Joint Venture to offer UK and Ireland PSP video download service |
Ó
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe or SCEE, together with UK's multichannel multiplatform television service operator Sky, announced today the creation of a new company named Joint Venture. So what now? Well, the new company will be providing PSP owners in UK and Ireland on-demand entertainment content. That means that Sony is now officially providing its user base with a video on demand (VOD) download service for the PlayStation Portable.
Anyway, SCEE and Sky mentioned that they both have equal board level representation in Joint Venture. Furthermore, it was also said that the service will be exclusive to Sony's handheld console.
More interestingly, Joint Venture announced as well that it is considering to provide a similar service across Europe in the future, but as of now, it would like to focus on UK's and Ireland's consumer base which amounts to 2.3 million users when combined.
SCEE, finally, added that more will be revealed during this year's Game Convention in Germany.

Yes i live in the uk. whehey
After being charged $100 for games, and $900 for a console (yes, thats US dollars, and for the PS3 but you get the idea), we finally have something to look forward to for ourselves, although no doubt partnerships will spring up in all territories.
I find this exciting beyond the PSP scene though. If this pans out, Sony have an incredibly powerful allie on their hands when it comes to media delivery. For those unaware, Sky is the dominant multiformat platform in the UK - together with their Sky Movies publishing rights, as well as all the contracts they have with the major players (BBC, MTV, Discovery, Disney... any multinational channel you care to mention), this *could* be the next gen decider in the UK, at least as far as media availability for platforms is concerned.
Please Sony. Don't screw this up.
Interesting. But will it be any good?
