He didn't just lash out against GTA (by the way, the correct answer for why Hot Coffee was there is closer to "too lazy" than "practical joke", it was a stupid idea but removing these things completely is not always as easy as you seem to think...but it was still pretty stupid). This man has insisted that games are in fact murder simulators, attempted to get such tame games as frickin' the SIMS banned (if we ban that, what sort of games do you think will survive?), lied in court (or at the very least used wrong information without even making a show of verification), thrown out frivolous lawsuits, threatened people, and claimed he was "joking" about a conditional donation he promised to charity when the condition was met (the owners of Penny Arcade paid the charity for him). He's an ***** who just wants to get on TV.

Video games definitely are not the cause of stupidity. In fact, video games have been proven to exercise the mind to a certain extent. Also, as one who grew up playing video games I can not help but laugh at the idea that a video game can give a person such silly ideas. Oh, and #25, North Americans do have freedom of speech...as long as they watch what they say around others in order to avoid pissing off the majority of people around them and being sued, and allow what they say to be censored if it is broadcast and have certain words and ideas removed or bleeped out. But then, I guess North America does have more freedom than many other areas of the world so it is not all bad.

Okay yeah, because The Sims is a bad game. It's a real life simulator. You go through the process of getting a house, meeting a significant other, and starting a family. How is that bad? Parents should be the ones that control what their kids play. I worked at Best Buy and I made sure to always inform parents of the rating system and to let them know what they were buying. Last time I purchased a game at Electronics Boutique I encountered a kid that asked me to buy GTA for him because his parents and the guy at the cash register told him he was underage and the game was rather extreme in some areas. A person who was browsing near him agreed with them and recommended a bunch of other games that he could play, even helped him to pick a game out that would be more appropriate. The people who sell these games do not sell games rated as mature to little kids, if a little kid plays the game and mistakes it for reality than the person who gave him the game, not the people who created it, should be held accountable. The kid should be considered to be a total moron if he does not figure out the difference, most kids already are watching violent shows aimed at them ranging from road runner cartoons to power rangers and they do not seem to be deluded into perceiving things as a violent fantasy world. As for adults, anybody with an adult mind would know the difference between tv and video games and reality. And I say that not as a GTA fan but as an adult who grew up playing violent video games, some of which involved torturing the computer generated opponents and killing them slowly and painfully or brutally. Last but not least, what the hell is so bad about the sims? In the sims you play god and assist some guy in his daily life with finding work, catering to his needs, finding love, etc. If the sims gets banned, what game genre would be left?

How hipocritical can this putz be? I've been playing games for better than 25 years now. I've seen it all. Played a lot of it. I know the difference between right and wrong, good and bad and all that crap. Kids these days have access to TV and movies that are way more violent than most of the games today. Factor in all the news reports we see of the stuff going on in the world and I think that video games are the last of our worries. I also think that the retail industry is doing a very good job at keeping M rated games from out of kids hands. I also think that the game industry is doing a very good job at their VOLUNTARY rating system. The MPAA ratings were imposed upon Hollywood. The ESRB ratings were not. Thompson and the rest of his ilk seriously need to lay off the wacky weed. It's not the governments job to say what our children should and shouldn't be watching, listening to and playing. It the PARENTS job. Apparently, people just aren't being parents.
