Japan hardware sales decline: PS3 close to top, PSP sales down

Wii Falling Close to the PS3 - Image 1A sign that we are closer to the end of the world: Japan seems to be falling out of love with video games.

The latest numbers show that sales of consoles have dropped across the board. On the bright side for Sony, the PS3 is close to becoming top dog among the consoles again, since Wii sales experienced a sharp slump.

On the other hand, the PSP saw the worst decline, dropping 18,000 from the previous week. The Xbox 360 experienced the least change, with sales only dropping by 1,000 - though it's still trailing at the bottom of the board.

Japan is probably only experiencing the post-holiday slump, the time when everyone suddenly realizes how much they actually spent for Christmas. I should know. I'm broke again. Here are the numbers in Japan for the week ending on January 18 (sales numbers from the previous week in parentheses):
  • DSI 62,525 (78,201)
  • PSP 42,559 (60,495)
  • Wii 32,333 (41,243)
  • PS3 20,690 (28,144)
  • DS Lite 18,809 (23,429)
  • Xbox 360 9,576 (10,554)
  • PS2 5,760 (6,628)

I don't think they love the systems less, I think they're just experiencing the same recession as everyone else.

The recession has affected the global economy, believe it or not, this includes Japan
