Folks in Japan were promised a beta version of the Ad-Hoc Party service to go live come October 30, however, things up at Sony aren't running as smooth as they expected.

The official PlayStation Japan website has announced that the beta launch has been delayed to some time in early November instead. Effectively, that means the first week of November, or if you want to stretch it, maybe even the second week.

The PSP-to-PS3 network service is currently supported only by Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, and will eventually be introduced to Phantasy Star Portable. If you're still in the dark on how this service runs, here's a quick video presentation from the PlayStation site explaining how the Ad-Hoc Party runs:

» Why is this game specific?

I don't understand why this new feature is game specific and will not be available to all psp games. I understood why the ingame music is (the devs have to code in the abitlity to turn off the default game soundtrack). And I understand why the image capture is (the devs have to code in the ability to capture the image that's behind the game's pause screen). But I can't think of a reason why this should require dev interaction. The ad-hoc communication method for psp's are the same from game to game, so why can Sony just code it for the ps3 to accept the signal and transmit it to another ps3 online? If this becomes a matter of the devs enabling this feature then all the games that I currently have and would like to play multiplayer online will never get it. The devs aren't going to spend time and money to patch a game that's long gone its prime and won't make them any money. An we'll probably only see it in future releases of games that are considered "big" and not in all games.

» this sux.

ad hoc is only fun if you are NEAR friends, so you can laugh/comment, etc.

If you and your friend are in two different locations its pretty much the same as playing online...

» Nah I disagree

I have Xlink and me and my girl have been playin PSP games like Untold legends which is Ad hoc only at a long distance since she's in another state right now this'll still be great when she moves down here she'll still be over an hour away but this'll make it easier plyus as you can see the headsets make it possible to chat and what not so your theory is kinda broken anyway look at the vid again

The green is very ugly though dont like that ***** doesnt fit Ps3s Scheme ya know

» Huh?

I'd have to agree with StingBlah on this one, Xis. This is one helluva complicated way of doing Ad Hoc between 2 PSP's. I mean, if you have to have 2 PS3's to begin with, why not play online with PS3 games, instead?

Maybe I can see this being popular with kids still living at home, whose parents are ok with the idea of essentially running the family room PS3 in 'idle' mode while they watch TV, and the kids play remotely on PSP with friends.

But, outside of someone like Xis and a very special situation, I can't see much where anyone over the age of 20 is going to salivate over the feature. I have long been right with Sony on the new features they bring, thinking them correct on their prioritization of development resources. .....Which is why this one is a mystery to me.

Wow, I didn't even know Sony was working on something like this! That would be so awesome to have if it saw a full release with support for all titles, and not just the ones that support "Ad-Hoc Party". It wold kinda be like an official release of Xlink Kai.

» well...

well idealy ad hoc party allows you and your freind to play on your favorite psp game whenever.

Games like monster hunter require alot of time and effort, even if theres four of you. imagine you got an hour or so free before you go to work or what have you, and you want to finish a quest with a freind. you probably dont have the time to go meet up with him and play. so you can just switch this on and away you go.

of course this would never beat the fun of being with them in person, but its just an alternative if you live far away from a freind or what have you.

this may also be easier for devs to add support to this over coding infrastructure for psp games, but then that would defeat the purpose of taken ur psp to some random wifi spot and playing online...

» RE: Why is this game specific?

Sony and its partners do have to set up the lobby configuration for each game that uses AdHoc Party, same as Xlink does. Outside of that, though, I do not understand at all why this thing isn't shipping with dozens if not the whole catalog of PSP games. It's really not that hard to register and once the LAN tunnel is established, it really should not matter what game is being played, to the end user it's a standard interface and to the game it's just LAN communication being routed over the internet instead of local.

» Yea....

I guess I can agree with what you other guys are sayin good point generally your right I DEF agree with Dontcry because multi player games just should be infastructer and Ad hoc I'm pretty sure this is not going to be title Specific (if so thats FKN stupid for said reason above, credit to who ever said it) So finally I can get in some Power Stone online (wanted this on PSN sooo bad!) plus I think you might be able to contact people through ad hoc party and kinda have your friends list with your PSP in some way doing this.

Bottom line Intergrated Friend list and almost every game infastructure would end this entire Idea unless Sony has something else up there sleeve....
