PS3 PSP - Image 1Given the economic standing of the gaming industry, developers laying people off, and their own sales declining, Sony keeps a stiff upper lip and keeps it smiling.

The PS3 is still in positive momentum, with 190,000 units sold, boasting a 90% growth year-to-date. IThe 30 new titles in October sold 2.3 million units of software. The PSP is still doing pretty good too, remaining a popular choice for mobile entertainment, selling 193,000 units last month.

For Sony, the October decline isn't so bad. Apparently, the clouds are full of silver lining, especially considering that the holidays are coming, and that they're enjoying consistent momentum.

» Only 2.3 million units of software for 30 games?

Gears of War 2 sold over 2 million in the first 3 days and that was just one game. I like my PS3 but Sony shouldnt be bragging if all they sold was 2.3 million copies of 30 different games. When I look at the top ten most rented games on Gamefly the only non 360 game is Resistance 2 and I bet if that game came out on the 360 at the same time more units would be sold for the 360 version. I have to admit I use my PS3 more for watching movies than for playing games.

» You're not getting the point

Sony's sale rate was boasted while Xbox360 sale rates has been declining. Yes, even though Sony sells less system then xbox, it continues to increase in sale while the xbox360 is declining in sale.

» You aren't seeing the ENTIRE picture...

After my rant about the decline of bluray sales I really don't have what it musters to just repeat myself.

here is the true-ism of Sony's less than panicked behavior. In a nust shell (like I said I have already ranted) Sony equipment and products are PROPRIETARY. Unless you cow tail to their whims you don't get to play.

Because they hold the cards to THEIR game systems and software they feel that they can charge whatever they want. Call it a bit of economic revenge for the Betamax descention.

Now, because they feel that people will spend $600 for a game console, they charge it. knowing that they willl only sell at best 1 unit for every 2, 3 or 4 units that the other guys will. The trick is, their are already getting 3 or 4 times the original value. Theoretically, in their mish mash of book keeping, they aren't loosing anything. Especially if they continue to reap the rewards of bloated lease on software.

The Xbox 360 shows a decline because of 2 things. 1. They ARE loosing a few sales. Its getting close to Christmas, so little Joey and Sally will just have to behave and stop their whining till Christmas morning. All of the sudden their sales go through the roof, but not until after they (generalizing... Microsoft) have fandango-ed a tax write off for the loss of sales in the 4th quarter.

And 2. The market is close to being saturated with the XBox 360. If there are 20 million homes in the US and 65% of them have the XBox, sales might start to slide a bit. It's not the end of the earth. These guys know that.

What? Microsoft just going to close the doors after the XBox dips to 3 units a week? Don't think so chuckles... New game platform time. kudos though, because it will still play all your older games as well as the new and improved ones. While Sony sits there and still tries to pawn off a $600 game machine and Microsoft releases a comparable unit that starts at half that.

THAT is what you're not seeing. Greed on the behalf of Sony. Their sales didn't "boasted" (I.e. boosted) because the XBox fell. They have merely been consistent.

Sony isn't the root of all evil though ( I reserve that for X-mas and coffee tables) they have just been the same victims of the greed virus as the rest of the bloated fat bastard companies that have taken a caviar ride on the consumer.

THAT'S what you need to see. THAT'S what you need to GET...

Lesson done...
