Greenpeace: Sony is greenest console manufacturer, Nintendo uncommunicative

A new report from the environmental group Greenpeace reveals that Sony is the "greenest" of all three console manufacturers.

The group's toxics campaigner Iza Kruszewska particularly praised Sony for its take-back recycling program for all their products (the eCycling centers).

Kruszewska goes on to talk about Microsoft, saying that they are "just getting on board with the environment.":

TheyÂ’ve just hired a sustainability team, and we are seeing movement from Microsoft with its 360 console, but the company had started from a very low base.

[...] But really, they have it so easy because they only make two core hardware products Â– the 360 and the Zune Â– they should really be way ahead. But they are coming on board for sure.

Nintendo comes in at last place in the green race, not particularly because they're the least "green", but because of their lack of communication with Greenpeace. Kruszewska explains that they barely disclose any of their practices. Still, Greenpeace provides reasons to question Nintendo's practices:

Nintendo does have a target to cut absolute emissions by 2 percent each year, but they themselves said they didnÂ’t meet that, and I understand that their emissions actually increased by 6 percent when their sales began to shoot up in 2007.

They also note that Nintendo has no environmental division, and that they have no take-back policies anywhere in the world except where legislation demands it. When asked about this, Nintendo replied, according to Kruszewska:

They said that their products donÂ’t create waste becauseÂ… people hang onto them! ItÂ’s a very inadequate response, and IÂ’m surprised a serious company like Nintendo would even respond that way.

So, the bottom line is, Nintendo IS NOT in last place, they are just not speaking with "Greenpeace". That's a pretty ridiculous comment to make.

If Greenpeace meant a damn thing to anyone, their standards would be what matters. But they aren't. So they don't.

Now, if we could get some REAL FACTS about how green Nintendo is, that would be something to talk about. Who cares if a company doesn't talk to another company about their "green"?

You know what's funny?

- The Wii uses up LESS power than the Gamecube.

- The Wii will take up substancially less landfill space than either the Xbox 360 or PS3, even tho it nearly outsells the both of them combined worldwide.

- Nintendo was the first company to make their portable game system's battery rechargeable by default, and it's still user accessible, so it can be easily replaced/recycled. Compare that to Apple, who's yet to release a single consumer device with that capability, meaning many people will just throw the whole thing out when the battery stops working because it seems cheaper than paying the replacement fee.

And Nintendo's the LEAST green? No, Greenpeace, you *****ing hypocrytes, Nintendo's done more for the environment than your lazy asses will ever manage.

Hey, remember that one time someone found a way to turn waste products into sustaneable fuel and you had their backs? Oh right, you didn't even mention them. Ever. ***** you.

Seriously, these are the guys that got DDT banned and now 200 million Africans are dead/dying of malaria.

And now they want people to listen to them about their standards on "green" companies? Greenpeace doesn't want to save the world, they just want everyone back to shivering in a cave so that the "environment" will be honkey-dorey.

Uh... No. Whilst part of what you said is true Apple DO offer consumer products with replaceable battery - their MacBook range. Prosumer products do too with the MacBook Pro and MBA.

And also most old handhelds used replaceable AA batteries.

Nintendo machines use less power. What do Greenpeace want, the same number of PS3 systems sold as the Wii? Eating up all that power?

Also in Europe ALL their packaging is paper based and not shrink-wrapped like the US, and all the MS and Sony products here. More card - better for recycling.

they go around complaining to these companys, but you dont see them walking, they waste the fuels they try looking like their concerned about, its just a money marketing compaign. their a waste of time and only adding to the problem not even slightly solving it, stop your winging at people who are doing exactly the same as you and p.s. its proven that global warming is a myth so get over yourselves
