Japan hardware sales: DS still on third place, PS3 gets boost |
Ó
Ever since February, the Nintendo DS has been losing a bit of its staying power in the Japanese market. While it was usually in first place before, the past few weeks have found it in third place (with a slight respite a few weeks ago when it hit second place).
With the DS settling on third place, the Sony PlayStation Portable has been sitting pretty on second place until last week, when the release of the mint green model shot it up to first place. The boost is short-lived however, as the PSP is back on second place.
Also of note this week is that the PlayStation 3 got a boost in sales, while all the other platforms (except Microsoft's Xbox 360) experienced a decline. Last week the PS3 sold 13,520 units, which is quite a difference from its present 21,008.
The Xbox 360 also got a slight rise in sales, but only marginally so. At least, the rise is not as noticeable as the PlayStation 3's. Last week the 360 sold 2,282 units, as compared to this week's 2,891 units. Here are the sales figures in Japan for the week ending on March 9:
- Wii: 57,068
- PSP: 53,924
- DS Lite: 48,658
- PS3: 21,008
- PlayStation 2: 10,429
- Xbox 360: 2,891

then it's not selling well at all! If, with a boost, the wii is selling 3x more..
the wii really should be selling more, based solely on its price. i think ps3 is the better system, but with smash bros out, people seem to forget that. they'll remember when metal gear solid 4 comes out.
the wii is also 100 cheaper.
Home and GTA4 will give the PS3 a bigger boost.
sony needs to make tv ads that show what the ps3 is. its not just a gaming system.
After christmas there isn't anything worth buying for DS so far...
At least for me that's the case.
It's incredible how out of touch a lot of people here are, relying on minor points to promote the fact they're simply fans of a certain company or product.
Home and MGS4 aren't going to affect the Wii. It's simply priced too much. In the UK the Wii has 1 competition now - the 360. The Arcade bundle is cheaper whilst the Premium can be had for the same price as a Wii. But you know what? Nintendo didn't budge on their pricing since it's already the best seller. This is a momentum, if the PS3 dropped to half the price of a Wii the Wii would still be a huge seller.
Think of it as the iPhone. It's currently one of the best selling smart phones on the market, even though there are (same for iPod) better products as far as features go it all boils down to the interface and marketing of such interface.
My market predictions, which have been right for a few years now - The Wii continues as it always has. The PS3 might overtake the 360 but not in the US, the library is simply too small to compete right now (Sony's fault for the long delay).
not here it isn't.
Wii- £180
360- £150, £200, 250
PS3- £300
And people want "just a gaming system". Look at the Wii and DS. Needless features are seen as disposable. I for one have never even used a 360 to watch a DVD, I'm sure I'm not alone (again, Wii).
The Wii here in Canada is $249, the 360 $299 and $399 and the PS3 $399 and $499. Now, tell me just how the 360 only $50 more than the Wii and the PS3 just $150 more than the Wii are super expensive? You're a fool.
Also, you comment on the Wii's interface being something of a great makes me laugh. It's all a hype banner that sucks people in. Frack, I know atleast 7 people with a Wii who wish they hadn't bought it, a few who use it primarily as a Virtual console and others who use it every so often but are glad they have another system to fall back on. That right there will speak of it's staying power.
"That right there will speak of it's staying power."
You mean you and your 7 friends? Lol, okay. You're not one of the people who think the Wii is a fad? It's got prolific staying power. It's been over a year now as the weakest console with less online abilities and media features than the other 2. But there it is. Breaking all sales records.
And who said it was expensive? That's some odd little argument you pulled out from somewhere. My point was that the Wii costs more than the 360 in the UK (or at least the cheapest SKU, same as the Premium SKU) and it still continues the sales. It was an argument for how popular and good the Wii is.
Now don't get me wrong I'm no Wii fan. I just tell it how it is. TBH the only console I've used this whole year is the PSP.
Wii has won this gen. I called it before it launched (aiming at casual market+good price+good marketing+win) and I'm still right.
well mabye the reason your not watching dvds on your 360 is because it isnt a feature of it at all, its a feature of a $100 add on, while the ps3 playing blu-rays is a huge feature
now you know 8 people who wish they havnt bought a wii, as im one of them
For now, it seems that Wii will surely take the throne. However, it's still too early to dismiss both the 360 and the PS3. First of all, what games are coming to the Wii that are worth playing after Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Not a lot right? Looking at the other two, the 360 offers tons of good titles that appeal to the North American market. Whereas the PS3 is a mixed of both North American and the Asian market. Big titles like Gears of War 2, Huxley, and a lot more are going to the 360. For the PS3, there are Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2 (could be a 2009 title), etc. I don't have the list of games memorized but I am sure there are more good games than the Wii will have from the Sony and Microsoft camps. Now don't get me wrong as I know Wii has potential and will get great games down the road. But honest, developers need a powerful system to realize their vision of their games. Does Wii deliver on that premise? Not really, all it has is a slightly more powerful xbox original hardware and a motion sensing input. Which these things Sony already has. With the Playstation Eye having more potential than the Wii mote. I know people who were so hyped about the Wii, got theirs and they enjoyed it. However, as time went by, they eventually got sick of it. They say it is good for party games, not games that you play by yourself. With majority of the games that developers do being single player and online multiplayer games, does the Wii suit the position? And also the Wii has pretty weak online multiplayer functionality, so Wii isn't the system to be developing those games for. Also, its graphics capabilities are really outdated compared to the other two consoles, which both have great online capabilities and also media server functionalities . Most people buy console nowadays for games, and Wii doesn't have a whole lot of AAA titles. 360 is currently the strongest in that front, with the PS3 behind in the second place. Wii has the weakest line up so far. So, Wii could still win the throne, but its probability of succeeding isn't 99%.
Heh you don't have your thinking cap on.
IIRC it costs £2.5 million to make a Wii game, £10 million to produce a PS3/360 game.
Yea, everything else aside it's obvious why many of the smaller, more creative studios are working with XBLA and the Wii (and also the DS but thats another story). The ONLY thing holding the Wii back is Nintendos very strict policy on publishing games for the system. As a new developer myself with small publishing deals I can't afford to work on a PS3 or 360 game. All we're (which is true so far) going to see on them powerful systems are games that are known to make money, aka more of the same. More GTA clones, more FPS games and WW2-set games. I don't want that.
And where the hell have you been? The Wii has been selling for a very long time without serious games. Always on top. Whereas the PS3 and 360 get killer titles out and they still don't push past Wii sales.
It's won. Nintendo have done a very very good with it.
WHAT? Are you some kind of blind monkey. The 360 plays DVDs without any add on you brainless *****!
