Five Million Japanese Served, and counting - Image 1

It still trails behind the DS, but don't say that the PSP's dead. IGN notes a Nikkei Keizan Shimbun report that says that PSP has sold over five million units in Japan!

According to the newspaper, PSP sales hit that mark in February, and it shows signs of steady growth. In fact, there's additional software development going on, and if you've noticed some of the things we've mentioned on the site, it's still poised to keep on growing. Sure, we can't figure out if that PSP2 is actually shipping out or not, but it's good news like this that makes a PSP fan happy at the end of the day.

One last tidbit, by the way. At the end of the article, Sony got quoted, saying that the system's adoption rate is "the same as that of the original PlayStation, which shipped one hundred million units." Does that mean they expect it to sell as much as the PS1 eventually? Well, first things first, let's aim for ten million Japanese gamers served.

well for once I guess sony is right, " the system's adoption rate is "the same as that of the original PlayStation, which shipped one hundred million units" but the one hundred million units is worldwide, if you just focus on japan then the adoption rate (hardware sold) of psp is almost the same as playstation: (check week 118)

Yeah like the PSP is in the same position as the console. The console had the price point and had the continuing amount of games for it. PSP doesn't have the price point nor the abundance of games, but hey at leasts they can throw some stats around.

So would DS be a failure if the Ngage sold 100million units in Japan?

No.

Success is not driven by being the company that sells the most consoles. These boards are too often filled with prepubescent little trolls that can't think for themselves. Success is in $$$$$. Ok, Nintendo has had MORE success. This does not impact the fact that PSP IS A SUCCESS. With the games coming out it is far from dead.

Think about it this way. Two guys go fishing lets call them Sony and Nintendo. Nintendo catches 20 fish, Sony catches 5. Did anyone starve? Nope. Will either one not go fishing tomorrow because they had poor results? Nope.

Hence Sony is now in the portable market and will remain there for the time being.

PSP has put up a respectable competition in a Nintendo dominated handheld market. Give credit where it's due. If Sony can rectify minor issues with the handheld or reduce the price, it can surely compete better with DS. There's no shortage of quality games for PSP. All that "port" talk is so 2005!

by Strangler - 2007-03-15 08:44
» re

this is where the 'shipments' vs. 'sales' thing comes back to bite Sony in the butt! They are constantly touting shipments in order to inflate their numbers while others cite sales (e.g. Monster Hunter 2 *still* hasn't SOLD 1 million copies). They sold hundreds of thousands of PSP's based on numbers you and I have seen ad nauseum. But they only *shipped* 10,000 because the stocks were so over-full that nobody needed more.

And that lack of shipments is directly related to the PSP being unable to meet sales expectations. (that is how a forecast model works).

- The PSP has the lowest attach rate of any current system (can't find numbers now)

- All retailers managed to do for the last quarter of the year was clear existing inventory

The PSP might be doing 'ok', but those facts don't send much of a positive message about why retailers would like to give the PSP shelf space.

Look at a place like Walmart - they give the same space to the GBA, DS and PSP. Initially they gave the GBA & DS combined space, then crimped the GBA, then expanded them to take over the GameCube ... but now with the Wii, XBOX360, PS3 all out, and the PS2 still the hottest thing going, and with sales of XBOX and GameCube games still doing OK, shelf space is tough.

Oh, and some 'attach rate' numbers:

- For 2006, in the US the PSP had 1 game in the Top 50 sales, GTA:LCS @ #37 (690k). The DS had 8, the XBOX had 2 and the Cube & GBA also had 1 each.

- For 2006 in Japan the PSP had 2 games in the top 50 that combined for 800k units, whereas the DS had 25, 8 of which sold more than 1 million (2 more than 4 mil).

- So far in 2007 in the US, the PSP has 2 games in the top 50, whereas the DS has 12.

- So far in 2007 in Japan, the PSP has 5 games in the top 50 including the #1 Monster Hunter 2, whereas the DS has 29.

Like it or not, we heard one user mention this situation a number of times. Looks like he was entirely correct.

K-Mart (already dropped products)

Wal-Mart (reducing PSP section)

Toys R Us (reducing PSP sections)

Target (severely limiting orders of new PSP products, dumping many PSP related items)

Kay Bee Toys (doesn't carry PSP)

Sears (Owned by K-mart, also dumping PSP products)

» ooo sweet.

Okay anyway, all I care about is that I enjoy PSP over DS. The DS is just not my thing, I don't find it creative or innovative, I just want to play great games with great graphics, which the DS to me does not have. Do you really expect to come to this site and everyone say, "Omg DS has sold 15 million the PSP sux!" Or "The PSP only had one game in the top 50 while the DS had 8!" I bet you I would much rather play Grand Theft Auto, then any of those top 8 games for the DS. You do not effect anyone's opinion by stating that, just like how I don't effect yours by stating this. I don't care about 2 screens and a pen that can catch pokemon or fling Mario's in the air or whatever. Strangler you've been coming here for a while now trying to make the same point, over and over about the DS and PSP. But really man, just let it go. Let it go. Nobody cares about your "DS lawls 15 million hax," people want PSP updates because that's what they're here for, you're just a tool trying to express how much better the DS is than the PSP, when fans just don't see it that way at all, pack it up, take it elsewhere.

by FAn - 2007-03-15 11:28
» yah right

the psp an underdog? yeah okay, the psp came into the market as an "underdog"... bs. The ds/dslite was the underdog. Also the psp getting the "market" doesn't mean much in the fact that the market has been expanding. Also the playstation 1 shipped how many units.... and its dead now? I don't see how it hitting 5 million units makes it not dead, it needs some games.

by mohaas05 - 2007-03-15 12:29

then xbox would be a failure since microsoft lost like several million off of it

I am sorry sir but your comment of the ds being the underdog is untrue, Nintendo is the leader in the handheld market so therefore anyone who opposes them is the underdog. it would be like saying that the ps3 is the underdog, lol

» YOU are STUPID

The real reason why the ds sells more, is because it is a kiddy system, makes it easy for nintendo. I mean all they have to do is slap a game with some music, some little catchy graphics, and kids are bound to play it. Most of the time I see parents buy ds games and the little kid is looking up at me, that is 95 percent of ds gamers. I mean if I was a kid I pretty sure my parents would buy the ds lite, they do not know better. Now when a parent is buying a psp for a kid, he isnt 5 years old, I never see a teen with a mom buying him a ds, it is always the psp. Kids dont have expectations at all, or basically they suck at games, and would not be able to play psp games, that is why the ds sells better, because it is for more stupid people (I own one myself, most games are just for lamebrains). I can play Command and Conquer on the psp, which is a good game, somethign the ds lite can not touch. And the k-mart dropping it, WELL DUH who goes there for games? The reality is nintendo just makes there games easy, while Sony makes solid games that kids are not smart enough to play, which I guess is a bad thing for sony, but good for REAL gamers. I dont care about ds fanboys, I am playing Silent Hill, soon to be playing Super Mario 64 on my psp!

And one more,

parents buy ds lite to kids because the ds is actually cheaper in price.

me and my family already bought almost 10 units of psp here in japan. me and my cousins has psp's. but only two of us have DS.

and those persons stating psp has less sales in USA are wrong. the great analyst Michael Pachter can prove them wrong, he has data evidences.

no matter what, the psp is a cool next gen handheld, just keep the wuality games coming, specially in the RPG section.

by kramerz - 2007-03-16 00:33

bet if psp same price compare ds, parents would hv bought psp form their kids. ds can never compare with psp coz they r very diff technology. psp still my best console. ds graphic sucks.

» About PSP2...

Should we really call it PSP2? Just because its been redesigned doesnt mean its “2” worthy y'know. They remade PS2, why didnt they call it “PS3”. Really its just a waste to buy a redesigned PSP with no internal difference (besides a hard drive, which is what only 8 gigs worth?). Just save your hard earned money for the “real” PSP2 coming sometime in 09 or in 2010 which is my guess. The PSP is doing just fine!
