disappointing if you ask me since we already knew it was coming. It's actually sad for 360 fans that to hear it will be release in Dec and not earlier.
* Gears of War, Viva piƱata and Fable 2 will be great new games for the 360, Good start, but nothing really exiting well nothing new actually.
* Halo 3 trailer - very nice and a nice tease. Good job there but it was very short and didn't display game play and no release date. Again nothing we didn't know. (Who didn't know Halo 3 would come to the 360?)
So if you tell me Sony didn't win this I would have a hard time believing you. Unless your a real big fanboy of a competing system it is obvious Sony gave their fans exactly what they were asking for. You might of found it boring but that's because you don't want anything Sony has to offer and the more they offered the more upset and bored you get as the fanboy inside you kicks in.

190 - It's not about the actual patent. Do you actually believe that Nintendo's only idea to try motion sensitivity was the Wiimote? Do you seriously think that neither Sony or Nintendo tried other ways to incorporate it? What's important is the big idea behind the patent. Using motion as a means to control the game, rather than pressing a button.. Both Sony and Nintendo have been tinkering with it for years now. Nintendo incorporated into the Game Boy Advanced with "Kirby's Tilt & Tumble". Sony's Eye Toy is very similar to that patent i linked earlier.
All i am saying is that nobody's copying anybody. Sony has been playing with it for a while now, so has Nintendo. The difference is, Sony is making it a standard in their controller through tilt sensitivity, whilst mantaining the button standard, and Nintendo is innovating the use of the controller by making motion sensitivity the main control function.
BTW - I wasn't trying to prove anyone wrong, i was just putting information out there, assuming you'd look at the bigger picture. I assumed wrong. If you would stop look for means to discredit people that don't APPEAR to see things EXACTLY your way, you might start to realize that they might actually make sense and might AGREE with you. Also, while i enjoy debating online, fighting is so trivial and brings you nothing except for hatred and extreme anger at a mere username.
