Japanese VOD service P-TV coming to an end - Image 1Japan's Video on Demand (VOD) service P-TV for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable is about to come to an end, said the statement found on the company's official site. The reason for stopping the service wasn't mentioned but it's probably from lacking enough subscribers.

The service began around July 2005 and it allowed content from the official P-TV site to be playable on the PSP through wireless LAN connection. The VOD service, furthermore, allows PSP owners to purchase copyright-protected videos for their handhelds. When the PS3 was launched, P-TV included the new console to the service.

But Sony isn't giving up on VOD service. In a related news, it should be remembered that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) recently announced a similar service for UK in cooperation with multichannel multiplatform television service operator Sky. The rest of the service will launched for whole Europe later on.

P-TV said that the service will stay live only until 5 p.m. on August 30. Oh well, too bad it's all over. We heard they are offering downloads for pin-up idols.

awww

That sucks. I was hoping it would come to the States, but it's okay I guess. It must've been pretty cool to be able to download videos on demand, but I suppose it wasn't profiting much. Well, we still have PimpStreamer. YES! If only I can find some good RSS feeds with new and cool videos...

this news is everywhere...

but.. is the uk service the freeview thing or is really a digital turner? because if I can connect my cabletv and let it work like a TIVO it will be the best thing that the PS3 can do for multimedia... forget the VOD service... this will be the next big thing with tranfer to the PSP to watch it on the go... SONY need to focus more in US and UK.... japan and any asian are freaks in videogames but the big numbers are in US and UK...

mhm

indeed actually, ptv is included on the xmb if you have a JAP psp, (or in my case, your flash1 becomes corrupt and when u reset your settings it THINKS its a jap psp) funny thing was, almost all the channels were softcore porn, with a little obscure anime in the mix, the top ten was always porn tho.
