Hollywood is starting to pull away from PSP UMD movie format. One of the studio executives said that despite the number of sales that Sony is claiming, UMD movies sell next to nothing. Two major studios namely Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Paramount Pictures have stopped releasing movies on UMD while others like 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Buena Vista Home Entertainment are thinking of the idea of cutting back and slashing release schedules.
Retailers are also shrinking the amount of shelf space for UMD movies. There are even rumors that Wal-mart is about to throw the whole shelf entirely.
They pointed out PSP is a game player and not a movie player because of the inability to connect the gadget to the TV sets for big-screen viewing. They hope that PSP format is going to be reinvigorated with next-generation capability that may include living-room television playback.
