Jeanne D'Arc - Image 1Would any of you European gamers out there know anything about this? Apparently, word has it that Level-5's tactical RPG for the PSP, Jeanne D'Arc, never made it to its UK release. Originally, it was supposed to head to UK, but quietly, it never went that way.

Curiosity just popped up since Level 5's White Knight Story is one of the hotly-anticipated titles this year. Plus this discovery brings to light the fact that opting out of territory launches means a loss of opportunity to further promote the handheld. I mean, come on. See any new good softwares around for the PSP?

There will be another Level-5 game in the works coming to the PSP, though, Ushiro. Hopefully this one will get to dock in UK.

» World wide release

In today's economy, there really is no reason why games shouldn't be released in as many countries as possible. Game developers could cut the costs of localization of an existing game and redistribution by just making it in as many languages as possible from the beginning. The PSP is a handheld system, so NTSC vs PAL isn't a factor. Make the games in Multi-5 like in Europe or Multi-7 (adding Chinese and Japanese) and have a worldwide release.

In a perfect world that would be awesome, but in reality it wont happen. Most of the time Japanese devs do not work side by side with a translation team. Japan isn't very diverse, so their main priority is Japanese sales.

If the game is good and sells well, then they might decide to spend money on a foreign translation team. You have to remember that video games are high risk and the longer you spend making one, the more money you lose.

» Yeah...

I've been lamenting the loss of this title since it came out - in the end I just imported it, but there's a lot of titles that don't make it to us over here. It's a real kick in the teeth, especially considering how good the game is. Other titles, like Disgaea, are severely limited runs. The PSP in this country just doesn't get a lot of support. I'd say half my collection is imports - that's about 15 titles.

Still, no VAT on any of those, so at least I get to stick it to our unelected dictator Brown.

» dubs

Well you forgot Korean, but who gives? It won't happen.

As a european I'm not waiting for some train simulator or some dating simulator games.. also beat games (dance dance revolution, dj max) doesn't tickle me... I admit it I suck at it, it's annoying.

And just adding some language pack doesn't satisfy all gamers.. there are lots of gamers that hates the moonspeak. The game needs to be dubbed.

While the game is being dubbed (english) it might lose the original dub (japanese) as in metal gear solid 4. Because the lack of space (memory)

Then you have the purist gamers or gamer with alot of curiosity that doesn't know japanese, they want the game with the japanese dub and english subs.

And think about it, not every game is dubbed as in Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid.

What you get is *****ty dubbed games without the original dub and that is something I don't wanna see

» reason why it's not in the UK

the reason why this was not released in the UK is because of historical reasons. the main character, Jeanne, is based on the historical figure Joan of Arc. Joan of Arc was a female commander who won several battles against the UK. She was executed by the British because she was "evil". Of course, a game that makes her look like a hero might have some political implications.

Man, i feel like such a nerd

» "about this": OmGZ CoNSPirAcy!

Dude, do you run the company? Do you know all the intricacies of foreign distribution? Do you know the break-even point? Did you do the math on the sales figures for PSPs? Do you know the cost of advertising? Do you think they purposefully did something that cost them a lot of potential profit?

Maybe they just didn't have enough money to follow through to the point where they knew there would be profit. Sheez. Import it already.

» Of course

Of course, you're right... and that's why the movie "The Messenger" was never released in the UK.

Oh wait, it was.

Please don't make stuff up.

Pretty sure that censorship like that wouldn't go unnotied. Especially since everyone I know here in the UK don't give a flying rats s*** about ancient conflicts.

» meh

well, i just thought it might be a possibility.

ah well, either ways, it was just a guess. It's not like I've actually asked people in the UK about this. like ultimax said, most people probably don't give a s*** about ancient conflicts.
