Green light back on: Jack Thompson Debate to go on at SGC09

Jack Thompson - Image 1The July 4th SGC09 debate between anti-gamer, former Miami lawyer Jack Thompson and gamer/ attorney Mark Methenitis is all set and raring to go, despite the hump on the road yesterday morning, nearly resulting into Thompson's cancellation from the event. Reportedly, Thompson had several complaints to event host Screw Attack outlined below:
  • he objected to a one- or two-line introduction ("I have never been introduced with 1 or 2 sentences.  Nobody can be introduced in that fashion...")
  • he objected to a user-created parody video posted (and since removed) on the Screw Attack site; Thompson may have believed the video, "Questions Not to Ask Jack Thompson" at SGC," was official Screw Attack content
But that's not all, so it seems. GamePolitics was unwittingly made witness to the preparations chaos that the committee is going through because of the back and forth of demands from Mr. Thompson. Recounts GP:

As recently as this morning, however, Thompson demanded that a post by a Screw Attack user be removed. While it was not taken down, the author, who was also behind the parody video that Thompson found offensive, e-mailed the disbarred attorney a lengthy apology; that seemed to satisfy Thompson.

Next, Thompson e-mailed Skistimas a "proposed text" to be used as his introduction at the debate. The 12-sentence intro mentioned his 2008 lifetime disbarment very briefly, referring to it as "illegal" and blaming the loss of his law license on "lawyers for Take-Two, the makers of the Grand Theft Auto games."

GP asked Skistimas whether the introduction would actually be used at SGC09. Skistimas told us, "I have yet to review his intro but Jack and I will work together to find an intro that fits both his needs and the time format of the debate at SGC."

A conference call between Thompson and the Screw Attack team planned for noon today was canceled when the parties decided in late morning that the debate was back on and Thompson was satisified.

This debate should be entertaining, at the very least.

i could understand why he doesn't want kids to play it but if the parent thinks their child is capable of handeling the graphic nature of the videogame then why does he not let them...the parent is the main role in the childs life so they should and i emphasise SHOULD know how there child acts if they play those types of games and also its taking away freedom of thought by not letting dev's express there minds via videogames.well thse r my thoughts..yours???

» Primadonna...

If he's this anal about the event, how can an open debate be a realistic expectation? I really don't understand why he's even been given this platform since he got disbarred THROUGH HIS OWN ACTIONS.

The guy seems to have some serious mental issues, and sadly the sensible debate at the heart of his argument is completely lost because it's being presented in such a bizarre, close minded fashion.

Jack Thompson isn't interested in debate, rather he wants to bludgeon his point home regardless of the facts, which makes him a very poor (ex)lawyer.

No one loves you Jack. You're fighting for a lost cause because no one gives a *****. Stop trying to get your way because it's immature and annoying, that's why all your fellow lawyers laugh at you behind your back.

if you want to get technical, movies aren't life-like. cars don't explode in a mushroom cloud when they get in a wreck, gun shots aren't ear-shattering and don't knock people back 20 feet and spray blood all over the place, etc. etc. in fact... the reason they're so interesting to watch is because of the fact that they AREN'T very life-like. Here's what a gunshot really looks and sounds like (WARNING: don't watch if you're squeamish): http://www.snopes.com/photos/gruesome/interrogate.asp

Well, he was the guy who almost banned video games! If Utah just happened to pass that bill, it really wouldn't be long before it reached Obama, who would probably sign it, and therefore we'd have to play those kid games (plus the fact that, by presidential law, all those games in the US under developement would be canned due to the law, and those Eastern ports to the US? Forget about 'em!). I hope Thompson loses, so we don't have to worry about him for a little bit.

» HAHAHA!

"illegal" and blaming the loss of his law license on "lawyers for Take-Two, the makers of the Grand Theft Auto games." - - - - - - - Which means don't bite off more than you can chew dumbass!

I thought you were being serious, and I expected a really big crowd in that picture! XD

» not even close

his attempt was squashed. he's a joke. that's why he cant practice anymore

by JohnnyMcKinney - 2009-07-02 11:05
» RE: HAHAHA!

Seriously. You'd think he would learn his lesson. He's defenseless now, no one is going to listen to a lawyer who got put to shame by the people he was fighting against. What an embarrassment.

by TheRockness - 2009-07-02 17:02
» Exactly!

I would be like me taking Phillip Morris or Big Oil without a law degree.

by tobyo1 - 2009-07-02 23:14
» Give up Jack....

but er.... if you don't, I'll be happy to laugh at you.
