PSP FW 3.60 - Image 1

PSP Fanboy got hold of a redesigned PlayStation Portable unit. So what now? Well, the good guys over at the said site tinkered around with it and learned a couple of very important things: the new handheld is running on FW 3.60 and it carries a USB charge function.

We guess we don't have to explain that in detail to you guys. Aside from the already mentioned, there's also a UMD Cache feature that will be used to increase the load speed of loaded video game UMDs.

In relation to the new video-out functionality, the new PSP unit also has a feature that allows users to change the type of TV that is connected to the handheld as well as settings for screensavers. PSP Fanboy connected their unit to a TV set and found that games are bordered, rendered at 480x272, and for progressive scan only.

Of course, we believe that FW 3.60 has a lot of other features that are yet to be announced and discovered. The most important among these for you, we believe, is how tough its security system is going to be. We have a feeling we'll find out soon enough.

» Sweet

You can't diss a refreshed hardware. period.

Slim is ok, tv output is good but allready done, better battery (order it from divineo.com), no infrared.. common! I love to freakout people with IRShell haha

The new PSP will be hacked like all machines. If Sony can access its inner memory, then anyone will with time. Its a simple fact that hackers are always going to be there. The community is building strong. I my self am addicted to this piece of black goodness

Dark Alex wasn't the only person behind all the mods. He was and always will be a legend to the PSP, but lets not forget all other devs. Small or big everyone has an impact on the PSP community. Even the "..first post!.." retarded people to anyone simply giving out ideas. As long as there is attention related to homebrew, there will be hacks.

Keep up the good work people,

» hmm

well if the 1st gen psp's cant output to a tv then I will be seriously pissed off cuz sometimes it gets real annoying to play psp cuz it gets uncomfortable!

I am not too impressed with the redesign, its the same exact thing, the only diff is a better battery, firmware enhancements (cuz of 3.60) and thin and slimmer, WOW. not enough to get me to buy it cuz my big psp still pwnz :)

» OMG FIRST!

FIRST FIRST FIRST!!!!!! YOU MAKE ME PROUD OF BEING A FIRST POSTER!!!!!!!!! !!!

by manaox2 - 2007-07-13 07:53
» Can so.

Here is how I diss refreshed hardware in a 3 point outline.

1. TV-output to progressive only? I dont own a HD progressive scan tv that costs at least $200 for the 720p that is required to play low-quality rendered 480x272 psp games. Why dont I buy a PS3 while their at it? Sticking with Remotejoy.

2. Slimmer and lighter is a plus, but did they have to make it look like a cheap toy?

3. You can't hack missing hardware. Ahman is probably never coming out of retirement now that there is no infrared. There goes all Ir keyboard functionality setting that to square one and NOW they announce a partnership to create a major MMO?

There are pluses to this. Slimmer, lighter, USB-charge function, uses less power, better UMD drive function, possibly less prone to breaking wireless switch, better caching with more RAM. Just because you throw in these things doesn't mean that I can't get workarounds for my current psp without lossing my previous peripherals like batteries and custom firmware using less then thirty dollars.

Heres how: RemoteJoy, buy a USB charging cable, 2600 maH afterstock battery, use an ISO loader to speed up cache. Now thats not quite the same, but it definately knocks the value of the cheap remake down a good bit especially knowing that possibly its best features like the RAM caching and the TV-out don't have the same impact without having the best games and may require a good amount of hacking before the general person can make use of them.

» MIGHT AS WELL CHUCK YOUR PSP IN THE GARBAGE!

So it looks like $ony will be FORCING us to buy their newer and upgraded PSP v2 if we want to continue receiving firmware updates...

How will Firmware 3.60 work on existing PSP v1? What will happen to all those options? Will there even BE a Firmware 3.60 for the OLDER PSP's (v1) that doesn't include these options? Probably not!

Sony has admitted defeat... Forcing us to either live with the fact they no longer support our beloved homebrew enabled PSP v1 or to go buy a new PSP v2 Slimmer, Lighter, Non-Homebrewable... $250.... again, Just so we can continue to receive OFFICIAL $ony Firmware updates?

WTF! Thanks a LOT $ony!

by .. - 2007-07-13 08:09
» ..

I say $250 by time you spend $200+tax on the console, then buy all new accessories since it doesn't look like the remote and headphone jack are next to each other anymore, and the battery is now different so if you want an external battery charger (like the official sony one) then that's another $25 and etc etc it adds up in NEW accessories that are unneeded because we already had them for PSP v1 and now they're now longer compatible!

by ankito - 2007-07-13 08:11
» OMG

The psp homebrew scene is dead, might as well just buy a DS now since it may be the next growing homebrew scene (well, at least they have a N64 emulator better than daedalus and the homebrew can use touch screen, Quake with keyboard on the bottom screens seems nice :))

My concern is whether the hardware changes in PSP2 will be a significant enough that fw1.50 will be incompatible with it. I'm a little doubtful, but then 1.50 was never meant to run on TA-82, and we saw how well that stopped homebrew. I won't lose any sleep over this. :)

» its really all about how u play

While they both have pros and cons, it depends upon what kind of user that the player is that determines whether or not the new psp is going to be worth anything. if it matters to u that it can charge through the mini USB port and that u can play movies on a tv, and its thinner, then get it. those are the only two noteworthy features, both of which are not (in my opinion) necessary. my psp battery fully charged still gives me 6.5 - 7 hours of gameplay. i really dont need anymore and if i wanted more i would buy and extended battery.

if anything, the newer psp is only goin to be good for the battery and the new xmb features which will obviously not be available on all (as some have dubbed it) PSP v1 because all firmware for that one has been discontinued. my psp now has some of the best homebrew from the DAX 3.40-OE to daedalus. im sure that as of right now my psp can do more things than the new psp will be able to. in addition to this, a thinner psp isnt really gonna change my experience that much other than the fact that is will fit in my pocket better. and as for the "faster" PSP v2; we, the "homebrew community", have already maxed out our cpu speed long ago. therefore i wont be one of the people who will probably wait inline overnight to get something that i pretty much already have.

although im not gonna lie, the star wars bundle was quite enticing. i do kinda want the most badass of jedi on the back of my psp...

by majorbb100 - 2007-07-13 10:42
» im very disapointed

ok im jus flat out sad. first off why does sony hate homebrew so much. i mean you would think they would want something like homebrew. homebrew is something people love, sony doesnt have to pay a cent for it, and it will help them sell more units. But i can understand why they hate ISO's because that means they wont sell UMDs. But i mean why dont they give this new psp more RAM, no security against homebrew, another analog stick, 8 gigabytes of memory, keep the memory card slot for extra memory, give it a camera, and let the system sell itself. Personally i dont know why sony hates homebrew so much and im not trying to be *****y but if anyone has a reason please tell me. i mean i look at my psp and see something with a ton of potential and i dont know why sony cant see the potential that me and millions of others see....

» The reason Sony hates homebrew

Put yourself in Sony's shoes. Let's say you make this sweet ass portable handheld, with the best graphics capabilities on the market and are selling games for 30 bucks a pop roughly. Now let's say you get a bunch of teenagers who figure out how to do emulation on there. Then as time goes on, the emulation gets better, and finally an ISOloader is put in with firmwares. Not to mention the slew of other homebrew original games.

The bottom line is that...

HOMEBREW DETERS SOFTWARE SALES

HOMEBREW DETERS SOFTWARE SALES

HOMEBREW DETERS SOFTWARE SALES

HOMEBREW DETERS SOFTWARE SALES

HOMEBREW DETERS SOFTWARE SALES

HOMEBREW DETERS SOFTWARE SALES

HOMEBREW DETERS SOFTWARE SALES

That is why Sony doesn't like it and doesn't want it. Either way, 3.60 will be cracked soon enough. Dark Alex may have left, which of course yeah is a huge blow to the homebrew community, but all hope is not lost.

Nobody cares about SH** homebrew games that have an uncountable number of bugs and horrible graphics and gameplay.

The main reason you guys like cfws is because u can download ISOs. Dont even deny. What kind of an idiot would shell out 30 bucks per game and then back it up and play it when you can just quickly download it?

Actually, the DS Lite does have a brighter screen, as the original DS supported only 2 lighting modes, on and off, the DS Lite supports off, low, medium and high, and the Flashme custom firmware cannot add this feature to a old DS, even with firmware taken from a DS Lite.

» Original PSP tv out possibility

I have a sneaking suspicion that TV out may be possible on the original PSP. If you notice the tv out / headphone socket on the bottom of the PSP lite, you will notice that the slotted connecter has 6 contacts. Now check your PSP's headphone connector and observe the same slot. Yes its half the size, but count how many contacts there are. This port has been used as a serial port in the past for DIY GPS hardware and also head sets (among other uses ive seen on this site). I think with a little time and creativity, a smarty here will be able to figure it out, or it will just be a matter of a firmware upgrade and an specific cable for the original PSP!

» Lost Sales

Here's the problem with the numbers they give you on the news.

Let's say that they can determine that a $50 game has been downloaded about 20,000 times.

They will say that they lost $1,000,000 in sales to piracy.

There's a huge flaw in that logic though.

Of those 20,000 downloaders, you'd be lucky if 100 of them would have actually bought the game. That's $5,000 in sales lost.

So yes piracy hurts game, and software sales, but don't buy into the numbers they throw around in the media, they are extremely errant.

I wish people would stop crying about "homebrew". It's not really about that, as most "homebrew" games are about the quality of lousy flash games. It's about piracy - both of PSP game and of older system games via emulators.

Sales of PSP game are horrible. Maybe it's not piracy, maybe it's just people not liking them. But Sony has to do something to eliminate the piracy factor to at least see if it boost software sales. Otherwise the PSP is dead. It's already dying, with 3rd parties concentrating elsewhere, and even skipping previously profitable franchises (Like NCAA Football, no 08 version from EA)

It's not about piracy, it's about freedom to do whatever we want with the unit we buy.

You don't see Microsoft placing security measures on Windows to stop people from pirating games, that's entirely up to the game makers, which isn't the case on PSP.

By unlocking the PSP's complete potential ( Which is NOT Free games LOL ) it's complete and utter freedom to do with your PSP as you wish.

Of course if you wish to deprive game developers of their well deserved income, that's entirely your choice. The truth is, many of us would never even consider buying the game in the first place, because we cannot afford it.

In reality, if I was filthy rich, I would still support the revolution, whilst perhaps buying EVERY UMD TITLE, just to support developers. ( well maybe not every, but u get the idea. )

GTA LCS, MGS PO, VP: LENNETH, IMPORTED TALES OF PHANTASIA, FF1 & 2. All my games are in great condition except GTA : LCS the UMD casing is broke i can take out the dvd and everything. sony should redesign or replace the casing free of charge cuz the pisses me off. It better not happen when i get castlevania chronicles: dracula X when it comes out. after i buy it im going to back it up and play it off the memory stick. plus the load times are extremly fast for off the memory stick. i am proud of the community for how far it has come today because it gave me a chance to relive so many classics and since i am still a DOS user i still have many games to play and im hoping the next release for the dosbox for the psp fully supports all low level apps like testdrive and might and magic and tapper.

» Switch Motherboards?

Can you switch the motherboards in the two? Will you still get the benefits of the new one?

» hmmm...

wouldnt it be cool if when the psp2 came out (im not talking about the slim peace of *****) if sony stoped blocking homebrew on the origional psp. It would be cool and wouldnt effect them because no one would be buying many origional psp games anyway

» UMD Video Sales will go up!

cmon think about it. Now u will get to watch movies and replace the DVD player with the new psp. Instead of bunching together just to watch a movie and hearing the low volume, now u could watch in even in a plasma tv. Now if this psp gets hacked, then it is better cuz u get to do everything. I would be awesome to play Marvel VS Capcom on the CPS2PSP on my projector. Hey will multiplayer work? Tha would even be way better.

» Why Sony H8's homebrew

THE BEST SITE FOR ISOs IS www.espalpsp.com EVEN IF ITS IN SPANISH U JUST HAV TO GET A DICTIONARY OR AN TRANSLATION WEBSITE AND U GET ANY ISO OR CSO

^^^^This is why sony hates homebrew.^^^^

Also Dark Alex may have left but he wasn't the first to crack the psp, he's just the one who stuck with it the longest and did it the fastest, probably because he had way too much time on his hands. No better way to get rich mind you, sony offers him a 7 figure payment to close up shop, I'd take it too, then start under a different name.

Sony's also happy, they've practically sold every copy of the worst game ever made this decade, made the profit, and stalled the homebrew community for the future, score, score, score, plus new hardware coming out, they just delivered the 1-2 punch and it WILL take the homebrew community a little while to recover, this happened before when gta lcs was patched, remember?

BTW, to that DS fanboy out there, the homebrew community is so small for the ds because the system is so small, concept wise I mean, the psp is flat out the better system, thats why the homebrew community is so large, the psp is so much more powerful than sony allows for because nearly a quarter of its resources are designated to security chacks and routines.

» NO

NO!!! the hardware will be different, completely, requiring different bios settings and drivers, which will be stored in the onboard chipsets, just like with computers. also, the port additions and wire trailing will be different if they add usb charging, cache, probably a processor upgrade, it will probably run on 2 or 2.5 volts, throwing another curve ball at mod chippers, etc etc etc

» Don't buy this new PSP

I already have 2 old style PSPs, and there's nothing wrong with them. $ony's just trying to give people a reason to give up homebrew. What good is TV out if you still have to use the PSP as the controller?

At least with the $120 PSP2TV mod kit you can plug a PS2 controller into your PSP and use it like a console.

» Wow nice TV Out

WTF, the TV out only uses the native 480x272 (or whatever it is..) on TV, with borders. Thats seriously horrible. Why would someone plug their PSP into their TV just to get the same size on the TV?
