Japan hardware sales: Nintendo DS slides back to third place |
Ó

The Nintendo DS, which has more or less always been on top of the charts in Japan, seems to have lost some of its charm for February. Could it be that it's really slipping or is it just that the other platforms are taking some of the limelight?
For the first two weeks of February, the DS slipped down to third place, behind the Wii and the PSP. On the third week, it gained some of its momentum back, and reached second place. However, for the last week of February, it slipped back to third place.
As we draw farther away from the winter holidays, sales across all platforms are slipping. However, the DS's slip in sales in relation to the other platforms may be a point of concern in the future. Here are the numbers in Japan for the week ending on February 28th:
- Wii: 63,504
- PSP: 53,373
- DS Lite: 50,151
- PS3: 14,060
- PS2: 9,634
- Xbox 360: 2,001

PS2 > XBOX360 xD
So what. DS rocks and it will be back again. So what.. I dont listen to the rates and percentage.. They are stupid and untrue anyway.
It's incredible to see how people care about this. I mean yea, the DS has been on top since its birth (being sold out for too long in too many places asde). And it drops a couple of times and it's news?
How desperate are people to see the DS fail? Isn't it already the best selling game device ever, wishing it to do badly now is kinda not going to have an impact against that.
The PS2 has sold far more than the DS. So that right there proves you wrong.
The reason sales of the DS are slipping is cuz the PSP is hitting with some amazing titles this year coupled with the fact that so many DSs are already out there - it's just over saturation. A lot of people who want a DS are now owners of the system.
This doesn't come as a suprise. How many NDS's were sold in Japan? What's the population of Japan? Something tells me if you compare those two stats you'll discover a very interesting and rather high percentage number staring right back at you.
You musn't be that smart if you're comparing figures from a 4 year old and 8 year old console...
DS has 65million. PS2 had 120million.
It's doing better. Look at any charts you find. The DS constantly outsells everything to become the best selling (READ: not the most sold, yet) system. The Wii too outpaced the PS2 which was the previous best seller.
FYI: Japan has a 127mi population
I just got $120 for my used, 8 year-old PS2 with some games on eBay. People still buy these things. God only knows why
Well back in last November DS sales hit 20million in Japan, and also the population under 15 years of age in Japan was 17.4 million as of April 2007
Sooooooo~ its possible its getting to the point that everyone in Japan that wants one has one.
With all those Wiis sold in Japan for the 2 decent titles available for it you would think there would be some promising games coming, but no such luck.
The DS is basically the same, kid's games like pokemon, the usual mario remakes, but absolutely nothing for adults to enjoy.
Yet both these crap systems sell the best. WTF is wrong with Japan?
"With all those Wiis sold in Japan for the 2 decent titles"
It's easy to see where you go wrong when you use your personal opinions to try to invalidate how the rest of the world feels.
"you would think there would be some promising games coming, but no such luck."
I do think there are and so do many others. In FACT, based on sales figures alone there have already been promising titles released. Try to do some fact checking next time.
"The DS is basically the same, kid's games like pokemon, the usual mario remakes"
Tisk tisk, your not looking at facts again. Plenty of adults enjoy the NDS. However, lets say the NDS was primarily a kids toy. What's your point? Is it written in stone somewhere that the NDS must be an adult oriented toy? There are PLENTY of games for it that are not Nintendo based characters. So again, you are wrong.
"but absolutely nothing for adults to enjoy."
This is why people think you're an idiot. It's a FACT that COUNTLESS adults enjoy the NDS system. For you to state "specifically" there are NO games for adults to enjoy....well....that makes you 100% WRONG.
"Yet both these crap systems sell the best. WTF is wrong with Japan? "
Actually, you mean WTF is wrong with the WORLD. I think it's funny that you ask this question. Maybe there is nothing wrong with Japan or the world. Maybe it's YOU who has the problem and is "wrong". I suspect you ask yourself this A LOT. HAHAHAHA!!!!!!! !!!!
