The sales this week in Japan weren't anything special. Only one new release broke the top ten. Hardware sales are at a very low point although the DS Lite doesn't seem to be affected by it at all.

Hack GU01. PS2 hack//G.U. Vol. 1 - 90,946 [NEW]
02. NDS Brain Training 2 - 61,679 [~2,281,000]
03. NDS Tetris DS - 50,937 [~499,000]
04. NDS Brain Training - 45,196 [~2,220,000)
05. PS2 Winning Eleven 10 - 44,530 [~657,000]
06. NDS Animal Crossing: Wild World - 33,470 [~2,709,000]
07. PS2 Powerful Major League - 33,278 [~123,000]
08. NDS English Training - 29,250 [~1,055,000]
09. NDS Pokemon Ranger - 17,935 [~532,000]
10. NDS Mario Kart DS - 16,119 [~1,383,000]

DS Lite - 160,182 [1,635,468]
PSP - 24,457 [3,455,419]
PS2 20,633 [22,340,772]
NDS - 16,867 [6,522,825]
GBASP 6,174 [15,637,141]
GBM 2,245 [505,811]
Xbox360 1,403 [119,168]
GC 1,051 [4,103,089]
GBA 25 [??]
Xbox 20 [474,525]

Every console except the DS Lite, Nintendo DS, and Xbox 360 (48 consoles more!) sold less this week than last week's already low numbers. The DS numbers have been getting a bit erratic as of late. It looks like the cause of that is supply issues. Finding the console is proving to be almost impossible. What Nintendo will do when they launch in other countries next month will be interesting.

Also, the Nintendo DS has now sold (not shipped) over 8 million units in Japan alone. This took the console just under 18 months making it the fastest selling console in Japanese history. The DS and DS Lite combined are now at 8,158,293 while its competitor, the PSP, is at 3,455,419. Both handhelds launched in December 2004.

I dont see why ppl like the DS so much... The games arent THAT great, i mean they are good, but not amazing. Like all games, they get boring after a while and the PSP has all of these other media thingys...sooooo...what's the big deal? I guess it's cuz the DS is more accesible to women and children, with all it's Mario family games and such... I gotta say though...that DS lite is lookin preeeeeetty sweet....

to post #5

games arent that great? have you even played a DS yet along with a GOOD game? & those media extras that the PSP comes with are f*cking useless garbage anyway.

I hate your parents

@skriblz: Stop playing video games now.

DS

The DS just has the games, pure and simple. It's selling to both non-gamers and gamers. The Brain Training games are a hit with older games in Japan. Surveys show that way more people over 35 play DS over PSP. Alongside that, there's the huge hits coming out for the DS. Square Enix is supporting the DS more than the PSP and Nintendo's first party hits keep coming. The games just keep flowing out.

(Imagine this spoken by the Micro Machines guy)

Final Fantasy III, a new Mana game (dare I hope for coop? I dare!), a couple of Atlus RPGs, and Rocket Slime all look pretty good to me. I like LostMagic, Tetris, and Electroplankton right now though. On the other hand, ya gotta love Valkyrie Profile for PSP - I ordered that one for obscene amounts of money off of half.com a year ago - and I have to say that I like Field Commander a bit more than Advance Wars DS, mainly because of the promise of online play. Good games on both sides... everyone wins.

Whoops

I meant that I ordered Valkyrie Profile for PS1 a year ago.
by - 2006-05-25 22:48:30
erm

since this has already fallen to a DS vs PSP conversation ill just say the day a game i REALLY want is announced for the psp is the day i buy one. Whats weird is the psp has the ability to smash the psp. The fact that the psp has been out over a year and still only has 1 game(gta) that is truly a good game, at that the psp gta is really not that great. Sony really needs to put more focus into getting people interested in deving for the psp.

Children of Mana has co-op for up to four players. That was confirmed a long time ago =P

I've been avoiding reading the previews because I don't want the story ruined for me! ;)

About the DS and PSP

skriblz, one thing to clear up. The Japanese and US game market is totally different (I'm in Japan right now and I've seen them both first hand). Games that do well in the states (realistic sports (except Soccer), FPSs) usually don't do well in Japan, whereas games that do well in Japan (RPGs (that aren't Final Fantasy), Dating Sims, etc) don't do very well in the states The DS really is appealing to all age groups here in Japan. The already mentioned Brain Training games are doing well over here. Also, unlike in the states, the Japanese have accepted the DS as the successor to the GBA (even if Nintendo says otherwise). I have both a PSP (2 actually) and a DS Lite, and I enjoy them both equally (however, I play more emulators on my PSP then I do PSP software).

I need a break

Whoa, skriblz didn't do anything that even I thought was flaming the DS. He thought there weren't any great games, there were GOOD games but nothing great. He also mentionedd the PSP having at least other media stuff. Which by logic means it doesn't have any great games either. That he gets bored with them, both systems to be exact. I don't think he was dissing the DS as much as he was just surprised. I just figure I'd throw in some support for him cause I didn't see his post bothersome. His comment on mothers and such, yea...could have been phrased better. But that is Nintendo's strategy, everyone, specifically the non gamer. It's working in Japan and it might work in the states. Second, he gave props to the DS Lite. Which I can't friggin wait to get, I wish it had came out earlier over state side. I've owned 2 psps (bought one for my kid bro) and I plan to give him my DS since he wants one so bad and I get myself a brand new sexy Lite.

GU

Yay for .hack//GU.

notitle

I think DS is selling that well because is "different" from what we've seen before, along with PSP poor game line up (yup, 1 year has passed and still no "must buy" game), every game is just so-so... and i think the only good game on the horizon is Crisis Core vs plenty of good ones on the DS (mostly RPG, if they do Golden Sun for the DS then the PSP will be over jojojo) Don't get me wrong, i have a PSP but not a DS (I wish i had one, not because of nintencrapdogs and ***** like that, but because the good RPG's)
by - 2006-05-26 03:46:19
Wow

Is this a first? No PSP games in the top ten?
by - 2006-05-26 08:23:48

Both handhelds are ***** and have stupidass games. And how are those .hack games becoming so successful? They drag on and are boring as *****.

Theres probably lots of lists with no PSP Games in the top 10. It's usually PS2 or DS games.

Ok

I'm sick of all the BS fanboys claiming that the PSP has no good games. There are plenty of good games. Games like Daxter, Syphon Filter, Burnout, Hot Shots Golf, GTA, Wipeout, Ridge Racer, MGA 1, MGA 2, Kingdom of Paradise, Socom, and many more are good quality games. I just don't get how these BS fanboys simply ignore these games. However, any BS game is automatically a killer app. That just doesn't make sense. BS fanboys only enjoy Nintendo games. Any other games are automatically ignored, even if they sell well and are rated well. These BS fanboys are just little childred; that's why they don't have a well developed logical understanding. Almost everything they say is bull, just like the overrated BS. It's true that the Japanese love the BS, because it has games that are NOT EVEN GAMES: Brain Training. The Japanese have different taste. These non-Japanese BS fanboys act like the Japanese are gods and that their tastes are what is "TRUE", since it supports their BS. However, they don't realise that the world is a much bigger place than the small island of Japan. You BS freaks need go experience the world and start opening up your minds, because not everyone is Japanese.

PSP has no good games

Irony

#22, Calling those who dislike your system "fanboys" then creating childish words like "BS", "GayCube", "LameStation", or "SuXBox" aren't the greatest way to get your point across. You should have stopped while you were ahead.
by - 2006-05-26 20:04:48
To the retarded number 24.

The Nintendo DS fanboys deserve to be called BS. That's what they are; everything they do, which is very unlogical, is BS. They totally deserve that name and so do you. The PSP is not getting the respect that it deserves. There are plenty of quality games on it. Just because the quality games don't start with the title Mario and other Nintendo franchises, that does not mean that the PSP does not have quality names. The BS fan fa-gs always rant on the PSP for not having quality titles, because it doesn't have Nintendo franchises. The BS fan-*****s are always wishing for more 3rd-party support, but they never ever buy 3rd-party games, despite the quality of many of the titles that they create. If you look at what really sells on a Nintendo platform, it will be Nintendo franchises. BS fan-*****s are so hypocritical; it's total bull*****! I win, once again!

ds has better games

any of you fools ever played castlevania for DS? Look at e3, DS mopped the floor with psp in terms of upcoming game software. I dont see why people like bashing the ds when it is clearly the winner.

Re: Sad PSP Fanboy

Of your list, I only find Grand Theft Auto interesting. I can get GTA: LCS for my PS2 in about a month so there's no point in spending $300 for a PSP. I'm not into racing, shooting or sports games and MGA being a card game really puts me off. The DS on the other hand has a variety of games I enjoy like Mario Kart, Jump Superstars, Advance Wars, Sonic Rush, Phoneix Wright. Upcoming games like Final Fantasy III, Children of Mana, Tales of the Tempest prove that this will be the system for RPGs - a genre I enjoy more than the generic FPS and racing game.

Re: #28

Many people like to know what's going on in the world outside just their country. I'm one of them. It's interesting to know what's going on in the United States and Japan, not just Canada. The PSP and DS sites are some of our most popular, and since Japan is the largest handheld market in the world (bigger than the US and Europe), it seems logical to post theirs. Also, I'd love to post US numbers weekly but they aren't released weekly. They're released monthly. If you want to know what the best selling games were according to Best Buy last week. They were: 1. New Super Mario Bros. (NDS) 2. Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (NDS) 3. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360) 4. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (360) 5. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Collector's Edition (360) 6. Madden NFL 06 (360) 7. Kingdom Hearts II (PS2) 8. Madden NFL 06 (PS2) 9. Genji: Dawn of the Samurai (PS2) 10. Call of Duty 2 (360) So yes, the DS made it. But you're right that the PSP didn't. I am surprised by Genji though >_> That Sony press conference must have done wonders XD
