It's Official: 2.81 Out Now

FW 2.81

You can now lay all your speculations to rest. Sony has just released firmware 2.81. The update was made on September 7, 2006 (as some pointed out, it's ironically just right after the 2.80 Decrypter was made available) and YourPSP says the system software update included a patch that would address vulnerability in the system software. Naturally, it includes all features contained in previous software versions.

Sony Japan's website lists down the Memory Stick related problems that they've fixed. Translation from the Sony Japan's website here are those updates.
  • With "ATRAC" files which have been protected in SonicStage and then saved to Memory Stick PRO Duo, the protection management data becomes corrupted, and become unable to be played back
  • Memory Stick PRO Duo media which have been formatted from either the PSP or a Memory Stick formatter are recognized as unformatted media when connecting the PSP to a PC with the USB cable
A bore so far? The clincher is this and we quote: "PSP systems with system software version 2.80 or earlier do not correctly recognise high-capacity Memory Stick Duo with more than 4GB of free (recordable) memory space." However, is this lure of bigger space enough to get people to upgrade?

If you ask us, all that Sony has done in the 2.81 release is that it has given us a choice. If you really, really and we mean really, need more than 4GB then by all means upgrade. YourPSP and Sony Japan is offering the download. Love your homebrew? Then don't.

Is it a good move by Sony? Well apparently not, cause we've just found out that the 2.80 decrypter works on 2.81. What good does that do for us? Well it could only mean that Sony's newest baby may soon be emulated via DevHook!

Thanks to everyone who took the extra time of tipping us about this update.

This upgrade is nearly for nothing. I think it's just because of the homebrew , and the iso emulators. Sony don't want us to play homebrew :( anyway, i hope that this decrypter will work. It's good to know that some people can f*ck up sony's defense system ^^

Maybe we should save some time for the retards, before they even post.

1)No this does not mean you can run an e-loader on 2.8(1)

2)No this has nothing to do with a downgrader for 2.8(1)

3)No this does not in any way help TA-082 users.

4)No there really is no point in using this upgrade, unless you have no interest in EVER running homebrew, because I'm going to bet that nobody's going to bother hacking 2.81. Still working on 2.0-2.71 and then maybe 2.8, and by then 3.0 will be out, and nobody will care about 2.81 anymore except the losers that where dumb enough to upgrade to it.

If 8Gb is only recognized in 2.81, how do you intend to boot your 2.81 fw under devhook? From an 8Gb card which the 1.5 fw wouldn't recognize? Or would you switch cards whenever you boot your PSP?

I know that right now, as long as you have DH installed on both memory cards, you can change them around after booting into an emulated firmware, and it doesn't cause any issues. Should be the same if an updated DH comes out.

@12-read again..it looks like they didnt correctly reconigze memory sticks with more than 4GB, and from what i understand, they would only recognize 4 GB from a 8 GB ms....so you would just have to load devhook and fill everything in...and then have half of it not recognized back at 1.5....dont seems like to much of a trouble....

Something that people fail to realize is that it’s Sony’s responsibility to release updates to fix ANY bugs that could possibly be used maliciously.

Homebrewers give themselves way too much credit.

These fixes are no different than a Windows update to fix a security vulnerability. They would be neglegent to their customers to NOT fix the problem. They really couldn’t care less if any 1.5er uses the upgrade or not.

And this release more than likely had absolutely nothing to do with the 2.8 decryption news, it's more than likely just a coincidence that it's the day after that news, and it just happens to be when it was ready to launch.

I would hardly say that Sony got owned. Find an exploit in 2.81 right off the bat, and then I'll agree that Sony got owned.

Just something to think about.

# 4GB+Guest 2006-09-07 09:35
There are two main reasons sony released this update:

1 To fix the exploit (and it is fixed).

2 To prepare for the future Memory Sticks.

Are people not seeing the connection between this update and the upcoming download service?

This update enables the PSP to recognize sticks with more then 4GB capacity, but these sticks are not out yet. So that means we can expect sony to release sticks like 8GB, 16GB and 32 GB within some months. And why would people want those sticks you think? (maybe :) 1 word: PS1DOWNLADSERVICE! a playstation one game is around 350 MB so if you want around 15 games on your stick you'll need at least 5GB. So they are not really trying to make money with the upcoming PS1 service they will make money selling memory sticks. They probaly also don't even care if you should 'illegally' download ps1 games because more games equals more space needed. And according to some calculations I did they will earn even more money selling sticks then selling ps1 games for like 5$, heck if they would release the games for free they would make a fortune of people buying large sticks.

BTW 32GB is the max of Memory Stick Pro Duo.

"And why would people want those sticks you think? (maybe :) 1 word: PS1DOWNLADSERVICE"

lol...1 word:ISOS

*puts on flameproof jacket*

not sure about this but if i had an 8gb stick and used a memory read to put on a new version of devhook ( if there will be one) that can emulate 2.81. i don't think it would have a problem opening it, i think it may have problems writing etc thou...had devices with problems like that in the past...at worst u can just fill it up so theres not 2 much free space.

# #56/59/etc.Guest 2006-09-07 10:24
It's called switch the memory stick after booting.

Heck you'd finally have a use for that 32MB stick (unless devhook becomes too big with the new updates, but it fits on there now).

Throw nothing but devhook on there, use it to boot into 2.81, then once in 2.81, swap it out and throw in your 8GB stick. Not so difficult, just need to make sure that Devhook is also on the 8GB stick. Gonna need a card reader.

# ISO VS UMDGuest 2006-09-07 12:45
To 74, not everyone who downloads ISO is a pirate as you say. I personally own 6 PSP games, and have them all on ISO as well.

The reasons:

- ISO use less battery (the umd access takes more battery than powering the memory card)

- ISO take no space (UMD x 6 is a lot, 1 card = nothing)

- ISO are like backups (You can't scratch ISO - can't really steal them)

I also would like the latest 2.8+ firmware because it allows to use video files without renaming them to their stupid name format.

All in all I am happy with the development that they can decrypt this.

everyone who downloads isos is a pirate.

everyone who backs up isos and uses it is not.

sure there expensive, but you dont have to disrespect the company who makes the psp. sony doesnt determine umd prices. the software devs decide how much they want to sell their own games for. sony releases the single greatest handheld device ever to hit shelves, and here you guys exploit the ***** out of it and then make fun of sony. i dont see you makin any of these. sony is tryin to protect the psp from downfall and corruption, maybe its a mistake blocking out whatever homebrew you like, but its protection from the "dreamcast". im a 1.5 user and i have isos of my own games which i do own because i respect the games that they make, im not a fatass obese american who sits on his ass all day complaining about how bad ***** is, i dont see you makin anything better either. and if you cant afford psp games, then you cant afford a psp. your obviously 12 then. get a job.

# Same crapGuest 2006-09-07 13:40
I'm hearing the same crap once again from everyone in the homebrew scene. Every time there is an update, the same lies and misinformation is spewed...

"Don't upgrade. You won't be able to run homebrew." Didn't a decrypter for 2.80 just get released??? Sony keeps updating and you keep hacking. Just upgrade and wait a few weeks for the next hack.

"Sony just releases updates to kill homebrew." Huh. If you can write homebrew to exploit a hole, then can't malicious software ALSO be written to exploit it??? If Microsoft knew about a hole but just left it open, you'd slam them. But if Sony knows about a hole and fixes it, they are a bad guy. Someday a virus will be written that bricks your PSP because you are using an older version of the firmware. When that happens, don't complain to Sony about weak security in their OS.

"There are no new features worth having." Fine. Personally, I've found the downloadable game demos, net browsing, rss feeds, etc. quite enjoyable. Looking forward to the GPS system and LocationFree player when I get my PS3.

Looking forward to 3.0

So to save all of those users who are wondering if the libtiff(Hello World) exploit is patched: it is.

And if you don't want to bother with this, then buy the modchip or use 1.00/1.50.

Sony is just gonna release another patch once devhook starts emulating 2.81 but oh well its how it goes I guess..

They made this 2.81 I think so that ppl who buy new or used psps will go to Sony's update site first thing and upgrade it to the newer version then kick themselves when they find out all about homebrew,ISOs,e tc.

Anyways I ain't probally ever gonna buy a PSP game agian. If I got $50 I'll spend it on another MS or a good bag of pot instead!

Sony ain't hurting from us 5% of psp owners who actually use ISO's and don't own the UMD...

It's good to hear that people actually apreciate the things they buy. All these homebew guys have no respect for the company that gave them the system to do all this stuff. Everyone knows that Sony is realeases updates to increase the security for the PSP and add little updates to the system, but you guys don't always have to bash Sony for doing that. And you homebrewers know that you shouldn't update if you want to countinue doing the things you are doing. Sony isn't forcing you to update your PSP's, but you bash them like they are. If you don't like Sony, I don't know why you guys buy thier products.

What do you mean sony isn't forcing us to update are you even thinking... Why would they even make the update!!! Every game that is new, that will come out will force you to upgrade or not play them. Every firmware update is bad news IMO. Why do you think they are holding off GTA VCS or the much anticipated psone emulator it's because every firmware keeps getting hacked. I wonder how long will this go on, I mean I don't care about homebrew and stuff im on 1.5 all im waiting for is the ps1 emulator after it comes out im gonna buy me a new psp

I mean, sure, Sony is trying to stop exploiting and getting people to upgrade. Theyre doing it for YOU, because you cant block iso's without blocking homebrew. Sony is trying to stop the downfall of the PSP. If everyone keeps pirating, then there would be no point in making games for the PSP. Then how are you gonna download iso's? Im a proud 1.5 user, and I do use iso's, but there the games I have. I dont like switching UMD's (my UMD drive door wont even open without a knife) so its perfectly legal to play iso's of games you already have. For instance, I have VCS pre-ordered, but once I get it, ill probably look for an ISO of it and store it somewhere safe. All im trying to say, if everyone keeps pirating, what else will there be to pirate? kthxbye lolz

but surely sony COULD stop the iso loaders and still let the homebrew scene in on the action..... if they put in as much effort as they do at stopping everything you CAN do with it

(all it takes is a little help from the guys they keep suing)

but "I THINK" they dont like the money being out of there hands....pity cos theres soooooo many great programers out there they need to employ.

i mean is it just me ive said it before is sony geting really lazy with ther updates? and if its to the point where a update is allready cracked before the us version comes out sony should just really give up on blocking homebrew and just alow i mean wats so bad about them allowing it aslong as they can block the iso loaders?

Wasnt the PS1 emulator supposed to be coming out around this time? I think a ps1 emulator would just slightly outweigh the greatness of "revised security issues". Don't you wish sony actually listened to what you had to say? Crap games and crap prices (especially UMD movies and sized-down game ports) and they try to stop the few things that actually save this near waste of 200 dollars. Rediculous.

The only reason in the first place tryed to prevent user created software to be played on the PSP is so we would not hit a piracy problem. But this has already occured, but now we are trying to prevent further customers resorting to homebrew.

For everyone saying, "Quit making fun of Sony! They brought you the PSP!" When I make fun of Sony, it's because they're being dumbasses such as these updates. I'm not saying, "Oh man ***** the PSP." I'm saying ***** Sony. And yes, quite a large difference. I think the PSP is awesome, when I get free *****. Sony is just making themselves look idiotic, who do they think they're fooling? Everyone knows damn well these updates are here to stop exploits and right now that is it. "Omg larger GB sticks!" Wow, sweet. If you can't use homebrew, do you really need 8 gigs of space? Sony is just pissed because they messed up and now they're trying to quickly cover their screw-ups with patches, if they wouldn't of done ***** like this in the first place, they wouldn't have to worry about piracy. We bought our PSP's, we'll do what we damn well please with them. I forget who said something along the lines of their car can go 120MPH, they're not allowed to drive that fast but their car can do it anyway, which is exactly how the PSP is, if the system is capable of such things, then it's fair game.

i hope the psp can emulate 2.8 or 2.81 in time for gta: vice city stories.... Assuming that it will contain a 2.8/2.81 update.

I feel that Sony is trying to pace the psp development. If Sony were to release something that can endanger the system (like homebrews and downgraders) like the hackers, more and more people will get bricked PSPs...u know what that means...

But if they have a better development team, they should be coming up wif more playable/downloadable games for us...more demos for example...it took them so long to release GOOD firmwares and free add-ons.
