New Super Mario Bros. did astronomical numbers. In one week, it has sold more than Super Mario Sunshine did in total in Japan. Obviously Nintendo's strategy of luring in non-gamers with the Brain Training games has worked. Now they're buying "real" games too! New Super Mario Bros. is the first traditional 2D sidescrolling Mario game since Super Mario World for the SNES 15 years ago. Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable is a board game featuring characters from the universes of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

The DS Lite has reached even higher numbers this week, likely due to New Super Mario Bros. The DS is basically confirming earlier reports that it's not being produced any more. The PSP saw a sales increase as well, maybe owing to the debut of a game combining the two most popular franchises in Japan - Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. The other handhelds, the three designs of the Game Boy Advance, stayed basically the same. Actually, they should do that for the NGage over here... I'd buy one.

The PS2 is still selling pretty well in Japan. You'd think everybody would have one by now! The Xbox 360 and GameCube look like they're in a struggle against each other while the Xbox has given up all hope. Yay to the eight people who bought one this week in Japan! They should take a picture of each person who does and give them a medal or something!

weird

exactly, how dont these people already have ps2's?? i really dont get why the japanese hate the 360 so much... maybe if it had more flashing colors and little anime monsters itd be more attractive

why people still buy PS2s

its because existing PS2's break so often, they go to get replacements, and replacements count as sales.

weird people

I mean those japanese people are weird. Come on, those brain training games are both on 2nd and 3rd place, and then there is the english training one in 8th place. Dont get me wrong, I have a ds and love it, but seriously those are the worst games I have ever seen. Seems to me like they are seriously boring.

Thats so funny!!

I think people generally relate more to a company that produces consoles from there home land!?! I don't think microsoft is yet quite as synonymous for gaming in Japan.

Fangle holed warrior

I love the japanese there choice of games is brilliant!!! I wish we the west were not as predictable as the rest of the world!!! Maybe the west needs to wake up a bit!! Why not try these games you may like mr mr aye!! directed at 4 and 2. Plus it's not just the anime stuff or robots there is a bit more to it than that!! Don't be small minded it is what starts wars

Actually I disagree, the west is more open to gaming than Japan is in terms of wider game styles

Japanese gamers are more traditional and buy mostly the same genres over and over. They are not as wide spread in gaming domain as us. The beauty about the west is that, believe it or not, we don't discriminate. The training series is doing well even in the US. RPGs are now at the top of the ranks (Kingdom Hearts 2). We accept and adapt very quickly. Japan however is not. American games (FPS, MMORPGs, etc..) don't make a dent. Customs and tradition is embedded in their culture. Ever wonder the 20th version of Mario is still selling stupidly well? They could have released the exact same Mario and it would have sold the same. Japan hints at innovation but there actually isn't much innovation on the East. They push technology but the free spirit west are the more constant innovators (not comparing Wii, just in general). Is a cultural difference. Capcom has even gone as far as to declare the Japanese market a stale market. They believe most Japanese developers will soon wither away if Japan's traditional thinking persist as the west becomes the dominant market of gaming.

bah humbuggery

bah say what you like No 9 but its just tit for tat you say that i say this......... i don't believe we are "free spirits" in the west ?!?! where do you live freedoms ville? I can understand why they don't buy into the war hungry first person shooters like we do! But hey i can't speak for everyone and lets be careful not to generalise too much. I like first person shooters but i still have a slight moral problem with acting out a real situation from a war and having fun shooting/blowing people up as i think we all should ! Which just encase you had not noticed is pretty damn popular in this part of the world! Please don't get me wrong I understand what your saying and agree with the stale part and the bit about repetition but i don't see the west knocking out a wii plus name me some truely innovative (check definition) games that are not based around titles from the days of yore........ no please do I'm not trying to be belligerent........and also please, please don't include me in the free spirit bit!! ;-)

It's Microsoft's fault 360 is doing so poor in Japan

Japanese hate 360 because it obviously has no games that Japanese really like. If Microsoft actually put some worthwhile games for the Japanese, maybe it'd might sell better, instead of forcing games they don't like up their asses.
