Question: Was Exidy responsible for starting the violent video games trend with Death Race? Was it Namco with Pac-Man? Nintendo with Mario Bros? GTA? Maybe, but according to a pair of German researchers, it was all really the Pentagon's fault.

In the latest issue of Current Concerns, Renate and Rudi Hansel linked the proliferation of violent video games to the U.S. military's work with military simulators. The Hansels claim that during the nineties the Pentagon released "killing simulators" for consumption by the general public:

During the nineties the killing simulators, employed for hand to hand combat in the US army and police, were released by the Pentagon to be sold for private use on the public markets. As a consequence the computer and video game industry that had co-operated with the Pentagon from the very beginning, boomed. Since then the so-called killer games have wreaked havoc among children and youths.

The Hansels are calling for these "electronic training programs for killing people" to be "taken back to the US barracks, where they came from. They have to disappear from civil society altogether."

Images are from Steven Lefcourt's 8-Bit Fatalities series.

» Woah our government

finally did something right. Imagine if they didn't we wouldn't have all this fun we have with GTA, Resistance, Halo, Metal Gear, Killzone. Thank You for this, in a time where people are constantly losing faith in that the government can do something right there is a ray of light with this. Thank You, pentagon for starting up violent video games where normal sane people can take out their rage on and not really go out shooting people.

Heard about this from a person double posting before on Google Chrome. I confirm that it happens on Mozilla Firefox as well. Message gets posted but you get an error.

This is completely true. The pentagon is well aware of an impending alien invasion and is just preparing us for the invasion. Seriously every hit FPS is basically either a sim or is protect planet X from alien invasion....both prepare our psyche for combat. Without Halflife, Halo, Gears, Resistance, Killzone most of use would freak out when the aliens invaded....but now we have a solid understanding on how to kill aliens.

Also, 9/11 was totally an inside job....too bad they didn't make as much money as they thought they would.

Dude you can't even make a post with correct grammar or spelling. It seems like the people on the internet who say it was an inside job can't ever speak correctly, but I guess that shouldn't be a surprise.

And I'm sorry if I don't reply to any more of your posts. I don't want to start a debate over this on a QJ article. I probably shouldn't have made that first post in the first place.

Actually, I think that "Renate and Rudi Hansel" is the German translation of Jack Thompson.

My German might be a bit rusty

» There's truth to this actually

This case being made is silly, but there is of course truth to there being a link between the military and videogames. The military has used games as tactical combat sims (there are also stories that copies of Doom were bought specifically to desensitize soldiers to blood, but that seems silly) for years. Also, many videogame development companies have employed former military men and whole entertainment companies have spun off of military programs (SingleTrac and Zipper, most notably.) Plus, there are a lot of supernerds who follow military history and tactics carefully and who also love computers, so it makes sense that there's a wooing of military minds into videogame development - walk into any game office and you're sure to find somebody with no more than three degrees of separation from a historical battle re-enaction actor.

The links go way back. Even in the old days, board games have been developed for military training and tactical experimentation and strategy skill development. (Listen to the A Life Well Wasted podcast for more info on that.) Also, there's the fact that videogames require hefty computing power, and especially in the early days of gaming, the only people who had massive computing machines were in government jobs.

Whether there's a direct line to accuse the military of creating violent games, I don't believe that at all, but has the military had a significant hand in making videogames what they are to day? Absolutely.

All the people who propagate these BS conspiracy theories can barely put a sentence together. Doesn't really help their case

and lol @ article, one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. What kind of "researchers" are these two exactly?

but im not a native english speaker, alas i can speak in other two different languages if you want the only trouble u might not get anything then xD, all im saying is the plain truth your own government planned and made the strike on the towers and pardon me for saying it but only a FOOL would not notice that, the --explanation-- they give was a totall bulls.hit and u know it, all im saying is im ON YOUR SIDE your govenment well obviously is NOT.

I think this speaks volumes for all "researchers say" stories out there. Just because someone claims to be a researcher doesn't mean they're intelligent.

Anyway, the military did develop FPS games for the public and they do use simulators for a lot of training but I don't see how someone can jump from that to "The US government is behind all violent videogames". Thats a little bit retarded.

I agree this is stupid but you're stupid if you dont realise that "9/11 was an inside job" is a possibility.

all you've done is believe something you've been told. only idiots believe something they heard off other people. especially if its just because the majority of people accept it as true.

"GTA, Resistance, Halo, Metal Gear, Killzone."

Only one of those games is made in america (not sure about Resistance)

by GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-05-12 22:38
» This is stupid.

Why would someone think the government had any involvement in creating the first games. People have always yearned for more realism and interaction in all games, be it chess, or Monopoly. I remember back in the day playing Combat on the Atari in the early 80's. Also people were also into D&D around that time too.

People are always quick to assume without getting all the info.

violent video games. Therefore if it wasn't for the pentagon we would not have any violent video games. None from USA none from Europe None from Japan and none from the rest of the world.

» You're still an idiot

I'm assuming if you're not a native English speaker then you're not a naturalized American? Sorry buddy, if you're not an American you really have no say on American conspiracy theories.

Come to this country and live here for 20 years, you'll see that the US government is no where near as evil as every other nation makes it seem. They do questionable things at times, but for the most part it's run by good men and women who would never consider killing their own people and crashing planes into buildings that were icons of American supremacy

by avatar76 - 2009-05-13 11:22
» Since the 90s hey?

I was playing computer games in the 80s like Operation Wolf which was based off of that nintendo shooting gallery game from the early 80s except more violent.

The first FPS that I played was id's Wolfenstein3D, I often though id were inspired by games like Operation Wolf, IE what if we could do this game but let you roam around freely, which I sincerely doubt had anything to do with the US government.

» @masterchef

you're the idiot if you think you have to be american to have an opinion on the trade centre.

its not only americans fighting YOUR battle.

when US asked for troops we obliged.

when we asked for troops in WW2, my memory might be hazy but US didnt want a bar of it until pearl harbour got bombed.

so i say to you, get your head out of your arsehole and relise it affects more than just USA.

» LOFL@FABLE, apex05, master chef

FABLE, apex05, master chef prolly work for the pentagon. no one could possibly be that unreasonably ignorant. do we really need to contest the demolition of the twin towers here on qj?

i cant believe how ignorant some of these comments are. we will never know the truth behind the al-queda involvement because of removal of evidence. but if you cant already tell what happened from the evidence thats still around then you truely are the epitome of american ignorance. research more or die before making offensive comments like "sept 11 was not a false flag event".

btw an extra screw you from all the people who died so you could justify the improper use of fossil fuels and support for foreign invasions. i hope you are trapped inside a humvee and starve to death.

you guys would put up a better argument trying to convince me the world is flat or square. because its quite obvious who really took down the twin towers.
