PSP Analog Stick - Image 1

Latest word from PSP owners: We want a PSP redesign! Latest word from Sony: Don't count on it. Yep, IGN reports that a Sony rep in the currently ongoing Games Developers Conference (GDC) in Austin, Texas claimed that there are no existing plans of redesigning their handheld to fit the demands of their users.

According to the same Sony rep, the reason behind this is that PSP is yet to reach its peak, something which could happen this year. It's hard to argue with this considering the PSP's growing interconnectivity functions with the PS3. But it's also harder to ignore the growing user base's clamor for the handheld's Lite version (like what Nintendo did with the DS) and a modification paving the way for dual analog sticks.

However, a closer look could show that Sony could be right in not coming with, what most PSP users would dub it, a PSP2. Releasing a brand new and redesigned portable would mean that a larger userbase would be left with an older, less efficient hardware - something that could be a marketing headache for any company.

How would future games be developed for handhelds that have two versions with different controls? The reason behind the DS Lite's success is that its features remain very much the same as the earlier versions, so there aren't many owners who felt they were left out on the cold. With a PSP2 redesign, that's harder to achieve.

Still, I could be wrong. Maybe it's worth the risk having a totally revamped version of the handheld. Perhaps Sony can even come up with a trade-in option, where owners can have their PSPs tweaked to be more like the newer gaming devices for a lesser price. But that's just me being too optimistic. How about you, what do you think?

I think hardware attachments would be kool. Like a usb joypad.

i think that sony are *****ing lazy and they dont care about their customers at all!!

I agree with Sony

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a PSP2, but I know that I had to save up for quite some time to get my PSP when it first came out, and while I have more money now, you know that the PSP2 would not exactly be cheap. Sure, having some extra features or controls (especially the longed for second analog) would be great, but I believe that Sony is correct in saying that the PSP is not yet lived out. Until they are ready to do a significant increase in the PSP's graphics and processing abilities, I think that streamlining and adding the second analog are just gimmicks.

Sonys right

first off its a smart move on Sony not to release a PSP2 yet. if they do they they will most likely lose every single psp owner with homebrew and cfw. i know that if there is not exploit on the psp2 like there is now i WONT buy it . Second how many of you would buy a psp2 anyway. there will most likely be no exploit in the firmware so no homebrew/cfw. it will be liking having a psp with some added features. and third, this is actually good news. if sony thinks the PSP has a year or two left we can expect more features to be added and more cfw. it also means they havnt given up on the PSP

Good choice

Finally a smart move from Sony! We want good games for good consoles, and the PSP is a good console. I think that before adding new stuff to the PSP, they should use its capabilities to the maximum, like adding a better battery, clock the PSP to 333MHz by default, giving a use to that IR interface, that no one has found a use to (outside the homebrew community). Other thing Sony should add would be a customizable firmware, without the need to use homebrew applications.
by - 2007-03-09 03:07:47
Exactly

USB additions would be nice, like Bluetooth you could use with cellphones/PSP's
by - 2007-03-09 04:03:47
redesign is a terrible idea anyway

I can't really see there being many changes they could make for the better anyway. it can't really be thinner as it would be even more uncomfortable to hold for long periods and no one wants a smaller screen. a second analogue stick really doesn't appeal to me personally and like the article says it would mean games would have to be designed for both control styles I wouldn't spend more money on another psp no matter what changes they made.
by - 2007-03-09 04:10:12
crazy

i think the world is crazy when they actually want to buy the same thing again just with another design. MOST people who own a psp are probably happy with what they got.
by - 2007-03-09 06:17:36
there never will be a psp2

they cant ever make a psp2 now coz they said they arnt so if they did they could be sued for falsly claiming its like if somebody found a way to ressurect aeris in ff7 they could sue squaresoft coz they said there is no way to ressurect her
by - 2007-03-09 07:33:05
Sony (and mike) are right

I love my psp, but mostly for it emulation abilities and homebrew. One would have to assume with the headache the homebrew scene is giving Sony, that any future products would be much better secured. Besides this one works fine for me, there is no way I am shelling out anohter 200-300 bucks for a new version just cause they didnt get it right the first time.
by - 2007-03-09 07:36:31
HA

Your logic is as flawed as your grammar. If they don't make another one, it will probably be because this one has not lived up to Sony's financial expectations.
by - 2007-03-09 07:40:34
yes, sony is right on thisone

I'm a PSP owner and I don't want a redesign - what PSP owner would? That means getting rid of a $300 piece of hardware to get a newer version of it? Forget it.
by - 2007-03-09 09:17:11
.

I'm glad. I got a DS when they were first released, but soon after traded it in for a PSP. If I haddent, I'd be pissed over DS lite. Nintendo didnt even wait a full year to annouce it. As expensive as PSP is, I wouldnt want redesigns comming out as often as GBA did. Aside from lighting and glare issues, I feel PSP is fine the way it is.

All Lies - 7 things the PSP really needs

This article says all PSP owners want a redesign... that's bull. Where did you get that info? Your ass? Has there actually been a poll to determine what we really want? What we really want is this: 1. A good GPS device that works and cost under $100 2. A good camera/camcorder attachment that records at greater than 2.0 pixels 3. Software that will let us upload vids directly to YouTube from our PSP 4. A battery that last up to 20 hours 5. Better speakers 6. A right thumb stick (maybe this one will need a redesign) 7. Icon RCO to work in 3.10 OE
by The Last Master - 2007-03-09 11:03:37
Id buy it.

Short an simple, people took to long to get the highly distributed PSP. And the sells werent nearly as impressive as those of a Nintendo DS. The day a PSP2 is realeased id buy it, for not only that reason but two others. 2. I don't buy UMD's for newer Firmwares, until the firmware is hacked. 3. I would actually like to see the capabilities of something new. Not that iam extremely happy with my psp at its present moment.
by - 2007-03-09 11:20:34
:/

Sony should focus on marketing the image of the PSP. Introducing the white PSP on the USA with a huge advertising campaign (without the usual bull*****, though) would be a smart move.
by - 2007-03-09 12:10:41
just in case...

if they make up their mind and release a PSP2, please make it with some vulnerability so gangstar h4x0rz can do kewl homebrew stuff and all the emus and all. Thanks :-)
by GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-03-09 12:44:30
Um...noo...

The opposite is true... as Sony doesn't want to screw over a bunch of people who bought the PSP (a two year old handheld), by releasing a more superior one that has more functions. They can't really make one lighter, brighter, etc like how Nintendo did (to milk money, because they could care less about their buyers). PSP is perfect how it is ;)
by GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-03-09 12:46:44
but...

Sony DID get the PSP right the first time around...there really is no reason for a second analog stick...the DS doesn't even have one analog stick, so why not complain about that ;)
by - 2007-03-09 15:30:42
...

i wish they would update the psp screen technology and put a better screen in it cause the ones now have some pretty bad ghosting problems when fast motion is involved that should be possible cause the DS did it
by - 2007-03-09 16:04:14
better screen?

dont think they could get a better screen in than what they have already? i may be wrong, if they did itd eat more power for sure. more USB add ons would be awesome, they NEED to give users a bit more freedom.

Respones

1. Gps would be cool - id totally buy it - or import it 2. Camera attachment would be nice - psp to camera custom cables, maybe? 3. Check homebrew - might be out. Not necessary, but would be neat. 4. There are larger batteries, but honestly, mines only died on me while playing it 1 time. Get an extra battery for 40 bucks - problem solved. 5. Itt doesnt have bad speakers - use some friggn headphones - that way you dont annoy everyone else. 6. Impossible. How would that work with current psp games? It wouldnt. Has to be programmed into the game(s). Not realistic anyway. The games work fine without a second stick - deal with it. 7. Yes id like that too.

Keyboard, Web Browser, MSN

PSP still has a lot of room on it to go. Sony can still add: 1st: Keyboard + MSN + updated web browser (flash, memory) 2nd: free GPS software + maps with WiFi/USB GPS add-on 3rd: divx/xvid with subtitle + PDF + PPT + notepad support I think these items would open a huge market and place for PSP. The biggest problem is that firmware size is in his limit but I think with more language packs (less languages on each firmware but more firmware "zones") and optimized code would do the trick.

Dude what more do you want? Bigger? It's a hand held man. And it's a bright LCD.
by - 2007-03-09 21:01:42
An idea...

Ughuu... this sucks, but I had some ideas ((which Sony will never hear... -_-)), but I'd like to see how people would take them: 1) Make a PS2 Controller adapter that hooks into the USB 2.0 port? I know there are already some in the works, but an official one would be nice, or at least one that's pre-manufactured. 2) Make a PSP2, but don't make exclusive games for it. Include L2 and R2 buttons and a second knob, but only make it so that you can remap the buttons on the console to different ones. Crazy or dumb ideas, yes, but also possible solutions that could prevent the whole "Console split." Anyways, I'd like to hear your feedback! ^^
by - 2007-03-09 21:43:18
agreed

Yea, Sony's right about not wanting to do a redesign. I would gladly buy a psp2 IF AND ONLY IF (iff for those math aficionados) they were to give it a major graphics, memory, and processing upgrade. Sony's known for their product lifespan and I don't think they or their consumers would really want them to tarnish their reputation by "upgrading" their already sufficient system the way Nintendo does. The original DS only lasted a little while before the DS Lite came out to replace it. I'm glad I can buy only one system because they got it right the first time. And just remember, the psp may only have 1 analog stick, but the ds has only 0 analog sticks.
by - 2007-03-10 00:45:42
HUGE

1. That would make the PSP HUGE! The controls are fine, as long as the game is built correctly. 2. Not gonna happen anytime in the future. Where would you put an l2 r2 button? The thing would be enormous! (Would have to be thicker). Re-mapping controls would be nice, but there is some homebrew out that does just that.
by - 2007-03-10 01:50:09
trade-ins

say they did create psp2's sony would never do trade-ins because they would just be losing out on money, as they these older psp's coming in, what r they going to do with them? they'll just throw the older technology out
by - 2007-03-10 13:28:53
either way.

They shouldn't just redesign the PSP, they need to make a whole new Handheld console... If they Released the PSP2 instead of the PSPNEW (or whaever), then it would be alot more bearable, like upgrading to a PS2 from a PS1, or to a 360 from a regular XBOX. If they released a PSP2, it would be just like any other console selling a newer version of iself. The PSP2 would still be able to play the older PSP games, plus the new 2 analog enabled PSP2 games...
