Japanese Charts: PSP Surges on Dissidia Launch, DS Still On Top - Image 1

Square Enix proves once again just how much of a power player it is in the industry. Dissidia: Final Fantasy is currently the top-selling game in Japan, causing PSP sales to get pumped up even higher than the Wii's. Squeenix pulled off the same feat with the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

For the week of December 21, the PSP sold close to 146,000 units, a far cry from the 72,000 figure it sold the previous week. Nintendo still bagged top spot though, with the DSi selling more than any platform.

The PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 are still lagging behind, though Sony's console sold significantly higher numbers than Microsoft's. Guess their price cut has lost its charm. Here are the sales numbers for the week of December 21:
  • DSi      204,144
  • PSP     145,957
  • Wii     131,054
  • DS Lite     50,308
  • PS3     39,136
  • Xbox 360     12,914
  • PS2     8,662

Well my hopes are dashed. After cutting through all the hype on this site, a friend in Japan got the game and said its pace is way too slow and the game just is a complicated mess. Concurs with many of his friends that Square should stop messing around with odd battle systems and make a proper remake of FFVII.

I don't know about all that. I don't even speak/read Japanese and I can comprehend the game without much problem. It certainly has a complex battle system, but it's hardly a "complicated mess." Mortal Kombat it isn't, but then again, it isn't meant to be.

I like the game, there are actually some level of depth in the game as you can customize the move sets for each characters to your liking. Also, it is not a strictly fighting game but more of a blend between RPG and Brawl-type game. And the more you level up the stronger you are. Coupled that with the Story mode, DUel Colisuem, ad-hoc fighting, I am sure the replayability is high.

who plays dsi? I don't know anyone with a DSi...how is it dominating all the time...

» DSi

Lots of people in Japan. There's lots of subway/train usage so people tend to get DS/PSP to play while travelling. Also many children get DSi's as presents even if they don't play them. >.>
