SCEE to be laying off employees to streamline operations and cut costs - Image 1Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) might be letting go of 10% of their employees due to redundancy and high overhead costs. This came from GameDaily BIZ which received a tip from a "reliable game industry source". Destructoid later released an alleged leaked memo from Sony regarding the lay-offs, pegging the figure at 8.4%. That's about 160 of the 1,900 currently employed at SCEE.

Nick Sharples, SCEE's Director of Corporate Communications, said that the proposed changes are being considered to streamline operations and reduce costs. Included in the plan, is the dropping of the employees. He justified the current proposal of laying-off the 160 employees.

In order to maintain our leading position in the market we sometimes have to make difficult business decisions [such as letting go of some employees]. The management of the company has concluded that we need to change our structure, streamline and strengthen our business operations – and that our cost base needs to be significantly reduced.

It has been confirmed that no-one has been laid off...yet. Suffice to say, a lot of people from SCEE are pretty nervous about their jobs. Is this an indication of bigger problems for SCEE or simply a case of restructuring? More on this as is happens.

yep

Agreed. If they cut employees its because of the sales for the PS3 and PSP. That sucks though because if they do cut 10% of the employees then the other 90 % are going to be discouraged... hopefully no dip in PS qualtiy. Jeez... thing have just not been going well for my dear sony lately. I hope the future is more optimistic.

GRRrrRRrrRRrr

Look, the guy that posted above me has done this once that I've seen and possibly more. Stop trying to drum up business here dude. this is a PSP forum, not a get rich quick scheme forum. Your not even posting on topic responces, So STFU! So SONY drops the price of the PSP and everybody acts like lay-off's where not seen coming? The PS3 costs way to much as it is and they make no attempt to drop it's price which is why they are falling in market profits because their consol costs to much to begin with. $600 USD is just way to much to charge for a system to begin with, no wonder they seeing profit drops, they need to get their head out of their collective asses and drop the price of the PS3 as well before they will see a profit spike. Look, they dropped the price of the PSP finnaly and what did they see... profits rised! But they didn't go far enough. If the price of the PS3 was dropped as well, this would probably still be an issue but less of one. Lay-off's where inevitable, like the ass hole above me posting off topic get rich schemes in a PSP forum where they don't belong. Just my 2 cents.

They can't...

cut the PS3's price...they are already losing enough money as it is. Plus, for what you're getting, the PS3 is actually a steal deal. Free internet play in itself completely makes the x360 seem worthless. If you like playing online all of the time, the x360 is going to cost you hundreds if not thousands more than the PS3 over time...so if anything, Microsoft...one of the richest companies in the world should follow suit with Sony and let people play their games for free!

You just got one thing wrong.

We're Europe. It's closer to the equivelant of 800 USD for us. 850 in the UK with the current exchange rate.

Very discouraging news

I am guessing this is because the company has heard several rumors of employees not working enough to justify their paycheck. Hopefully this does not mean a loss in employees in the areas that affect consumers so much as it affects advertising. Since this is just a rumor at this point I suppose we will find out more soon, I just hope this means SCEE can come out of such a shaky situation with more benefits for PSP gamers.

This isnt that shocking anyway. Companies hire people when the demand requires it. But when a company starts to go steady, theres not a demand for more people and you have people who arent doing as much. Microsoft cut people years ago and Boeing did the same thing. Its a natural solution in big business. It seems like alot but 160 people out of the millions in Europe isnt that much at all.

?

Hardly thousands but it could easily run into the hundreds mark. I'd say that SONY is making very little loss on the PS3 in the UK if at all.

For those of you who say that Sony does nothing to lower it's prices, you should realize that what determines the cost of their products is actually how much Sony has to pay to make them. Sony hires other companies to manufacture their systems, and if the parts are expensive, than it will cost sony a lot to produce the thousands they need. At release time, sony was losing just under $150 per PS3 that they made. They hoped they could make it up with game sales. Which is one reason the price of games has jumped up. With technical innovation comes lower manufacturing costs, and in turn lower prices for us, the people that buy all their stuff. So, take into consideration that the PS3 is using hardware that is completely brand new, first of it's kind. The Blu-Ray drive is just one piece. So of course the costs will be high for Sony to make so many of them, since they can't rely on old technology to produce their system. Now look at the Xbox360, there was not much 'new' technology as far as it's hardware went. For example a DVD-Drive is cheaper to make than a Blu-Ray drive. So Microsoft was able to produce it at a lower cost, and in turn sell it to you at a lower cost. Before I go on about this forever, lemme just say that Sony will lower its prices when it costs them less to make a PSP and a PS3. Until then, all you can do is wait. Oh and with all this in mind, it's still ok to picture Sony or Microsoft as nothing but greedy companies, just hope you consider this information.

i think..

it was about *****ing time... hope this helps make things tighter for the big S

Hmmm...

Supreme3x makes some great points about hardware costs and the cutting edge of the beast compared to MicroS. X360. While I do believe that $600. USD even 850 for UK is alot to shell out for a system, I do believe that we are still getting quite the deal considering that a great video card alone will set you back at lest $400. to $600. USD. I could care less about Sonys BlueRay reader, it's not a writer and shouldn't be as high priced as it is but understands the need for the reader considering the media it reads. Games writen to higher storage media alows for better graphics and gameplay due to not having to cut a game down to size due to lack of media realestate.
