2011. This is the predicted deadline by former SCEE president Chris Deering. Deadline for what? Why, when we'll know who comes out as the winner for this next-gen's console race, that's what. Although, his forecast does not provide for a clear winner, as some may have hoped.According to the former Sony exec, both Sony and Nintendo will emerge as tied winners. If one would look at the current NPD numbers, it's fairly obvious that Nintendo is bringing home truckloads of bacon with its Wii and DS sales consistently settling on the top of the charts. How is Sony to catch up?
Well, Deering is of the opinion that the combined sales of the PlayStation consoles, particularly PS3, PS2 and PSP, will add up to around 240 million units by 2011. Meanwhile, Nintendo would have come up with the same number, only, they'd have pulled it off with only the Wii and the DS. Where's Microsoft's Xbox 360 in all this? He says they'll have a base of 40 million units.
Bold predictions, we say. And it's only a couple of years from now so it's not really that long before his forecast is proved or not. But for now, facts and numbers state what's clear: Nintendo, the alleged underdog in this leg of the console race, is certainly leading the pack, if it's numbers you're looking at. And in this race, really, it's not the graphics or console power that counts, it's the statistics.

I don't think so, by then [2011] the PS3 will have a slim version and be about the price of a current Wii or lower. So, the PS3 should sell about as fast a PS2 or the current Wii if not faster ($250 for a Blu-Ray Player).
They can drop the Wii's price at the drop of a hat as well...

The gaming industry is growing, but the gamers (dare I say ninty-casual gamers) who own the DS or PS2 and don't own the PS3 will not be buying it no matter what game they come out with..
It seems that guy is failing to recognize that the 360 has more love in the USA and/or he thinks it's a fad. But oh well, predicting sony units because of the BluRay player is okay and all, but ninty won't lose no matter what.
It's stupid that they are still counting the PS2 imo, he is counting last-gen's machine for overall sales for 2011.

The black wii looked absoluely stunning - but perhaps it wasn't family looking enough?
The silver ps3 - not the finger print/scratch magnet our current model so clearly is - but it didn't really look like $600. And what about the boomarang controller - looked awsome - but don't mess with a good thing right?
and that 360 - well, it's the same. huh. With all the great games and marketing no one really fell in love with the 360's looks. Perhaps it was just a little too much like a home-theatre-pc, or maybe it was just the beige casing that won't go away (despite the elite looking better).
If we had the black wii, we'd want white. If we have the silver ps3, we'd want black. If we had the beige 360... uhh, we'd buy faceplates and decalgirl skins. Anyway, with the exception of the last example (slightly) we always wants what we don't have and different sells (unless one person is different from another then hatred is involved.)

The wii has this console generation all buy sewn up. Nintendo has positioned themselves properly with the casual crowd, and is making strides with the "hardcore" gaming crowd. Moreover, as a previous poster stated, the xbox360 gets huge love in North America, and with sony's exclusives empire having virtually fallen and a better (albeit more expensive) online experience on the 360, Sony doesn't have a solid chance of winning this thing.
Sony could very well finish second to the wii in every territory outside North America, but they can't win this.
All this said, Sony should be happy. They've still managed to beat most analyst expectations following their horribly mismanaged launch and first year. This could all have gone very badly for Sony, and it's far from raining feces.
The Playstation brand has suffered tremendous damage at the hands of the PS3, but it's nothing that can't be fixed next generation.
All-in-all, other than the disgusting attach rate, i'm pretty damn impressed with what nintendo has done.
All I know is if I do buy a new console it wont be a PS3. Xbox360 is looking pretty nice to me, for now I'm happy with my PS2 and PSP.

It's well known that the intelligence rate of America is 1/3. What smart person really buys from Micro$oft, a company who can't make stable OS or hardware. People need to stay away from Micosucks products and use Better alternatives Like Linux Mac and PS3. Wii included if you feel that way. A PS3 is a supercomputer it'self and can play computer games so why are people running to Windoofs. It makes no sence other than the fact that People are stupid. Why wouldn't a PS2 gamer/owner move on to the PS3 when the sequel to big PS2 games (like GoW) is only for PS3.
I understand your confusion, but if you'd bothered to look at gamespot or ign and flip up the full list of wii games, there's things announced for pretty much every genre, even FPS(The Conduit) and RPGs(Tales of Syphonia).
The Wii could use more RPGs. My PS2 has got an epic backlog of them though, so I shouldn't run out yet :)

Also, why is everyone so cofident that ONE console has to win? I for one believe in a firendly coexistence of the PS3-Wii combo. ( sorry for that X360 fans, I just don't believe the X360 will last much longer.)
...the Wii-fad has to dry-out. Also, by the time 2011 hits a lot more people will have HDTV's (remember, a large part of the US market is going to discover in Feb 2009 that it makes a lot of sense just to get a new TV). So, Nintendo's cheapskate hardware mentality works for now, but eventually will look like the overpriced piece of electronic history it really is. That leaves 360 and PS3 to battle it out, and Sony still has that huge yet-to-upgrade PS2 market to tap. Plus, it's a natural selection for the HDTV-buyer on a budget since it's got Blu-ray. Let's say MS finally got wise and stuck a BD player into the 360 between now and 2011. You might more likely see a 360/PS3 tie. I think the Wii will cap this year, especially if Home on PS3 turns out as good as it sounds ...and if MS and Sony release new their constantly-rumored new motion-sensitive controllers to make them more Wii-like.

The Wii will die out as its only for kids and grandmothers (Most gamers who only have a Wii will come to their senses and realize that in comparison to PS3, their are little to no good hardcore games for the system.)
Also the Wii will really begin to show its age once the "motion fad" dies down and people begin to realize that it is just replacing button presses with "waggle" gestures.
This is what happened to me. I was a LOYAL fan of Nintendo. When I finally realized that they werent making any games "for me" I gave up on them, went pro Sony, and I have never been so pleased with a console.
It will happen to you to. This is the era of HD gaming, HD movies, Lossless sound, etc. Nintendo is a stepping back in this generation. PS3 will reign supreme. It has to, for the sake of gaming.
People are buying up Wii's vast selection of landfill media (How many 9.99 sports re-hashes can the Wii support?)
Once you game in HD with titles like MGS4, Assassins Creed, Uncharted, GTAIV etc, it's really hard to enjoy a sluggish, underpowered Wii game.

By your logic we should be playing nothing but PC games. Since they've been HD long before consoles, they've had uncompressed textures and sounds and all that. And you know what? It didn't stop "weaker" systems like the PS2, the Wii, the DS from doing well at all.
You must have little between your ears if you honestly think the PS3 is going to win this generation. We're almost half way in and it's still last. Going off the current rate of sales and growth it would take Sony 6 years to overtake Nintendo *IF* they no longer sold a single Wii.

Who knows what they will call it (720?) but it will definitely come out by 2011, maybe even by 2010. Microsoft is going to milk the 360 for every penny but the fact that it doesn't have a bluray drive will increasingly become a bigger issue. Not only will more people want a bluray player but more games for the 360 will have to be multidisked because they cant fit on a dvd. I have a PS3 and I use it more for watching movies than playing games.

Wii is a fad, but still a big child's toy. That is where it will stay after it dies out with real gamers. The PS3 has no decent exclusives... (I own one with 2 games... 2!). The 360 has the largest game base and best online experience (own this as well... I have about 35-40 games for it). I mean honestly. PS3 is getting pretty late in the console war for it to have such a lack of exclusives and the 360 keeps bring the heat.

Just so everyone knows, and unless he provides a link then I will, this guy denied Sony had a problem with their PS1 and PS2 lasers and outright denied the class action lawsuit filed against them. But seriously now - is there anyone out there who actually thinks the PS3 is going to overtake? It's shot it's load with MGS4 and still didn't manage to have that large an impact on specific regions. But as I always say you can like something *and* have it fail on the market. Hell my fave last gen console was the GC and it bombed terribly!
But I suppose fanboys can't see past that and will vehemently claim their fave console will be the best in every possible way.
And to Dman. "for the sake of good games", you don't mean forgettable unoriginal titles like Warhawk, Lair, Uncharted... Do you? All these games we were "supposed to wait for" that would make the PS3 the best system ever? Metacritic agrees with me too. If you want good games you buy a 360 (which I don't have or am likely to buy) since it has more higher rated games, or even the Wii has more exclusive higher rated games.
This 360 hate is getting old. its a great system, with lots of great games. Online gaming is second to none. when you turn on the 360 you feel like your in a community.
360 has SOME of the best graphics seen this year. And system problems are almost non existent. (Finally)
Many articals ive read claim the 360 is a waist of time and the PS3 is the right choice. but Ive had my PS3 for a year now and the only games worth keeping are Uncharted, MGS3, and Resistance. all other PS3 games are also one 360 and I get them on that system because its more fun on 360. (Playing online w/friends, and Achivements).
PS3 just added achivments but since making friends online is so difficult, and im the only one I know with a PS3, achivments on the PS3 is not as much fun. (I like competition.)

became non-exclusive I stopped wanting a PS3. Between FFxiii's and Bioshock's flip, I'm reluctant to believe any exclusivity rights anymore...
There will totally be a few games the PS3 will get that might be somewhat enticing... but nothing worth me spending another few hundred bucks on to be able to play when I can barely finish the games I currently have. Not to mention the money for upgrading my kinda lackluster LCD TV so I can actually take adv of the BR and HD.
How strange... I'm likely (since I don't know you) a more hardcore gamer than you and here I am... content with what the Wii offers. I loved games so much that I even studied them at college and university and now work in the field. So I work and play with games, har har! If that doesn't make me a real gamer I wonder what you consider does.
Irregardless of system specs and "kiddy factor", if you're mature enough to not care what other people think of you then you can see what a good console it is. Infact I'd say I've had much more fun on the Wii than any other console. Not PC though, that's the ultimate hardcore gaming platform.
"Light gaming system", right. When you have near impossible games like Galaxy, Prime 3 and Brawl... Makes it hard to take other points seriously when you mess up on something like that.
But I quite agree. The 360 has more games in more genres with higher ratings. Realistically it's the better system compared to the PS3 since they both set out to achieve similar goals. It's also a hell of a lot cheaper (£189 compared to £300 for PS3), costs less to run from an energy standpoint (but is the same if you add Live) and doesn't force you into unnecessary tech that bumps the price up.
The 360 is pretty good but seeing that the major titles get ported to PC I'm just going to stick with that.
However the 360's controller is pretty much the best traditional controller I've ever held. Unlike the PS3's concave triggers and wrongly located dpad/analogue stick. Have one hooked up to my PC.

Endless delays on HOME intergration can't be fun either.
It doesn't make it any less of an amazing console, especially when you're essentially getting a "free" blu-ray player in the package.
All I can say is that with the PS3's superior hardware, its a shame that it isn't outperforming the 360 on the level that Sony claimed during the pre-launch hype.

People actually do believe the ps3 will win the console race. It's simple really. By the time the next Microsoft console ships (next year or two) and people realize how underpowered and overhyped their Wii is the PS3 will be in its prime. It will continue to get support long after the 360 and Wii are gone due to Blu-ray and standard HDD. I'd be ultimately surprised if by 2012 the ps3 hasn't sold 100 million units.
Also, Lair did suck but Warhawk and Uncharted are phenomenal underrated games. If you actually played them you'd know too.
If Sony really wants to beat 360 then they need to make the PSN better than the XBL but still have it 4 free...PS3 is already on the rise due to Blu-ray and some exclusive games. PS3 and 360 have equal amounts of good games. XBL is the only real deal that 360 has left(no offense 360 fans but u probably already know this but too in love with 360 to care) and if the PSN beats or ties with XBL then Sony would definitely dominate
Really you all must consider how much of an impact Blu-Ray is to the PS3, then there is the HDTV factor, along with the Sony/PlayStation brand/what they are known for, and finally the 3rd Party Support.

In terms of the console wars, this gen has been really disappointing. The Wii is not what I thought nintendo had in mind, but I guess you can only be ontop for so long. The 360 is disgracefull. If the RROD wont get you, something else will. Now what was a 33% failure rate has been brought to a disapointing 17%. And then there's the PS3, the one system that really is the clear winner but people seem to be afraid of the future which willbe the demise if SONY is ever out of the game. SONY is always releasing the High-end machine That sets the stadards for the next gens.

Sony is the only company really making an innovative effort on their console right now. Microsoft is just focused on stealing third-party exclusives and Nintendo keeps rehashing the same Mario/Zelda/Mario Party games all over again. Sony is actually taking the time and spending the money to develop completely new games and franchises, and trying to bring the gaming industry to the next level.

Some of you guys are very overcome with the concept that there is a war going on between video game consoles. Its a product... you buy it.. you use it.. you stop using it.. thats it. All it takes is 1 small comment about being against the PS3 or the 360, and all the kids who forgot to take their Prozac start b*tching away. If someone starts talking sh*t on your console or has a different opinion than you, why get your panties in a bunch over it? In fact, why act like you're wearing panties in the first place?
Then there's those kids who literally ANALYZE every word of your comment; they even respond with a detailed list of all the statements you made in that comment. And below each of your statements is a reason why they think that statement is wrong. Where do people get time for that?
It's true that I'm a 360 fan, but it's also true that I respect everyone, Sony & 360 fans alike.. Many of the fans on both sides are chill, laid-back, and respectful. It's like each console has its good fans and its bad fans, but in the end, there's nothing more funny than watching the bad fans have their little slapfights on sites like these.

I have all three consoles and I play the 360 way more than the other 2. Just about every game on the Wii sucks except for 1st party titles. The online component of PS3 is crap compared to the 360 and no one ever uses a mic, and there are only about 5 good exclusive titles for PS3 and why would I by a mutiplatform title on PS3 with the online being as inferior as it is. I have 20 games for my 360 and 5 for my PS3.
a supercomputer that you can't do anything with is just a overpriced paperweight. Maybe in a year or 2 PS3 might be better, but for now I definately prefer my 360. Also mine has never red ringed on me so it's not really an issue to me.
I bought Uncharted and Warhawk off of Ebay. Uncharted was kind of fun but it didn't blow my mind also it only took 8 hours to beat and Warhawk which I really wanted to like ,I even downloaded the expansions as soon as I got it, turned out to have *****ty feeling controls and bad graphics. Seriously halo 3 destroys every game on PS3 except MGS4. I really want to like the PS3 since it cost me 500 bucks, but so far nothing has really impressed me. I do like remote play with pixeljunk Eden on my PSP though.
when reading some of the comments in some of the posts..sometimes I really wonder... if some of these kids get paid if PS3 tops the sales for that week. Nah.. no way that is true but sure as hell it looks so darn like that.

You can buy a nice 1080p Bravia set from Sony to go with your PS3. If Nintendo was selling TV's to go with their Wii, they would have a nice 480p SD tv. LOL. I dont know why I find that so funny!! haha.

I just love how you say that your rivals (xbox 360 fans) are the only ones whoever do anything wrong. As if Sony fans are all perfect.
It takes two to argue my friend. You can't tell me that you have never instigated a fight before. Your just as bad as any other fanboy, not better, nor worse.
Of course Sony fans are all going to agree on an "anti-xbox" comment and of course all xbox fans will agree to an "anti-sony" comment. But to those who have some balls, some balls who have actually dropped, know that I respect you.
Here is some wisdom for everyone: whatever console you support, know that no one gives a flying f*ck about your opinion. I don't expect anyone to give a damn about my opinion, so I don't say my opinion on what console I support. But to all the naysayers and haters out there, understand that you can continue to whine and whine and whine until the end of time. But all of your comments will fall far short of having any impact on someone in the long run. Your wasting your time.
