Google cooks up AdSense for Games |
Ó
Gamers have already seen not-so-inconspicuous product placements in several games, and they can expect in-game advertising to be taken to the next level. Apparently Google has devised "AdSense for Games," an advertising system that can be implemented in future games.
Here's how AdSense works, as shown in demos: an in-game character may suddenly pre-empt and announce a video advertisement, which immediately follows.
The idea of having an in- game character suddenly advertising for a product is, in a sense, a bit disorienting. However, the guys at Google have reportedly tested AdSense for Games for quite some time now, so it's better to wait for it's actual implementation before we can pass judgement.
Despite having tested the application extensively, Google still held back from releasing AdSense for Games at the moment, a fact that baffled some people from the gaming industry. "I donÂ’t know whatÂ’s taking them so long. They could move into this market very quickly, given what they have shown off," said one of the sources.

Might be me, but honestly I, like you said, do put up a sort of defensive barrier to advertising. I do not think I have ever yet feel for some advertising that wanted me to buy their product.

but NOT THIS SORT, it makes me sick
so what your gonna be in the middle of a battlefield and one of the soldiers turn round and stand up and ask you
if youve ever had an accident that wasnt your fault?......
***** NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOO
im all for billboard advertisement, such as say in gta4, there will be a bilboard for dominoes pizza, you click it and using your psn, it delievers the pizza you ordered
THAT BENEFITS US ALL, and adds realism

It'll be good to see this be released. I know that I, for one, will be using it in my own games. The nice thing is that everyone benefits here-- games that I otherwise would have released as shareware or even commercially, I may instead be releasing completely free (with some advertising thrown in between rounds).
Game developers like myself continue to earn a decent living, and gamers with short pockets are given opportunities to play games they otherwise may have needed to skip (or sell a kidney for). It's a win-win all-around.

also you are either in or where thinking about going into the advertising business so your comments are VOID
if its in a next gen game, say for example cod5
and you really get into the game, with the HD and surround sound, you dont want a ***** inserting a blindly obvious ad in the game, that throws you out of it and you say this is a *****in piece of *****
so
homebrew - yes
commercial - stick to non-obvious ads, get in the persons mind but nothing else repetition is the key
anyway i still think having billboards etc is the best way to go about it, just imagine play gta online wanting a pizza from dominoes but dont have the time to egt to the phone, simply wlak over to the bilboard, or select it some way and chose your fav food and using you psn account the money will be withdrawn and the pizza sent,
*****in superb

You're the only player left in your team... You're trying to be as careful as you can... Suddenly you hear something... You turn back, go around the corner, and see a big advertisement placed on the wall.

Now, I can not go to a movie without seeing product placements and in half of the movies the producers do not seem to even try to make the products and logos blend in properly.
Sure, stuff you see in daily life fits into a movie, but when a character randomly blurts out a product name or sales pitch or the camera focuses for awhile on a specific item with its logo clearly displayed, that actually takes away from the film.
As a result, I have not purchased a movie in the past two years. I either pirate them or sneak into the theatre without paying.
Fill the video game scene with product placements and piracy will skyrocket as gamers get fed up with this practice.
I do not pirate games since I stay away from sports titles and the rest typically do not contain ads (at least the ones I played on portable systems). But if I start seeing games I purchase filled with ads, I will gladly stop purchasing them and just download the lot of them.

Of course, if the games that contain ads are distributed for free or half price then I would be less reluctant to purchase a game that would contain ads.

And then they could make even more money by sueing you.

THIS WOULD BE HORRIBLE. If I had to look at an ad for stuff every time I paused halo 3, I would:
-Mod my 360, rip the ISO off the disc, Find a way to hack the advertisement to show up as nothing or not at all in the menu, and begin pirating 360 games.

You're turning a corner in CS, your back against a wall, you hear a tango and out pops a computer AI with a pair of nike air shoes.
If you're totally opposed to ads in games - look at Rainbow Six Vegas (1/2) and see how many cars you can spot that aren't Dodge.
This is the most likely form on non-intrusive ad-placement that they are looking into.

One big ad. Except for those of us not living in the states - then it's a free game that makes the American Army look like the biggest pimp of 'killing is fun'

According to the article, you encounter an in-game character who says something akin to "and now a word from our sponsor" and everything stops while you watch a video.
Nobody will ever accept it, unless its unintrusive. For instance, your ad gets shown on a billboard or on a TV inside the game, in which case the player will probably ignore it making the whole excercise pointless.

I thought they had more sense than that.

anyway, i dont care if there are logos and stuff but don't crap on the game itself. the quality of the game should never be compromised for such a thing.

Just don't worry about it because if they do make a hash of it then no one will buy the games.
