IGN Reviews Daxter

Following the news of an early release for Daxter, and the availability of the two level Gamestop demo, it's obvious Sony has a lot of faith in the furry orange rodent, and it would seem IGN believes that faith was well placed. In a three page review, IGN decreed Daxter worthy of an outstanding score of 9.0, particularly exciting considering IGN's recently bolstered rating system to get tougher on games. Here are some of the more interesting bits from the review:

Daxter's movement ties directly into his animation set, and this too is rather phenomenal. Every facet of his being moves in some way during every action; from his ears flopping a bit while he runs to his tail wagging to and fro as he scurries about, Daxter's animation set is on-par with his own on the PlayStation 2, which is to say it's some of the best in the industry.

One of my favorite areas of the game is a train station sequence where you need to hop from train to train as they speed along, dodging obstacles while picking up Precursor Orbs as you go. It's cool from a gameplay perspective but it's also a visually exciting scene as well.

Being able to save anywhere is also important because there aren't really individualized "levels" in the game per se, as the entire world is connected and streams as you roam about. Indeed, Daxter is essentially load time-free once you're in the game.

By collecting Precursor Orbs throughout the game, you'll unlock dreams that Daxter can "partake" in by sleeping. Each of these mock some pop culture film, from the Matrix to Indiana Jones to Lord of the Rings, and they're worth a chuckle or two.

IGN goes on to give credit to the excellent sound design, amazingly PS2 like visuals, and brilliant level design. If they've got one complaint it's that the story isn't quite as in depth and involved as its console cousin's. Kudos to the team at Ready at Dawn for bringing this great title to the PSP, if it wasn't already on your wish list mark it down for March 14th. If you're not entirely sold be sure to check out the trailer video and Gamestop demo.
