Jack Tretton: Sony considering PSP with hard drive, internal memory

Will there be a memory-enhanced PSP in the future? - Image 1Following the announcement of a new PSP Entertainment Pack comes another interesting revelation into the business strategy for the PlayStation Portable.

At a gathering of journalists earlier today, Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, mentioned that Sony was (and is) thinking about the possibility of making a PSP with a built-in hard drive or internal memory.

According to Tretton, the chances of a new PSP with extra storage are becoming more likely, given the recently announced ability to pick up movies on your PS3 and move them to the PSP as well as the continuing drop in price of memory.

Tretton also noted that the advent of digitally distributed movies for the PSP is likely to affect the UMD movie sales, either supplementing UMD movie sales or becoming "the stake in UMD's heart." Tretton admits that "the UMD has struggled. And that's an understatement. That's been a very frustrating thing. I don't think (UMD movies) were handled very effectively."

While we're not too keen on the death of a medium, the possibility of seeing a new PSP model with more memory is certainly an intriguing prospect. Hopefully, Sony finds a way to create a market for a memory-enhanced PSP and further UMD movie sales.

» ***** this

Not to be an @55 hole here but this is so disappointing. I brought the fat. A few years later I bought the slim and now this? Can't they just design a PSP and make it the final. I can't keep spending money because SONY decides to screw everybody who bought the last system when a new one comes out. I thought the memory sticks were good enough but all you guys who may want to buy this thing better get ready for at least a $350 price tag. HDD isn't cheap.

by frostbitehunter - 2008-07-16 10:10
» psps will be capable to hold up to 2 terabytes

psps already can hold up to 2 terabytes because of the fat32 system they use.who cares bout internal memory meh

just keep making supported pro duo sticks.and try for stuff higher than 16 gigs.cmon now

like i said psps can hold up to 2 terabytes alredy because they use fat32s.same thing with ps3 =P

first the PS1, then the PS2, now the PS3... when are they gonna stop making systems!!< /sarcasm > do you know how dumb that sounds... of course the PSP will keep changing... that's the nature of electronic devices...

I for one am glad that they finally admitted the mistake of the UMD.

As for the Harddrive, I hope they make the HDD removable and upgradable... I actually prefer flash memory, and with the size increases, I don't think that an HDD is really necessary... I think they should support multiple memory stick slots though... to avoid having to switch them out so often.

» psp2 not psp slim

make a psp2 with internal hard drive and compatibility to play ps2 games that would be awesome and kill the UMD already it is too limited start making memory sticks with movies on them, smaller, infinite memory(not really), cheaper, more profit and every1 is happy

by Foolmonkey - 2008-07-16 11:17
» no

you could not fit that much memory into the psp.

by lexcavaj - 2008-07-16 11:27
» i second this...

earlier i have read at gizmodo that scandisk has come up w/ a read-only SDcard. HERE IS YOUR CHANCE SONY!! take advantage of this new technology and use it for your profitablity!

e.g.

movies on read-only memstick PROduo's! (just come up w/ good encryption and your piracy problems gone)

pspboom is right. KILL UMD coz seriously, this st*pid thing is one big reason why i switched to CFW's.

» great

This is why I give up on sony.

Everytime I buy their fat ass device, they slim a year later.

Thats why I going to give up on Sony. I going to sell my psp and get wii and join in the homebrew wii fun since I really don't take my psp anywhere.

I'm not sure you know the difference between "can address" and "can hold". It will be long after the PSPs life before a portable can hold 2TB.

by c74gta4smash - 2008-07-16 13:45
» Did you not read my comment

I said basically why keep forcing people to move up a notch on the same system when it isn't that drastic of a change. What you said was totally rediculous. I wasn't talking about PS1 to PS2, I was talking about PSP to PSP Slim. They both do the same thing just with slightly more ram and a few new options they cahrge you 200 for a remake. I'm talking about remakes not Next gen systems. What you said was completely off topic.

by xploren - 2008-07-16 13:53
» Simple.

It's because as time goes on, the companies figure out a better, and sometimes a cost-efficient way to create their system. Take for example the Slim. It's slimmer, the loading's faster, etc. And it was cheaper to make than the first one. So there you go.

And besides, you can always trade-in your old systems and get the new one in stores like GameStop. -_-

by xploren - 2008-07-16 13:55
» Idiot.

Nintendo slims down their systems, too. A redesigned Wii isn't far along. I smell another DS Lite. -_-

by Strongbadunit2 - 2008-07-16 14:18
» dude..

the psp and psp slim where meant to be very similar, just like the ipod and ipod nano. But this will be much different. It will have many new features...so keep your rants to yourself until you know the full details. It will be just like ps2 to ps2 slim to ps3.

» good idea but what the hell?

it seems im the only one failing to understand the failure of UMD.

If the DVD format wasnt the prime format for movies, would that mean the PS2 should get rid of its DVD player that is used for games?

Even if the Bluray failed, would that mean games would have to stop being developed on bluray discs?

thought everyone prefered their hardcopy of their purchases, not some f*cking giant downloadable 's

what the hell?

"e.g.

Except that read/write MS Pro Duos will STILL EXIST.

by chessboxer - 2008-07-16 20:50
» I don't see the problem with UMD's...

If Blu-ray didn't succeed as the medium for film, games would still be on Blu-ray because what else would Sony use? DVD?

We're already seeing the limits of DVD, even PC games are now being sold on multiple DVD9's (John Woo Presents Stranglehold and BlackSite to name a few) and games on the 360 are being sold the same way.

UMD will continue for games, even if they stop using it for films.

I do like 73N5H1's comment about supporting multiple memory sticks. SanDisk (faster than Sony's) need to make much larger capacity duo pro's. I want a 16GB or 32GB stick at an affordable price.

Alternatively, if they do make a PSP with an internal HDD then it has to be upgradeable. Probably using the small Toshiba HDD's used in iPod's. 160GB? Yes please

by dazmo - 2008-07-16 21:08
» man . . .

the death of the UMD was not necessary. homeboy said it himself, it just wasnt handled well.

they COULD release a 40 usb UMD burner, so you could use THAT to store data as an aletrnative to cards, but that would just be inviting pirates into your underwear drawer

. . . they should have put security measures on the first UMD's (read only) so that they could release a burner taht could tell the difference. not that it would matter, someone would find a way to mod it.

but yeah, just the thought, and we all knew it was coming from day 1, (seriously, its just not right.) that the UMD is dying its still kinda depressing.

. . . its like ive got this big empty hole. . .

. . . in the back of my playstation . . .

so lets all snicker in the back of our minds about the death of the UMD and its ironic name, and get on with our lives.

by dazmo - 2008-07-16 21:17
» noway

dude the psp is like the perfect gadget. . . if sony would stop screwing it up.

its the right size for your pocket. . . its ergonomic (basically) its got buttons configured for games (about as interactive as a gadget needs to be), a big beautiful screen. . .

your just mad cause it doesnt look like a tricorder hehe.

all it needs is a touch screen, a fold out keyboard, and a translucent flexible design so you can glue it to your face and become a 4th dimensional geek. perfect gadget.

by dazmo - 2008-07-16 21:22
» actually. . .

the UMD slot makes a good place to hide personal things now. . . in fact ive been using mine to store condoms cause gamers so get teh chicks. . .

hey baby. . . (click - boing - huzzah!)

by pspslim2000 - 2008-07-16 23:03
» stop

dont change the design sony! just add touch screen, blue tooth, infared, and more programs like pda! internal hardrive would be good but im satified with memory stick. just make a 100gb memory stick and sell it cheap! soooooooony please listeeennn...........

by Torch - 2008-07-17 00:20

The newer firmware already have some HDD functions in them, which means they have been thinking about this for a while.

by SikWitThiz - 2008-07-17 01:06
» Im Glad

I glad they are moving forward. If Sony choose to stand still on their product the same fools who are complaining now would be complaining more then. UMD's are Ok but the quality of how its made sucks. They come apart to easy or the clear face comes out with any type of bump. That is my main gripe with UMD's. I think the movies and games on a memory stick would be great. You should also be able to copy the movie from that on to your PSP after registering the movie online with a server activated code only. That would be a great compliment to the hard drive upgrade if they go through with it. Hopefully with that hard drive added in they will give a useful size in it like at least over 30Gb's. I know some of yall will b|t[h about the cost but most of yall know im right. If they put a nice sized harddrive in the PSP ya'll will buy it. If they decide to jump on the the touch screen bandwagon thats fine too as along as it is with a great response time no lags and so forth.

by Rasb23 - 2008-07-17 01:12
» size

Sounds like a good idea but they will screw it up. Most likely they way there pushing the 1GB pro duos in the bundle packs, they'll just create a 1 GB internal drive. Did and one think that they may remove the memory stick port? Could be worst then what it's worth.

by Hekynn - 2008-07-17 02:49
» Um

Dont need to make a HD for the psp just make the memory stick duo's memory size alot bigger but also put a cheap price on it as well. And I hope ya guys will still be making a 32gb MS DUO stick for the psp

You can make calls with skype. And it's free if you're calling another skype account. Currently skype is the PSP phone.

» UMDS...

the way ive seen it, umds have been keeping the psp from using its full power... it only fits 1.8 gb per disc, which isnt enough.. for CC: FFVII, they were considering alot more features, like multiplayer, but the size of the disc kept them from using half the stuff they planned. so they eother need to make a mini bluray disc (or something like that) or a built in hdd, so they can make more ps2 quality games, like they said the psp could

by majorbb100 - 2008-07-17 13:01
» @ultimax

yeah there probably is, they just arent released, a psp with a hard drive is my dream.

by majorbb100 - 2008-07-17 13:06
» haha

wow dude.

by majorbb100 - 2008-07-17 13:11
» idea

yeah instead of google search they should have...

1. under network made and official youtube browser similiar to psptube but better obviously.

OR

2. Added functions similiar to a pda such as address book, .txt veiwer, and more.

OR

3. Do what some new phones are doing and incorporate ms word, ms powerpoint, and ms excel as programs.

OR

4. At LEAST should have given us more video format supports.

but i think they should ditch the umd and use ms pro duos for games, allowing for extremely fast load times, basically unlimited amounts of memory, and smaller and wont ever scratch or get damaged.

by majorbb100 - 2008-07-17 13:13
» haha

haha a 1 gig hard drive for the psp haha. i actually wouldnt be suprised to see that.
