Grandma likes it big - DSi LL selling better than PSP Go

When it comes to the two newest gaming portables, it seems that Nintendo walked a better path than Sony. Sure, the target market may be different in some respects, with the DSi being aimed to the elderly as well, but when it comes right down to it, the new DSi LL is selling better than the PSP Go.

Stats come from Enterbrain, publisher of the popular gaming mag, Famitsu - the DSi LL outstrips the PSP Go by a sizable amount. Launched November 22nd in Japan, DSi LL sold approximately 103,524 units in its first two days. It's not as much as the 170,000 approximately hauled in by the smaller DSi, but it's certainly more than the 28,000 that the PSP Go sold at day one.

No stats available for how many PSP Go units were sold on its second day, but it's doubtful that it came close to the DSi LL's. It appears now, despite media devices getting smaller, bigger is better for the DSi LL.

PSP was and always will be my favorite portable system.

Oh wow, you 2 are missing out on some very fun games. I've been playing my PSP more recently but the DS' library is fantastic. Both Advance Wars, new Castlevanias, the FF remakes, Tactics Advance 2, the Kirby titles, Mario Kart, the ever addictive Pokemon. And they're just from my own small (19 game) collection.

Also the PSP can run anything the DS can? Oh right, I never knew my PSP had a touchscreen.

Actually the fact is, the reason DSi LL is selling more than a PSP GO is because of multiple reasons, its a Nintendo handheld and last but not least, it has a way cheaper price tag than a GO does.

Who the **** would buy a 250 dollar handheld, when they can buy a DSi LL?

Yes they could buy a PSP 3000, way cheaper than GO but everyone thinks the Go is a brand spanking new handheld, so everyone buys a DSi LL because it has a cheaper price tag.

will go down as one of the smartest marketing moves in history dropping the GameBoy tag, here in Japan every old woman has had a DS since they came out, and parents are happy to buy them for their kids cus they think it has educational potential. these are the kind of people who would'nt touch a PSP cus its a game machine, pure genius nintendo! make the 10 year out of date graphics a selling point!

Lol @ b-k24's comment. I thought the same thing when they announced the DSi LL. The screen looks at least 50% larger...making the pixels even fatter. The DSi's resolution was already small enough--that'll just make it worse.

Have you ever played a DS? Its a great system, if you say it only has kid games you're either an ignorant ***** or just plain retarded.

Just because a game doesn't have your "M" rating with lots of swearing and blood, doesn't mean its only for kids. It just means the games are that much better to overcome that.

I don't understand why people who call themselves gamers ***** about graphics... would you rather play an amazing game with N64 graphics or a great game that pushes the PS3 to its limits? If you would choose the second one, you are in no way a gamer to me.

there are mods for the touchscreen, but who cares? Touchscreens are stupid gimmicks for people who think 'omaigawrsh cool' at something like that. Okay, so there's like maybe 5 handheld lifetime hours of that actually feeling fresh and innovative... And then it's seriously just a waste of time to make games more complicated to make if they accommodate for functionality with it. Advance wars: there's I and II on GBA, shined up graphics aren't necessary. Mario Kart: there's fifty others. Poke'mon: THE NEW ONES SUCK ANYWAY. Kirby: millions. FF: they're on the PSP too, and much better looking. Bombed to hell.

About the sales of every iteration of every single console? First off, they should be grouped together as a whole. PSP, DS. They have the same library of games (mostly, other than a lot of PSP games not available to the go, a stupid decision), and mostly have the same functionality, but all that's added are little gimmicks that have nothing to do with the primary functions of each device. The only reason nintendo sales were and have been up, were die hard fans who had to have them, only to realize they are awful and go to microsoft or sony, and the fact that the target audience are old people and small kids, as well as simple minded teenagers.... endrant.

raggedjimmi is right, the PSP CAN NOT do what the DS can. Most of the games are built around the touchscreen. It's called casual game play and it's a #1 hit. Which brings us to SaDuWo idiot comment. Gimmick? Obviously you are dead wrong as countless millions on top of millions of people highly disagree with you.

YOU may not like it, but that doesn't make it a "gimmick".

Ah thank you Isohaven. I'm glad there are some intelligent users on this site.

Whilst I don't completely agree on the casual front, since touchscreen controls speed up gameplay on the more hardcore titles (FFTA2, Metroid).

But no, the PSP doesn't come with a touchscreen. People can mod it all they want - it wont have the full support as the DS does. Read up on what counts as "standard hardware".

That's a rather poor argument against the games I listed. There's no need for new Advance Wars? Using this logic theres already a Final Fantasy I-III on the NES, I guess we don't need any more with "shined up graphics", seeing that we're completely disregarding gameplay, engine and multiplayer enhancements. Name 50 Kart games better than Mario Kart DS. Good luck. There's a Final Fantasy Tactics 2 and FF3+4 DS remakes on PSP? Oh you must link me to these! Yea - they don't exist!

And finally, the DS is the best selling games console of all time. I honestly don't think Nintendo cares if you don't buy a DS.

i love how ppl keep saying that their personal preference is better than others. ok OBVIOUSLY PSP is a better handheld. it costs more too. i wouldnt want my kids playing my $100-300 fragile handheld. so thanks to nintendo we have an option that is both affordable and durable. as for the stylus and touch screen being a gimmick, no way. the games use would determine how gimmicky it is. touchpad technology has been in laptops for decades and allows mouse functionality. calling such a basic pc function a gimmick is just stupid. personally just like my psp a whole lot more. i like the screen size and firmware of the psp a million times more. movies pictures music internet and games on one portable console. nothing beats it. only problem i really have with ds though is simply that FF3 and 4 remakes woulda been a million times better as PSN titles than ds games and the zelda *****n blew.

As always, your opinion does not match the majority. So obviously the PSP is not better.

The handheld of choice depends on what a person wants. In other words, neither is better and neither is worse. But I wouldn't expect a dummy such as yourself to understand such a simple concept.
