The PSP 3000 - Image 1

The event currently going down at Leipzig is now officially more exciting than E3. Taking the ace out of its sleeve, Sony has just officially announced the PSP-3000 at their press conference. Speculate no more folks, here's the skinny.

According to David Reeves, the PSP-3000 will have its own built-in microphone, and has an enhanced LCD screen that will “increase intensity and the number of colours that can be displayed – and is easier to view in natural light."

That's a pic of it up there. The unit will launch on October 15 in PAL territories, tagged at EUR 199 (US$ 292).

PSP Entertainment Pack bundle - Image 1

*Update* We now also got word from the US Sony blogs that the PSP-3000 is also coming to North America as part of the Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack bundle. They've also now announced a PSP 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack which includes a 4GB memstick PRO Duo.

The Entertainment Packs with the updated PSP-3000 will be retailed for the same standard price of US$ 199.99. And later on this year, Sony will be releasing the PSP-3000 Core Pack, which will also keep its regular price of US$ 169.99.

» Breaking news!

Sony has came out with Biggest BS idea yet! Let`s take a psp, add a microphone, slightly brighter screen, and put a PS logo for home and make the lower buttons oval! Then we`ll name it the PSP-3000! These major new features will surely make those current psp owners upgrade for $170, which we hope many these suckers will do! Sadly, this is true and will happen.

by FreePlay - 2008-08-20 10:35
» The real imrovement list...

* Brighter LCD with quicker response time (12ms vs the current 60ms in the slim - prevents ghosting and black smearing)

* Built-in microphone

* Improved UMD lens system with less power usage

* More durable case

* Longer-life battery (~4200mAh)

* 480p video output being considered, might not be in the final (vs. 480i in the PSP-2000)

BTW, the first gen PSP-3000 will NOT have the LCD with the quicker response time; if you want that, hold off until they start selling them in the multi-colored starter packs.

» Not enough changes

I don't think Sony changed enough on the system to make customers buy. If you look at Nintendo's record, every new system had a new design and new features. If Sony really wants to wow its fans they should do a completely new design. The least they could do was fix the true downfalls of the system such as another analog stick.

by FreePlay - 2008-08-20 16:48
» "What do you mean by multi-colored starter packs?"

My understanding is that they'll have a bunch of different colors of a 'core' pack, which will be just the PSP, maybe a soft case and wrist strap or whatever junk they normally throw in there. Once those come around we should be seeing the new LCD.

Up until then, the core pack will still have the first gen PSP3000 LCD.

@ freeplay's observation. . .

see it goes like this

ds + ds (argue that one, i dare you)

ds lite + ds + lite.

see, its still the same system, not a new system, they just put a light in it (fantastic btw, if you liked the ds. also, if youve ever esed a nintendo handheld product then you knew already that this would happen.)

so really. . . i hate to have to do this but it seems youre just replying for the sake of replying and if i werent bored i really wouldnt care. . . not that i do. . . just that im bored.

So the rumour in China is true?!

Well the design look exactly the same, only that the side is curved and button Home is changed to PS.

GOSH! The RAM is still the same. 64MB. WIFI too! (IEEE 802.11b). MAKE IT TO (802.11g)!

I thought Sony would put HDD to the PSP.

NOT WORTH IT IF I UPGRADE. CAUSE IT JUST HAS SMALL CHANGE TO THE PSP.

But how about the Touchscreen feature?

Did sony send to FCC for test? Did they confirm to have it?

Maybe it will be in the next PSP(PSP-4000).

by Nineball - 2008-08-20 23:05
» If they were going to change anything...

...then why not the D-Pad? Me want diagonals without having to get a stick-on pad that makes the PSP hard to put away in a case.

by marich06 - 2008-08-20 23:56
» no big deal really( to dbzking)

the new 80 gig is just a 40 gig with 40 more gigs of hd space. honestly there is no reason to get upset, just appreciate what u have and if the new harddrive sizes and price changes really bother you , buy a harddrive offline. they have great deals online for hard drives compatible with the ps3. i was looking at a 250 gig for 90 bucks a while back. Sony just doing what they do best and that's simply selling their product by any means nessecary.

by Torch - 2008-08-21 00:03
» Yes

Thats very possible. They were originally planning to withhold Pandora until the Slim was released. But in that case it wasn't compatible with the Slim anyway so their surprise didn't really get ruined.

With the current DCs using the 4.xx kernel, it should be relatively easier to get it working on the new PSPs assuming they've got the Custom IPL working somehow.

by Acteon - 2008-08-21 02:28
» Compatibiliy is the word here...

Sony can't upgrade the system beyond the original basic spec, as older systems wouldn't be able to run newer games - it's why there's no second nub.

Given the lack of new games I can't see the point in this upgrade - at least Homebrew gives me something new every once in a while, and if Hellboy is any indication, we're in for a dirth of crap Western titles.

The system is too knackered by piracy to recover in the West. Sony are stuck really - they won't invest in a new product because the console sales are so high globally (especially in Japan), but they can't get the developers on board because it's been hacked to pieces. If they did release a new console they'd piss off all the existing customers, and there's no guarantee anyone would create games for it.

It's a tough position to be in, but I love Sony for producing such an awesome product, just a shame they didn't get it quite right for the market first time out...

by celebv1 - 2008-08-21 03:10
» Its going to sell like hot cakes.

People are gunna eat this up. sure it doesnt have much more than the old one, but its new and shiny and has this and that small feature. all the little kids are going to annoy their parents into buying this.

its homebrew proof, it definitely is, instead of just changing the mobo, they have changed the battery style, and the battery eeprom read. the psp can no longer read the batt serial to go into service mode, instead, when it needs to be serviced, there is an access port in the system

also, the battery is using a newer style, its slightly more efficent, but changes the shape of the battery cells, making it so that you can no longer use a service mode battery, even if D.AleX could hack the newer mobo, there is no way we are going to be able to soft mod it.

im not saying goodbuy to homebrew just yet, im staying with my phat and slim.

by cheses100 - 2008-08-21 04:02
» this is an ok update

This can be a good update but only if it's hackable. If it is then it was worth it to make this update cause i would like a built in microphone and a beter screen although I'm not so sure i woud like to have to buy a whole new psp cause I don't have that much money.

» its not going to be hackable

its not worth it, if this insider news from ``FreePlay`` is correct, and the battery really is using the newer style of lithium ion battery, our last hope for the new mother boards is gone, pandora will not work on the new one.

Also Pandora's battery (well, specifically the fakesigning of the IPL) has already been blocked on TA-088v3 motherboards in the PSP-2000 model. » Any lock can be broken...

It's just a matter of time.

As much as I hate piracy, I hope the PSP-3000 gets hacked for homebrew and ISOs. I don't mind carying around 20 or so DS carts, but UMDs are a a pain to carry in bulk. I much prefer ripping my games to an MS and leaving my library at home.

I plan to get a 3000 when it comes out, I held off on getting a 2000 in anticipation of more changes. Here's hoping I don't get burned.

by Xastabus - 2008-08-22 08:18
» ...

I hope they are. This would help so much in so many games.

Another thing they should do is put a second analog stick on it. Mods have proven that it can be done, as in there is the physical space to do it. There should be enough room for the circuitry as well. This would make so many PS1 games worth buying for PSP and give future PSP games a much needed camera control. FPS games on PSP are a pain with the current default controls.

by Xastabus - 2008-08-22 08:24
» digicron

True, but with each turn of the battle Sony gets wiser and the hacks get tougher. I often say any lock can be broken, but each more secure lock takes more time to break.

The old hacks surely won't work on this new PSP. It will get hacked, we just have to wait.

in the case of the PS3, i think the early adopters where the ones who really got the deal. The PS3 has been getting stripped of hardware and features for software updates.

would you really prefer a new non-bc 80gb over an original partial-bc 80? Luckily I have a launch 60 that still runs like a dream (knocks on wood)
