November 1 marked the launch date of Sony's PSP Go in Japan. How well did the new, UMD-less handheld fare in the land of the rising sun? Not too well, as Enterbrain reports.

The Famitsu parent company released figures earlier today for the first-day sales of PSP Go. According to said report, the PSP Go sold 28,275 units on launch date, with retail and download titles like Persona 3 Portable and Dissidia Final Fantasy Universal Tuning, as well as Disgaea Infinite and LocoRoco Midnight Carnival debuting alongside it.

It cannot be helped to compare how the other "re-modeled" handhelds fared in the sales section. When the DSi launched in November 2008, in two days alone, it had already moved 170,000 units. In fact, the refurbished DS handheld consistently dominates the hardware sales charts for Japan. The PSP-3000 meanwhile, for all the criticism that it met, sold somewhere above 140,000 in its first four days on top of retail store shelves.

The PSP Go has been met with much excitement, albeit the wary kind, in the West, and has been proclaimed as an overpriced disappointment by some upon its launch.

idk why SONY hates the homebrew community if theyre just helping the PSP get more popular than the sucky ass NINTENDO DS

» Youve gotten use to cfw and piracy

The psp wasnt suppose to be like this in the first place. Official firmware is suppose to be the way to go. It just so happens we have the ability to take things further. Yea its a dream come true but i wouldnt rub that in anyones face.

Its like now you wint purchase a new system because you cant get free games. Im not saying youre like that and im not ranting on the psp go super high price. It was just an example. There really are people like that now, and thats just sad for video games.

» @fang17

but homebrew is perfectlly legal, it isnt piracy

Sony just needs to think of adding better stuff.

I bet it isn't even the developers fault but the corporate fat cats that they have to run it by.

I mean if they had some of the guys who make all these convenient hombrew apps working at Sony the PSP would be at a whole new level.

"wint" lmao its suppose to say "wont".

» @ psp2

Th@s exactly it. Once they get their psp's hacked, they'll never go back. In all honesty though, homebrew has helped drive the sales of the psp b/c of spreading da word. It was also really necessary during the early years the psp was gettin very few good games, but yeah now homebrew has become the norm and is a very high encouragement for piracy hence da reason Sony relentlessly fights CFW and releases more advanced psp models.

And this psp go failure should be a sign to move on to a psp2 and make it the way a psp should've been, DUAL ANALOGS WIT BUTTONS!!

by xyal_zx - 2009-11-02 17:02
» its got bluetooth

hey its got bluetooth so you can play some of those dual analog ps1 games. maybe we'll see some of that for future psp games as well.

28 k is being reported as above predictions, so it definitely hasn't "failed" yet. I'm not saying it's a huge success, but it's stupid to say things that only time can tell.

Looks like somebody at sony got some explaining to do perhaps they should update their resume now and draft a resignation...

What they should have been doing is looking for a better way to secure the games from being copied or cracked instead of developing hardware to compete with the ipod touch.

It isnt a game console no matter how many people try to spin it that way the games are the same cell phone game over and over there is just a bunch of variations of the same thing with a few gems that all get copied 80 times for .99 cents up to 50 freaking dollars. I own an ipod touch i have seen what the app store has to offer and it is garbage 80 people trying to make money off 1 persons idea...

@ RetroGamerX3

I fully agree with you.

Sony really needs this 'useful app share thing'.

It could be placed in the PSN-shop. And they shouldn't cost anything.

They should be just like normal homebrews here on QJ, but then officially Sony.. or something. Useful apps could be added, like: AdhocFileTransf er, or PSPTube. Maybe some useful plugins could be handy too: HUD, Game Categories etc.

» It just makes me laugh......

Sony takes the same hardware adds bluetooth to it and jacks up the price and say hey buy this handheld and repurchase all the games you own because its portable and you can take it anywhere you go....man whatever...just to let you know if the people in Asia dont care for the damn thing then thats a wrap because its gonna die really soon in the US for real and there is nothing anyone can say about that.......

by ShinseiTom - 2009-11-03 13:06
» I think...

He meant from the US, obviously.

That means you can't play one of the most fun games for the system on the PSP Go right now. Which is BS.

by psp4fun - 2009-11-04 09:42
» re-it just makes me lough....too

you right! but don't forget that most of the PSP users are fans and many of them are collectors, so sony does not care what we think.

by lunas - 2009-11-04 15:27
» but...

the go is a piece of crap a failed idea that sony should not have let happen they are already pissed about the ps3 causing such huge losses for them already.

and he can still play it he just needs is to buy it from any other psn network that it is on...
