Media Create Japan 10/13 10/19 - PSP sold almost 160K - Image 1The PSP-3000 continues to make huge waves in Japan. All in all, the PSP saw sales more than twice all the consoles and the DS combined. I think "wow" would be the best word in this situation.

Also in the news, the Xbox 360 continues to outsell the PlayStation 3. Here are the numbers for the week of October 19 according to Media Create:
  • PSP: 159,816
  • DS Lite: 29,839
  • Wii: 26,024
  • Xbox 360: 7,856
  • PS2: 7,261
  • PS3: 4,725
If this pace continues through the holidays, Sony might very well surpass their sales forecast by 1 million, as they are now expecting. Even though Sony on the whole may be having some tough times, their gaming division certainly doesn't seem to be.

On the software side of things, Wii Music debuts on top. Ironically there are only two PSP games on there. PS3 and Xbox 360 games are completely absent. The first PS3 game to appear on the Japan charts is on 41st place, and no Xbox 360 game appears on top 50. Curious, considering how the 360 is getting more popular in the region.

Here are Japan's top ten for the same week:
  1. [WII] Wii Music (Nintendo) 92,000 / NEW
  2. [NDS] Pokémon Platinum (Pokémon) 72,000 / 1,754,000
  3. [PSP] Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaikida Or 2 (Sony) 59,000 / NEW
  4. [NDS] Rhythm Tengoku Gold (Nintendo) 51,000 / 1,010,000
  5. [NDS] Culdcept DS (SEGA) 50,000 / NEW
  6. [PS2] Kidou Senshi Gundam 00: Gundam Meisters (Namco Bandai) 43,000 / NEW
  7. [PS2] Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Special (KOEI) 27,000 / 184,000
  8. [PSP] Macross Ace Frontier (Namco Bandai) 26,000 / 130,000
  9. [WII] Wii Fit (Nintendo) 18,000 / 2,740,000
  10. [PS2] Super Robot Wars Z (Namco Bandai) 13,000 / 462,000

» well...

for once its good to know that thE Japanese are slowly but surely moving toawrds hi-def gaming... the DS screen is like plaing games on a 1990's Tube tv. (JUST NOT RIGHT).

Resolution of a display affects how good a game will be? If that's right then why are Brawl, Galaxy etc all so highly rated and good selling, why is the Wii outpacing everything else in the console industry? Why are there more DS than PSP games above 90% on Metacritic?

People will move to HD consoles and media when it becomes more affordable. I've always said this and it's just now that prices are at the right point for the public (even though sales of Sky HD and Freesat are quite low compared to the number of HDTVs sold).

... Plus your argument is broken because the Wii is still outselling both HD consoles in Japan. Hmm.

» What has

World of warcraft to do with PSP sales ??? =)

» Well...

I'm glad the PSP is selling well, and I'm not surprised it's finally outselling the DS.

In fact, for years the DS has kept selling like crazy, by now the market should be so full of it that it order to outsell the PSP,people who already own a DS should buy it again, and maybe once more !

It reminds me of my childhood, there was a famous brand of laundry washing machines that were so good, so solid and relatively inexpensive that after a couple of years almost every household had one and the company actually went out of business because they weren't selling anymore !

Of course times change and Nintendo will not run out of business, in fact just when you think nobody needs to buy a DS anymore, there it comes the Lite, and then the DSi, and then hopefully the DS2!

Point is, better sales doesn't make a product better in any case.

» Damn

why so argumentative he just said that looks like Jap is getting more HD hardware opposed to the past Like PS3 360 and PSP have been doing better and they are HD console he didnt state an invalid fact but neither did you it was just uncalled for nor was he saying any HD devivce is out selling anything

» WTF are you talking about?

The PSP's screen isn't even remotely within the realm of HD. It's screen is only 480x272. To be HD it would have to do AT LEAST 1280x720.

Also, these sales numbers are from the PSP-3000's initial sales in Japan so of course it outsold the DS this week. In fact, we can expect to see numbers like these for weeks until either the hype dies down, everyone who REALLY wants one gets it, or until a huge lash-back occurs due to the PSP-3000's interlaced screen.

» True But Then Again

The PSP's screen isn't HD by any means but having a resolution of 480x270 on a 4" screen is still pretty damn good. At times it can rival the PS2's graphics. Even some games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max look better on the PSP than they did in the arcade. Either way you look at it the PSP's screen is at least a step up from SDTV and far better than the DS's screen.

» I'm just curious

what laundry machines were they? I'm interested to know... sounds like a good story.

» Truely a matter of opinion...

The only reason Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max looks better than the original arcade is actually BECAUSE the screen is so small. You're much less likely to notice the "jaggies" on the character sprites or in the backgrounds.

As for the screen being a step up from SDTV, that's not only technically incorrect, but it's also purely a matter of opinion.

As for my opinion, the PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 both have horrible ghosting artifacts due to their low refresh rate. The PSP-3000 has very visible interlacing artifacts. I believe that even SDTVs provide a better picture than ANY of the PSP screens.

And yeah, the PSP's screen trounces the DS's without a doubt.

» Disagreed completely.

One reason I bought PSP is because it's like an HD gaming system in the palm of your hands. It is a step up from SD, which was 4:3, interlaced, and usually a cathode ray tube. CRTs tend to be blurrier than LCDs. I never noticed any ghosting issues on my 1000 and 2000 series PSPs, the issue is overblown. Hell, some PS2 games (take ICO for example) are rendered at a lower resolution than PSPs 480*272. Being widescreen and progressive scan is a huge advantage.

» Oh noes... my stars!

meh.

SD - 640x480, 4:3, interlaced, 60Hz

PSP-1000 + 2000 - 480x272, 16:9, progressive, 30Hz

PSP-3000 - 480x272, 16:9, interlaced, 60Hz

If you bought a PSP because it's LIKE HD, then I guess one that actually IS HD will blow your f***ing mind.

Ghosting artifacts - try copying a video from your PSP to a PC and play it back on there. For a more direct comparison, use a PC with an LCD screen and play the video on your PSP simultaneously.

If the ghosting artifacts STILL cannot be seen, please see an optometrist.

Note: PSP-3000 users have ghosting artifacts replaced with the interlacing artifacts "feature".

Ico's resolution - ... I don't know if that's correct or not, but I can't find anything on this at all. Could someone drop a link for a site with this confirmed?
