DS ShortagesThe weekly Japan sales numbers for hardware are in with the great sales-tracking of Media-Create. The Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DS are selling tons of units as always. They are being bought back by retailers for close to the MSRP and then sold for almost double! The more interesting battles are really heating up as well! The Gamecube outsold the Xbox 360  by only 43 units while the Xbox has actually inched ahead of the GBA by 19 units! All kidding aside, the week is pretty normal with nothing big to note. For those wondering about how important Japan sales are to companies, I'll tell you right now. The Japan handheld market is currently larger than the North American and European ones but the home console market is not.

Nintendo DS Lite - 119,986
Nintendo DS - 39,307
PS2 - 34,169
PSP - 31,077
GBA SP - 5,627
Game Boy Micro - 4,883
Gamecube - 1,458
Xbox 360 - 1,415
Xbox - 117
Game Boy Advance - 98

» PS2 count

im at a total of 3.

I think the high sales are due to people having to rebuy the console since the hardware is made of Saltine Crackers.

(i know 3 people who have bought 4 PS2's)

(I know 5 People (including myself) that have bought 3 PS2's)

(I know 12 People who have bought 2 PS2's)

(I know 2 people who have only bought 1 PS2)

(I know 1 person who has boughten 3 PS2's but claims that he has only ever boughten one. it was hilarious, he was trying to say that the console was well built and that he never had to replace the system. i butted in with "dude you had to but 2 more because the previous 2 broke)

(of the people i know, those who are NOT having DRE errors on their current PS2: 1 person, and its one of the guys who has only ever boughten 1 PS2)

(People who have gotten Sony to fix their PS2 for free: 0 people.)

» PSP...not so hot.

The PSP is being beaten to death by the DS Lite. Its last chance to take a firm hold on part of the Japanese market is some high-profile RPGs. While those are coming, it will be interesting to see just how much of an impact they will have.

» The real reason.

You may not be able to tell from pictures, but everything in Japan is scaled to the people. Japanese people are literally no more than 3 feet tall, max. The DS Lite is just easier for them to carry, while the PSP is like trying to tote around a small plasma television. I'm sure we could all agree that this is not acceptable for tiny Japanese people.

» mmmm

I wonder if psp is enjoying the the beating.. with a side of PWN. only to wash it all down with a cup of humiliation.. mmmmmmmmm

Japan is no longer a society of poverty and malnourishment. I trust you've never been here because if you look around you would see theres plenty of people 6 feet+ and the average height is no different from what I've seen living in California.

» japanese?....6 foot?

that is hard to believe...

I've also read japanese girls are starting to get more fat in their diet and the aveage breast size is increasing....

i hope they turn into the fatasses that are known to be in the states and britian....

» yup

The Japanese have in fact overtaken the U.S. when it comes to average height, so there.

Also, when it comes to portable devices, the Japanese have always loved their Nintendos, and all those Gameboy owners naturally buy another Nintendo device. Coupled with accessibility and low price, it really is a no-brainer for many. What is so surprising in Japan, is that the PSP does so well regardless, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is largely due to people buying both.

While I personally am a huge PSP fan, I think that the sales would have looked the same in Europe and Japan if portable gaming were as big as it is in Japan, where actually more girls game than guys (hence, partly, all the soap-style games, which we don't have here at all - the Sims comes closest), and where console and portable are as common as vacuum cleaners and brooms.
