GDC 2007: very few PSP owners have a DS |
Listed in: News Tags: GDC, John Koller, Sony
Ó
Sony's John Koller, Senior Marketing Manager, revealed during the blogging panel held at the Game Developers Conference 2007 that according to research only eleven to fourteen percent of PSP owners have a DS. This despite the fact that "the DS prints money."
This basically underscores the sentiment that despite game-centric opinion, Sony's handheld device is definitely targeting a different market from Nintendo. Koller says: "We're not just competing against Nintendo." Okay, so just what exactly does the PSP have to compete with then? Well, there's the Zune, there's the iPod, and the iPhone (that will supposedly have games from EA), and a whole assortment of other multimedia devices.
So given this statistic, what's Sony's plan to help the PSP along? Koller hints that the XMB will be a bit more robust in the coming months. PlayStation Home integration perhaps?

38 million DS's sold world wide as of today,
...20 million PSPs....
I had a psp and a DS, i sold the psp, but then sold the DS to get a DS lite when it came out...
Love the DS lite way more, plus you have to count the uncountable number of games out or coming out for this thing!

But you guys are right, they are comparing apples to oranges.

I do however play my PSP more mainly because of homebrew. But I cant wait until another series of Feel the Magic and Rub Rabbits. There better be another. Also another New Super Mario Bros would be great.

i have both.
i run homebrew on both.
i love both.
we dual-consolers know we rule.
tell you the truth, my psp sees more action, but that's mainly because for really good games i need to pay $35 for the DS, (none for psp :P).
let me put it this way. if we are talking about both consoles w/o homebrew, the DS pwns.
if both w/ homebrew, PSP pwns. it's really that simple.

The reason most PSP owners don't have a DS is because they got it right the first time.
Unless of course they bought a DS and fold it for a PSP, then the second time.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

PSP offers variety. There's a game for every one, every mood. Not 20 year old franchises being rehashed and shoved down your throat over and over.

A VERY LARGE issue with the NDS is it's online play. IT IS SLOW AND LAGGY. NDS uses that horrible godawful bluetooth connection. While Sony uses a 802.etc... professional connection that's much faster. It's just a shame you can't use wifi connections with psp emulated games :(.
Do not buy a DS unless you want it for nostalgia. It's not really a system worth owning.
