Japan: PSP sells nearly as much as all other consoles combined |
Ó

It's been a while since the PSP had since this kind of ginormous success in Japan. For the week ending on March 30, the Sony handheld sold nearly as much as all the other consoles combined, scooping up almost 50% of the market share.
Not only has it managed to maintain its place from the previous week, but it's also sold more than twice what it did then. On the week of March 16, the PSP led the pack at 57,651units sold. Its current 129,986 figure is more than twice that.
The handheld's success is attributed to Capcom's release of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which recently topped Japan's software charts at an amazing 880,000 units sold. Here are the rest of the hardware sales in Japan for the week of March 30:
- PSP - 129,986
- DS Lite - 58,916
- Wii - 48,785
- PS3 - 11,206
- PS2 - 10,296
- Xbox 360 - 1,547

JAPAN.
If you want to sell like this in the States and Europe, kill those goofy irrelevant ads and play hardball against the competitors with substance.
Substance being:
1. Good games that are made for the console. Not just ports.
2. Perhaps, even another hardware rollout featuring an even more streamlined form factor for the adult demographic. Adults like options. Adults hate BULK in their pockets!
3. Application software that makes the machine more useful than just a multimedia device. eg. Personal Organiser, Music creation tools, etc.
4. GOOD advertising that places emphasis on games that showcases the systems strongpoints. Eg. Monster Hunter, Crisis Core, GoW, etc.
5. Another division dedicated to making software for the kids. The target demographic is the 17 and UNDER crowd. This will slice directly into the Nintendo target demographic.
I wish to God that someone could get me a job in SCEA marketing division.
The first and most important reason that you will never get a job at SCEA marketing is that you undermine the importance of marketing with your own racial biases.
You may not have thought about this when you first wrote your post, but it wreaks of racism against the Japanese, as seen here.
"Kill those goofy irrelevant ads..."
The underlying tone here is one that says: "Americans and Europeans are superior in their decision making skills and won't give into propaganda like those in Japan."
Marketing with advertisements, not just TV ads, but internet and static ads as well, is the single greatest tool that any company can possess. I can see you somewhat agree with me because you say:
"GOOD advertising that places emphasis on games that showcases the systems strongpoints. Eg. Monster Hunter, Crisis Core, GoW, etc. "
In case you hadn't noticed, that's already happening. I've seen more commercials for Crisis Core and GoW then I have for all other PSP games combined.
The final reason is that you can't even get your points straight. Your second point is to design around the adult demographic, but then you go on to say that "The target demographic is the 17 and UNDER crowd."
I don't mean to be contentious, but rather to point out the problems with your arguments. Best of luck on your dreams of joining SCEA.
Exactly. JAPAN, where the Nintendos handheld holds the largest market share.
The PSP outselling the DS in the US/UK isnt as big of a deal as when it outsells the DS in Nintendo dominated territory. So yes, the key word IS Japan.
Please dont soil my post with your own personal insecurities and personal bias. Either your reading skills are defunct or YOU are just plain angry at feeling inferior to Americans and Europeans. Whichever the case, these are YOUR problems and they indeed, PERSONAL.
Now, with that out of the way. Back on topic.
I said JAPAN. I did not say JAPANESE.
My reference is targeted squarely at what the poster above me just said. Japan is where the DS is dominating the marketshare. FOR WHATEVER REASON. (for the sensitive) And, there is no debate here when the numbers are clearly speaking for themselves.
The ads that air here in the US are indeed very goofy and most times are extremely irrelevant to the system itself.
Everything from talking carpet with mexican accents, right down to talking gophers who look at the psp and say, "I'd hit that!" with an inner city urban sensibility.
It's all GOOFY and IDIOTIC. And, we have grown bored with that type of advertising. Shock value is so 90's. We are living in a day where substance, facts and tangible goods rule the day. This should be reflected in the marketing of this psp product. Again the numbers do the talking. At the end of the day, it's not philosophical debate that Sony needs right now. It's high numbers and a need to dominate the current marketshare. Revamped marketing technique is a good place to start.
By the way, I wont need luck to get that job. I have skill.
And, speaking several languages coupled with a degree probably wont hurt the resume as well.
I also know how to read with coherency.
I easily recognize when i am supporting 2 selling points at the same time. Particularly, when I say "Here is how you reach the UNDER 17 crowd" in one point, and then say, "Here is how you reach the OVER 17(adult) crowd in another point. But, I digress. lol
Cheers!
PSP is doing very well lately. I think this will encourage other developers to try to emulate MH's success. Even Kojima has already said he wants to make games for PSP to appeal to that crowd.
I'm actually an American, born and raised with no Asian influence whatsoever.
As well, saying that you have a degree but failing to mention in what field of study is not one of the best ways to establish credibility.
With that said, it seems that the basis for this whole argument lies not with the content, but rather with the simple syntax with which it is presented.
Your first statement dealt with Japan. I naturally assumed that the statement dealing with the "irrelevant goofy ads" would also follow this same Japanese theme, rather than expound upon the new topic of how the US needs to change its marketing campaign already in place. It was simply the organization that threw me off and not the statement itself.
In the same notion, I figured that your comment on how the younger age group being the target demographic dealt as an exemplifying point on the whole comment, and not just that point.
This, combined with the seeming false pride, is what led me to the creation of my first response. To say I am completely sorry for the first post would be a lie, but to say I was wholly correct would be as well.
Namastei!
japanese games are very good. the psp even had 4 games of bleach (1 coming soon). i think they wont release it in the US because those dumb cartoon network/funimation havent finished the whole dubbed crap versions of them, not keeping up with the original story. stop making useless ports! japan psp even has hentai games! wtf is wrong with the US? afraid of getting your white kids getting exposed to such? geez, americans swear on tv everytime and yet they can't come up with nice japanese-based games? and finally, don't dub japanese *****! japanese voices rock! wtf is wrong with zack and sephiroth's voices on crisis core? they sound so gay. i imagine zack saying, "oh yeah!'. dumbasses.
and the japanese psp ads are sooo hella funny. not just for the psp, but for all other consoles. and games as well. i remember a devil amy cry ad in japan wherein the girl slashed her boyfriend with a bouquet of roses and tossing him to the air, mimicking dante's moves. lol. that was hella funny.
yea, japanese had PSP GPS FOR 3 YEARS NOW! wtf is wrong with america?!?! the psp even has a tv tuner for pete's sake! and what do we have here? skype? come on!
and, psp's in japan come in different colors. they have deep red, blue, black, lavender, mint green, ,brown, white, and even pink! what about here in north america? black and white and silver? LAME.
if you go to japan, you can see girls playing psps too. it's because there are psp made for girls (pink, green, lavender colours). and there are also games made for them, like the ds. people say that psp games do not touch the KIDS section. NOT! there are kid-friendly japanese games. sadly, europe and america are just so dumb not importing these kinds of games.
i therefore conclude that US SHOULD STOP GETTING OIL FROM IRAQ.
I wish all arguments were 'worked out' this way over the internet. It's just so easy and peaceful to read, and educational to-boot!
Everyone wins.
