Germany to put makers of violent games in jail?

Pacifism. Wizards of the Coasts says it bestAll thanks to a school shooting which took place in Germany last month, some German government offices are now pushing a bill that would fine or jail producers and makers of video games which feature "cruel violence on humans or human-looking characters".

Uh-oh. This may be the beginning of sad days for German gamers, especially since a recent survey which was taken after the shooting incident showed that 59 percent of those who responded to the survey will actually agree to and support such a bill. According to Frank Sliwka, head of the online gaming organization Deutsche eSport Bund, "We have among the most drastic censorship rules for games. Now we are being labelled as a breeding ground for unstable, dysfunctional and violent youngsters."

Some analysts consider this to be a move by German Parliament to score some brownie points with the older generation; however, many find this new proposed bill problematic because of its very vague category description. If this bill pushes through in its current state, then this might just mean no Tekken, no Devil May Cry, no CounterStrike, no Naruto: Shinobi Retsuden, and DEFINITELY no Dead Rising. And probably no Wii Boxing as well ("humans or human-looking characters", remember?).

Sigh. Always blaming video games and never parental guidance and care - or the lack thereof...

» What?

I'm German. As far as I know producers and makers aren't concerned. You as a consumer can be put into jail for playing those games. Meant to be put off the market aren't such harmless thing like wii boxing (this is sports translated into a game). Politicians want to forbid so-called Killer-Games here.

This is a very sad fact. The people who want to prohibit "killer"-gaming are sad persons. They don't even know how to turn on a computer. I'm serious! But that's how the party CDU/CSU acts in Germany: Talking about stuff they don't understand.

I hope this won't come. As they would encourage Internet-piracy. Everyone would download the games instead of buying them legally. Thanks CDU/CSU for ruining a whole Industry.

» Well so much for Vracin Shnits Halo 3

The state of Illinois tried to pull this same crap. they ended up losing the case and were forced to play the bill for the game industries legal fees.

Parents!!! Control your little monsters!!!

» OMG...

This way I even save money.

Stupid politicians...

I'm 23 years old, so I want to be able to play whatever I want. If I can't buy it, I download it.

All this sh.t.... Just because we germans were some kind of "involved" to the first 2 worldwars...

*g*

The US people are doing even worse with their christianisatio n... with 1 diffrence: noone wants to see it, so noone cares.

» I smell BS, but...

It honestly wouldn't surprise me. The 'free countries' of the world are becoming increasingly FASCIST through fear propaganda. All they have to do is find a scape-goat and scare people into signing insane, restrictive laws in the 'heat of the moment'.

"Oh, an 80 year old person died after smoking for the last 30 years. NO ONE CAN SMOKE!"

"Oh, Mike was stupid and blew off his hand with a firecracker. NO ONE CAN HAVE FIRECRACKERS!"

"Oh, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac played Mario Kart before shooting up his classroom. NO ONE CAN HAVE GAMES OR GUNS!"

Politician: "I know what's better for you than YOU do."

And NO, fascism is not at all politically partisan, nor is it centered around a single faith; the sick history of Socialism/Communism speaks for itself.

Anybody who votes for fascist laws DESERVES a fascist country.

» This is good

I've been playing video games for about 19 years, I'd support this move. Games don't need to be violent and murderous in order to be fun, it's a cheap tactic which involves breaking social taboo. We need real game mechanics, not just 3D models bashing each other all the time.

» ahahah

Everyone knows that America has gangs, guns, violence, and slutty girls because of the fact that all they do is sit around on their fat asses watching tv and playing video games. I mean come on? We don't see the rest of the world having the same problems as America has. School shootings etc... It's all because you fat asses won't get up off the couch and experience the real world. The only lives you experience are that of celebrities and other nonsense because that is who you worship.

So, no Tekken, no mortal kombat, no boxing, no superhero games where you fight other heros.

Where are they going to draw the line? Is it still OKAY TO PLAY MARIO. What happens when bowser throws mario into a pit of lava.

*****ing IDIOTS. ITS CALLED PARENTING, AND NOT BEING ***** E D U P I N T H E H E A D. Video games dont MAKE YOU KILL SOMEONE. IF YOU ARE GOING TO KILL SOMEONE, THAT THOUGH WAS ALREADY IN YOUR HEAD!

well I agree, let them have firecrackers , and if they blow up their hand, who gives a *****.

The smoke is another issue. It is addictive, and secondhand smoke is discusting. Try walking through the back side of my school without getting smoke blown in your face every second.

Other than that, yes I agree with you...

» You have to be joking

Can you be so ignorant as to not realise that no form of media that isnt directly offensive to one or a group of people should never be banned their are plenty of games which dont contain violence but if a game is violent that is simply covering another side of emotions that a game can show you. Your point is as relevant as saying music doesnt need lyrics to sound nice but if we took them out we lose a whole other side of the experience.

» "Involved"... doesn't really cut it.

It's like saying the US didn't cause millions of deaths with the atom bomb in Nagasaki, they were only involved. I dont want to get into a debate about the world war when this article isn't related. I guess you were just "involved" in the holocaust and the slaughter of millions of innocent Jews.

"Involved". I would have used the word "caused" instead of "involved".

by Jack - 2006-12-08 05:11
» Are you taking the piss?

Lets say a US soldier had gun related fantasies about killing innocent people in Iraq. He then shot and killed 4 people and seriously injured 2. The US infantry were no longer allowed guns.

Bit of an extreme example but seriously lets say the parents of a child bought or neglected the fact that their child read 'The Daily Sport' for atleast an hour a day. That child then went on to rape 2 woman. All newspapers that contained sexually related images or text were banned and the creators of these newspapers were arrested.

by Jack - 2006-12-08 05:14
» I do agree to some extent.

But is it possible that germany are subconsiously doing this in fear of another hitler being nurtured. Think about it.

» Producers aren't concerned?

Then why has the producer of Far Cry said he's going to leave Germany if this law is passed?

You already have ludicrous regs over there. Carmageddon in Germany was ridiculous. That was 10 years ago!

So glad I live in the relatively sane land of Canada.

» Yeah..

Blowing hands off? It's called natural selection:) The planet seems hellbent on embracing mediocrity.

by ImEc - 2006-12-08 11:22
» "cough"

I'm sorry to tell you this but seeing specific things over and over again will affect you! Hitler's greatest quote "You can make anyone believe anything as long as you tell them it's true over and over again." The US has adopted this technique with their media, along with various communist nations. Videogames are no exceptions, it doesn't matter who you are or how smart you think you are, it will have an affect on the way your mind functions. Over eighty-nine percent of the United State's citizens are brain-washed and they don't even know it. Media has completely re-wired the way your mind functions and the US has gotten so good at it you can't even tell when it's happening.

P.S. Why do you even care what Germany does? They have every right to get rid of violent videogames.

by ImEc - 2006-12-08 11:28
» ***** you

You stupid little fat *****er, you have never been to Germany. All of the world's greatest scientists, mechanics, and inventors come from Germany. You stupid little bastard you don't know ***** about anything, get away from you TV and computer, and go see what the real *****ing world is like, douche bag.

by FloW3184 - 2006-12-09 01:26
» Ever thought about:

That we germans don't want to get rid of those violent videogames?

Do you ppl from the US want to get rid of those games?
