It's Official: 2.81 Out Now |
Listed in: News Tags: DevHook, Japan, memory stick, Memory Stick Pro Duo, Sony
Ó
You can now lay all your speculations to rest. Sony has just released firmware 2.81. The update was made on September 7, 2006 (as some pointed out, it's ironically just right after the 2.80 Decrypter was made available) and YourPSP says the system software update included a patch that would address vulnerability in the system software. Naturally, it includes all features contained in previous software versions.
Sony Japan's website lists down the Memory Stick related problems that they've fixed. Translation from the Sony Japan's website here are those updates.
- With "ATRAC" files which have been protected in SonicStage and then saved to Memory Stick PRO Duo, the protection management data becomes corrupted, and become unable to be played back
- Memory Stick PRO Duo media which have been formatted from either the PSP or a Memory Stick formatter are recognized as unformatted media when connecting the PSP to a PC with the USB cable
If you ask us, all that Sony has done in the 2.81 release is that it has given us a choice. If you really, really and we mean really, need more than 4GB then by all means upgrade. YourPSP and Sony Japan is offering the download. Love your homebrew? Then don't.
Is it a good move by Sony? Well apparently not, cause we've just found out that the 2.80 decrypter works on 2.81. What good does that do for us? Well it could only mean that Sony's newest baby may soon be emulated via DevHook!
Thanks to everyone who took the extra time of tipping us about this update.

1)No this does not mean you can run an e-loader on 2.8(1)
2)No this has nothing to do with a downgrader for 2.8(1)
3)No this does not in any way help TA-082 users.
4)No there really is no point in using this upgrade, unless you have no interest in EVER running homebrew, because I'm going to bet that nobody's going to bother hacking 2.81. Still working on 2.0-2.71 and then maybe 2.8, and by then 3.0 will be out, and nobody will care about 2.81 anymore except the losers that where dumb enough to upgrade to it.

Homebrewers give themselves way too much credit.
These fixes are no different than a Windows update to fix a security vulnerability. They would be neglegent to their customers to NOT fix the problem. They really couldn’t care less if any 1.5er uses the upgrade or not.
And this release more than likely had absolutely nothing to do with the 2.8 decryption news, it's more than likely just a coincidence that it's the day after that news, and it just happens to be when it was ready to launch.
I would hardly say that Sony got owned. Find an exploit in 2.81 right off the bat, and then I'll agree that Sony got owned.
Just something to think about.

1 To fix the exploit (and it is fixed).
2 To prepare for the future Memory Sticks.
Are people not seeing the connection between this update and the upcoming download service?
This update enables the PSP to recognize sticks with more then 4GB capacity, but these sticks are not out yet. So that means we can expect sony to release sticks like 8GB, 16GB and 32 GB within some months. And why would people want those sticks you think? (maybe :) 1 word: PS1DOWNLADSERVICE! a playstation one game is around 350 MB so if you want around 15 games on your stick you'll need at least 5GB. So they are not really trying to make money with the upcoming PS1 service they will make money selling memory sticks. They probaly also don't even care if you should 'illegally' download ps1 games because more games equals more space needed. And according to some calculations I did they will earn even more money selling sticks then selling ps1 games for like 5$, heck if they would release the games for free they would make a fortune of people buying large sticks.
BTW 32GB is the max of Memory Stick Pro Duo.

sony had the memory allocation update sorted long ago imo, w8ing 2 use it as an excuse to update...
"And why would people want those sticks you think? (maybe :) 1 word: PS1DOWNLADSERVICE"
lol...1 word:ISOS
*puts on flameproof jacket*
not sure about this but if i had an 8gb stick and used a memory read to put on a new version of devhook ( if there will be one) that can emulate 2.81. i don't think it would have a problem opening it, i think it may have problems writing etc thou...had devices with problems like that in the past...at worst u can just fill it up so theres not 2 much free space.
Reply
Heck you'd finally have a use for that 32MB stick (unless devhook becomes too big with the new updates, but it fits on there now).
Throw nothing but devhook on there, use it to boot into 2.81, then once in 2.81, swap it out and throw in your 8GB stick. Not so difficult, just need to make sure that Devhook is also on the 8GB stick. Gonna need a card reader.

Whats the deal with that? There is no difference between 2.80 & 2.81 except 2.81 patched TIFF exploit and it messed up some games so they cant run.

i agree with how you say that we should be grateful for sony making psp.
but you are OBVIOSLY rich or somethin to ignore the fact that you can have AS MANY FREE *****ING GAMES THAT YOU WANT! I am poor and i enjoy the fact that i have access to free games i would have NEVER played because i dont have money like that to throw around.
but on the other hand, good for you that you do so well for yourself and make good income.
or even on another hand, you could just be another teenage prick whos trying to be cool by doing "the right thing"
GO TO HELL. that goes the same for all the rest of you *****s who say that we should not download iso's.

Everybody who downloads ISOs of games that they do not own is a pirate. Simple as that. If you download ISOs, good for you. Just don't try to justify your actions with stupid excuses.

The reasons:
- ISO use less battery (the umd access takes more battery than powering the memory card)
- ISO take no space (UMD x 6 is a lot, 1 card = nothing)
- ISO are like backups (You can't scratch ISO - can't really steal them)
I also would like the latest 2.8+ firmware because it allows to use video files without renaming them to their stupid name format.
All in all I am happy with the development that they can decrypt this.

"not everyone is a pirate as you say."
I meant that you are saying that not everyone is a pirate, and then I go on to say why there are good uses for it. We basically are saying the same thing.

everyone who backs up isos and uses it is not.
sure there expensive, but you dont have to disrespect the company who makes the psp. sony doesnt determine umd prices. the software devs decide how much they want to sell their own games for. sony releases the single greatest handheld device ever to hit shelves, and here you guys exploit the ***** out of it and then make fun of sony. i dont see you makin any of these. sony is tryin to protect the psp from downfall and corruption, maybe its a mistake blocking out whatever homebrew you like, but its protection from the "dreamcast". im a 1.5 user and i have isos of my own games which i do own because i respect the games that they make, im not a fatass obese american who sits on his ass all day complaining about how bad ***** is, i dont see you makin anything better either. and if you cant afford psp games, then you cant afford a psp. your obviously 12 then. get a job.

"Don't upgrade. You won't be able to run homebrew." Didn't a decrypter for 2.80 just get released??? Sony keeps updating and you keep hacking. Just upgrade and wait a few weeks for the next hack.
"Sony just releases updates to kill homebrew." Huh. If you can write homebrew to exploit a hole, then can't malicious software ALSO be written to exploit it??? If Microsoft knew about a hole but just left it open, you'd slam them. But if Sony knows about a hole and fixes it, they are a bad guy. Someday a virus will be written that bricks your PSP because you are using an older version of the firmware. When that happens, don't complain to Sony about weak security in their OS.
"There are no new features worth having." Fine. Personally, I've found the downloadable game demos, net browsing, rss feeds, etc. quite enjoyable. Looking forward to the GPS system and LocationFree player when I get my PS3.
Looking forward to 3.0

So to save all of those users who are wondering if the libtiff(Hello World) exploit is patched: it is.
And if you don't want to bother with this, then buy the modchip or use 1.00/1.50.

They made this 2.81 I think so that ppl who buy new or used psps will go to Sony's update site first thing and upgrade it to the newer version then kick themselves when they find out all about homebrew,ISOs,e tc.
Anyways I ain't probally ever gonna buy a PSP game agian. If I got $50 I'll spend it on another MS or a good bag of pot instead!
Sony ain't hurting from us 5% of psp owners who actually use ISO's and don't own the UMD...

but surely sony COULD stop the iso loaders and still let the homebrew scene in on the action..... if they put in as much effort as they do at stopping everything you CAN do with it
(all it takes is a little help from the guys they keep suing)
but "I THINK" they dont like the money being out of there hands....pity cos theres soooooo many great programers out there they need to employ.

But if they have a better development team, they should be coming up wif more playable/downloadable games for us...more demos for example...it took them so long to release GOOD firmwares and free add-ons.
