GDC 2007: very few PSP owners have a DS

The PSP and the DS - Image 1

Sony's John Koller, Senior Marketing Manager, revealed during the blogging panel held at the Game Developers Conference 2007 that according to research only eleven to fourteen percent of PSP owners have a DS. This despite the fact that "the DS prints money."

This basically underscores the sentiment that despite game-centric opinion, Sony's handheld device is definitely targeting a different market from Nintendo. Koller says: "We're not just competing against Nintendo." Okay, so just what exactly does the PSP have to compete with then? Well, there's the Zune, there's the iPod, and the iPhone (that will supposedly have games from EA), and a whole assortment of other multimedia devices.

So given this statistic, what's Sony's plan to help the PSP along? Koller hints that the XMB will be a bit more robust in the coming months. PlayStation Home integration perhaps?

BTW, first! Now you can begin to invoke this captain earth thingie.

The figures dont lie, boys.

38 million DS's sold world wide as of today,

...20 million PSPs....

I had a psp and a DS, i sold the psp, but then sold the DS to get a DS lite when it came out...

Love the DS lite way more, plus you have to count the uncountable number of games out or coming out for this thing!

But you guys are right, they are comparing apples to oranges.

I have a PSP and a DS. I got my PSP first because I wanted to wait for a remodeled DS. The DS has Advance Wars, Feel the Magic, Rub Rabbits! and New Super Mario Bros while the PSP has Lumines, Metal Gear AC!D, Metal Gear Solid, and Me & My Katamari.

I do however play my PSP more mainly because of homebrew. But I cant wait until another series of Feel the Magic and Rub Rabbits. There better be another. Also another New Super Mario Bros would be great.

i have both.

i run homebrew on both.

i love both.

we dual-consolers know we rule.

tell you the truth, my psp sees more action, but that's mainly because for really good games i need to pay $35 for the DS, (none for psp :P).

let me put it this way. if we are talking about both consoles w/o homebrew, the DS pwns.

if both w/ homebrew, PSP pwns. it's really that simple.

Because you can't count the same things for the PSP?

The reason most PSP owners don't have a DS is because they got it right the first time.

Unless of course they bought a DS and fold it for a PSP, then the second time.

I currently have both and I have to say the DS has better quality games, but the PSP has Homebrew. I currently only have bought 1 PSP game and 3 DS games so far. The PSP needs a lot more better quality titles in my opinon. The PSP sees more play currently as I have on 2 PS1 games, a SNES, NES and Sega Genesis Emulator on it.

While my PSP sees almost daily use, i havent even seen my ds in months. must have gotten lost along with the damn gizmondo and razr. psp owns simply because it can play all the awesome games i grew up with. being able to emulate the best system ever (snes) is enough reason to agree that yes,

PSP offers variety. There's a game for every one, every mood. Not 20 year old franchises being rehashed and shoved down your throat over and over.

I have both. The psp, without any homebrew use whatsoever, is worse than the DS. The loading time and lacklustre games selection causes this. However, homebrew skyrocket's the PSP's potential into a godlike system that makes the DS look horrible. There were Yu-Gi-OH titles for both psp and DS. The psp version was a 10/10 on gamefaqs, while the DS versions rarely ranked higher than 7/10. This is a good indicator of the comparable power of the 2 systems.

A VERY LARGE issue with the NDS is it's online play. IT IS SLOW AND LAGGY. NDS uses that horrible godawful bluetooth connection. While Sony uses a 802.etc... professional connection that's much faster. It's just a shame you can't use wifi connections with psp emulated games :(.

Do not buy a DS unless you want it for nostalgia. It's not really a system worth owning.

With the PSP, you don't count the number of fun games one one hand. :P You either play one of the great titles out there with unbelievable graphics for a handheld, or a PS1 game, or pretty much any game ever made for any system ever made from the N64 and earlier.

Man I have this loser at my school... he is SUCH a Nintendo fanboy... I can't stand him either... I mean I can understand if he prefers the DS over the PSP, but the thing is the douche is always talking about video games and can't stop critisizing the PSP. It's funny though, he disses the PSP and I just come right back with a reason why PSP pwns DS, then he says more *****... this goes on until I can't stand his biased fanboyism anymore and just quit talking to the guy... I prefer the PSP over the DS, but at least I can admit the DS is pretty cool, which is more than that guy at my school can say about the PSP. Anyways, let me get to my point... in my opinion, the PSP pwns the DS and once Daedalus gets fullspeed, it won't even be close, I can't wait till that happens and I get to rub that fanboy's face in it... You can do it StrmnmnNrmnn (or whatever your name is)!

# fPSPZorZ 2007-03-10 16:24
Well technically I'm not "buying" any nintendo games for it... they are easy to go and find and download... besides, most (if not all) of the games I download and emulate on the PSP, I already own, but would rather be able to play them on the PSP, where i can listen to music/watch movies/etc... Don't get me wrong, the shooting/racing games on it are great, so I think why wouldn't you want to have the best of both worlds? :D

I have absolutely no idea how people can say that the DS has better games than the PSP. All the good games I see on the DS are the Castlevania's and that's it. My DS has been gathering dust since I beat Portrait of Ruin back in december. My PSP gets used everyday. I regret the day I bought a DS.
