Ó

LeipzigIt's only October, but from the looks of it, the Leipzig GCDC organizers are planning ahead. Leipzig Messe International just announced that next year's event will be held from August 22-26 at the same site as last August's 'con: Leipzig Messe - the lovely structure to the left.

What's a Leipzig? The Leipzig GCDC, based in Leipzig, Germany, is currently the largest gaming convention in Europe.

And given that the E3 is now an invitation-only affair (Pffffft!), Leipzig has become the biggest game convention in the world, dwarfing even the revered TGS, and bagging a mind-blowing 183,000 visitors, 2,600 press personnel, and 368 exhibitors.

In related news, LMI has also announced it's planning to launch a similar convention in Asia. Titled the Games Convention Asia, this event will take place at the SUNTEC Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre from September 7-9. They're expecting around 105,000 visitors and 200 exhibitors for this event, though given the attendance for Leipzig last year, we're expecting bigger numbers.

Now that you guys know when this event's gonna take place, you better start saving up for that plane ticket to Germany.

Well, I think it's just GC - Games Convention. GCDC is short for the Games Convention Developers Conference - which is a way smaller event, held for press and industry visitors only, right before the "real" GC opens it's doors. And even then, the first day is again press and business visitors only. Common gaming folks storm the exhibition for the last 4 days, overcrowding the walkway tunnels between the halls. Last year 120.000 people visited the GC. It was OK for most of the time. This year more than 180.000 people were there, in the same time frame and exhibition space (roughly). If it's getting even bigger next year, you wont be able to roam around freely and give all the gaming goodness a go. But feel free to experience GC for yourself, it's a blast none the less. My personal highlight this year was Will Wrights appearance to showcase Spore. Most of the show was already known, but being right there next to the mastermind himself is something to remember.
