Google develops free Wi-Fi service

Google is preparing to blanket the US with free Wi-Fi service.  The search engine giant has filed three patents related to offering wireless internet access.  The patents all have to do with serving up advertisements through a wireless internet connection maintained by a third party.  Google will team up with the internet company Earthlink who will build the actual Wi-Fi infrastructure and by teaming with Earthlink, Google believes the Wi-Fi network would be completed much more quickly.

yippie

AWESOME! Free Wifi all I gotta do is probaly install some bloatware or maybe even some nasty Malware! Seriouslly I think this would be cool but you just know they're gonna wanna put ins ome *****y banner ads and all the other useless tools those ISP use with their dialers.
by - 2006-03-29 13:26:36

It's neat but...

This is really old(atleasta year or two) and it isn't really PSP related. I know that is argue-able, but talking about the chemical make-up of the plastic on a UMD is just as related...
by - 2006-03-29 13:33:32
current news

Actually this info was released today, it was talked about a couple of years ago but now they actually have a company and patents filed.

googleverywhere!

First the internet, then the world! I really want Goobuntu and a G-browser
by - 2006-03-29 13:47:13
To clear things up:

01:22PM: There is no dialer, it is wifi. Braidband connections don't use dialers. 01:29PM: Montreal is close, but the range on wifi is 100 feet normally. Not quite close enough. Even WiMax, the best current wifi technology, can only go 3 miles.

crazy

Im sry to bust you guys bubble but weelchair man is corect. Unless google and earthlink invent a satelite capable of sending masive wifi signals or a tower of some sort. there is no way this could give coverage to all of the US. even if there is 3mile rang thats over 10000 towers times $ 200000 apiece even google dosnt have that money
by - 2006-03-29 14:57:24
"crazy" got a point

its gonna be a while before it actually happens.
by - 2006-03-29 15:38:37
01:22PM: There is no dialer, it is wifi. Braidband connections don't use dialers.

I know its not exactly a dialer, but you can bet you'll have to install some adware, nothings free.
by - 2006-03-29 15:39:04
It could be all of U.S.A.

They probably have some kind of new technology being developed that we don't know about Crazy.
by - 2006-03-29 15:58:18
select locations

it will probably first come out in all of the major cities (New York, LA, Dallas, Chicago, Philadelphia, etc.) then slowly branch out to more rural places (like Wyoming).
by - 2006-03-29 16:04:20
they will

theyll do it the same way they do digital pcs phones. My dad used to program redirectors or somthing like that for telus. Basically it just amplifies any signal coming into it so you can get coverage in caves and stuff
by - 2006-03-29 18:14:48
I currently have no WiFI connection

Where I am liveing, their are no wifi connections (except around Mc Donalds or Radio Shacks and places like that) so i hope this will be available at my house! Barbourville, KY is #1!

WI MAX TOWER

the WIFI TOWER ARE CALL (WIMAX TOWER) go to howstuffworks.com
by - 2006-03-29 19:36:27
notitle

google made 1.5 billion dollars profit last year. they have that kind of money. their last venture of selling ads in magazines that cost 10-40 grand each, actually sold for 2-4 thousand and they're still going forward with that idea. over 80% of internet users use google, so they have some backing. and this is in the US cuz google is a US company. just wanted to point that out :)
by - 2006-03-29 19:38:20
surely thats expensuve?

wont this be like really expensive? and how is there goin to be ads like on wifi? its says it thats how its gonna cover the cost i think somewhere
by - 2006-03-29 19:40:52
Bluetooth Goodness

They're probably gonna involve blue-tooth technology with this most likely, I think. It'd be the easiest way to allow internet access on a massive scale like that. It wouldn't be a bad way to go. I wouldn't be surprised.

Google will virtually take over the US

Imagine if google did offer free internet but the catch is that if you want it free your gonna have to deal with advertisements. This is probably whats gonna happen. Everytime u log on, you get an advertisement. Every certain amount of time they route u to an advertisement page where u have to skip. Usefullness for gaming? Probably not. They will most likely incorporate a similar system that cafes use. ya know if you goto a cafe and connect to their wireless, any page u try to go to will be the payment system page. Imagine that except you have to scroll through advertisements every "such" amount of time. So the usefull ness in gaming would completely go down. whats the point in playin games if the connection is lost every 10 minutes, thats my estimate time interval between advertisements. Free internet will do one thing. totally destroy all major ISP companies out there. AOl will lose more members then they can count, everyone whos on dialup will cancel their subscription because broadband with advertisements is still broadband. Google will become a media giant. So big that no one will be able to stop them once they release a nation wide system of advertisements.

This is Old

Not only is this about a year old, but not just the notion of it, San Fran and a few other big cities already have some google hotspots, and have, for like six months now.
by - 2006-03-29 23:49:45
Hm

They aren't going to blanket the ENTIRE USA, it's probably looking at a bunch of major cities...NY, SF, LA all come to mind fairly quickly. Mind you, I'm in Canada, so this doesn't effect me, but I used a dialer with my old broadband connection; they were much better than my current...bastards...
by - 2006-03-30 07:54:13
Damn Yanks

Hope you all die of WiFi Radiation
by - 2006-03-30 09:21:28
lol

Hope you all die of WiFi Radiation lol that would be awesome
by infraBLUEkid - 2006-03-30 09:40:12
this is bad news

all isp's will die and the only internet acces will be thanks to google it sounds horrible to me, i mean, good idea, but the advertisements are gonna suckass, i wont be using it if it has a10 minute ad campaign
by - 2006-03-30 13:17:48
Doesnt affect me

I live in Wakefield Nebraska. town of 1,400 people. its in the middle of nowhere. so i probably wont get a wifi signal.
by - 2006-03-30 14:26:02
well

well im sure that if google provides free access with ads, they will probably also offer a pey service to remove the ads. this would make google the only isp but youknow they are smart up there at google, im sure they have thought about all these little problems you guys are.
by - 2006-03-30 15:58:39
My thoughts

well, who knows they may do like a "pay $20 a month and you can brouse without ad's" now that wouldnt be that bad. and by the way, it they filed patten applications they prolly have invented something and/or bought some sort of technology thet will give them a larger range. just my 2c "oh, by the way, i was not stealing the idea of 2:26PM, honestly i was thinking of the $20 a month before i read his/her comment"
by - 2006-03-30 23:05:26
okay

in st cloud florida they got free wifi... no point tho there since evereyone is a redneck and the town is maybe 4 miles wide... gj state of florida giving a city free wifi when it doesnt need it.
by Magesx - 2006-03-31 18:11:00
yeah

I'm still wondering why people are finding this idea "bad". We don't know if they're going to do ads, etc. Plus Google has done a lot of stuff for free, or at the very least, cheap.
by - 2006-04-01 14:30:47
I want it

I wouldn't use it for online gaming, most likely, but if they can get it to work in Boise, Idaho, I'll be ecstatic. p.s.: Wasn't somebody else going to do this for like $5 with the satellite wifi?
by - 2006-04-11 16:30:45
...

lol if they give out wifi like a router or w/e all over the us. think about it there would probroly be no use for paying for internet connections any more if you get the wifi for free.. so i doubt it will be nation wide and i doubt itll even be that far they will probroly have the routers maybe in a company building localy who knows lol.
by - 2006-04-14 13:26:23
...

my city has this thing called 'global wifi' but you have to pay $30 a month for it. you can basically use a high speed connection anywhere in the city, psp included. i don't know how it works or anything but i've gone online in a whole bunch of spots.
