GDC 2007: Playstation Home announced in Phil Harrison's keynote speech |
Ó
Just about a week ago, the internet practically imploded when Sony decided to blackball the folks from Kotaku. For those who may not have been aware of what happened, it was basically a case of a bad reaction from Sony when Kotaku decided to post a rumor about this little thing called the "Playstation Home". Well, over at the ongoing Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2007 at San Francisco, it turns out that the the rumors were actually true, and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s (SCEI) Phil Harrison himself said so. And he had screenshots to boot.
In his keynote speech titled "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames", Phil Harrison noted that PlayStation Home prides itself in being the first of its kind. The free Playstation service will be available by fall of this year, and will serve as the 3D online user community service for PS3 owners everywhere.
In this environment, users will be able to create their own fully-customizable-from-head-to-toe avatar, as well as settle in a virtual "apartment". Users will be able to invite other users into this virtual living space, where they can then proceed to show off their abode's furniture, decorations, and other items. Meanwhile, the virtual apartment can also be used to share music, videos and images that you have stored in your PlayStation 3's drive with your online guests. Lastly, there's also each user's "Hall of Fame" where you will be able to display the 3D trophies that can be unlocked by achieving in-game milestones in PS3 games. Besides being a place to show off your achievements though, Home also promises to be a place where people can interact and communicate with each other. This is achieved via the use of built-in text, audio and video chat, as well as a wide range of expressive avatar emotes.
PlayStation Home will be going into its closed beta phase by spring, which will hopefully help in taking out the bugs and thus hasten the process for its expected full launch later this year. Judging from the looks of the screenshots that the 1UP crew acquired, we wonder why in the world Sony was so adamant about covering it up in the first place when the whole thing looks so very, very good.
More details to follow as they come!

will there be a virtual pub for me to have a virtual pint with my virtual mates?
***** this *****
http://psp.ign.com/articles/770/770569p1.html
"It took over two years, but the Japanese PSP finally proved itself superior to the Dreamcast by reaching a milestone that forever eluded the final Sega platform: a platinum hit. The honor of first million seller for the PSP goes to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd which, according to Capcom, has topped the million mark in shipments."
so it took the psp 2 years to match the dreamcast which lasted also around 2 yrs? wow what an accomplishment, the psp lol the psp fails like the dreamcast.
now dont say this is stolen from micrsoft or nintendo
This is stolen from second life.
Lets see hoe this turns out. It looks pretty cool.
http://www.pspfanboy.com/2007/03/07/gdc-07-sony-proves-they-dont-care-about-psp/
Luks tottaly cools a potential console seller.
I thought Motostorm was supposed to be going to do that? but this I dont think so.
This looks *****ing awesime.. being an IMVU user i can already imagine the insane application they can do with this type of enviroment... Its going to be nice to see ps3 move away from the psp style into fully #d enviroment all this for free.. no bs paid-for xbl of gay lil Miis... XD I wonder what other crazy ***** is sony going to come up with next...
now back on topic mr 360?
Microsoft, you know what to do.... (buy 2nd life ;] and integrate it into XBL)
this looks *****ing stupid. for any of you who actually have a social life, i hope you find this rather retarded. Xbox Live will forever be on top, besides sony lacks the skills to bring customers to their consoles. PS3 is a flop, good luck with "home" i wonder how many patents you have to fight to actually get that name for a game.
F,ucking losers.
It would be cool if u can go to a movie theather on this pay 10 dollars and steam it to ur PS3
there are several virtual life games like second life out on the web. but the ps3s one will be cool since it will be integrated with the ps store and other ps3 features
motorstorm has been out for like 1 day. lets wait a bit and see
i think playstation home could be a good seller if it was offered over the ps store
if you hate psp so much then get your ass out of here and go wave rainbow flags with your ds buddies
SICK FEATURE!!!! Can't wait for Playstation Home =P
Hop theymake the character models more realustic though...
that means that sony is in the right direction
the more posts from 360 fanboys----->the more it indicates that sony is winning
Watch the video for it qw and then you will see. Its basically XBL and PSN put into virtual. Instead of just having a list of friends to talk to you have a wide community which is expanding all the time. In the futute there will be virtual cinemas to download video content and game shops to download extras for games. This owns XBL and Wii online shop by far. Those two are the past Playstation Home virtual shopping and community is the future!
The only loser I see here is you.
Apparently you're the one that doesn't have social life, because you obviously have nothing better to do than post unintelligent hateful comments about a competing product.
And how many patents you have to fight to get that name? Patents are for inventions or creations. Names, phrases, and expressions are for copyrights.
Judging from your sub-intelligent post, I can clearly see why you don't have a social life. Most people probably wouldn't want an idiot around who can only make retarded comments.
Nice job with the 'plug your ears and scream mindless comments and insults until the feature you wish 360 had goes away' technique.
You say PS3 owners don't have a social life, and then you talk about Xbox Live? What's the difference? Your post really sounds like you feel threatened about this; do you WORK for MS?
Also, how could Sony prove they have these "skills" you speak of when you don't even give them a chance? Why are you even on a PS3 site when it's obvious you are a MS fanboy with no intentions of purchasing a PS3?
QJ.net really needs to turn off unregistered posting to clear out some of these moronic fanboys.
.. and it's free..unlike that expensive Xbox Live .. but it wouldn't be able to handle it anyway.. That's why RFOM already has larger maps with more on-line players and they are just getting started...LOL.
Now we can also see why the Cell was built to handle at least two full HD streams .. unfortunately the 360 is brought to it's knees with one...
So sad..but not for PS3 owners...since they also have hard drives built in too take advantage of the new world...but hey you can pay all over again for another 360 with a real hard drive, HDMI like the PS3 already has - but you'll still be limited to one HD stream so why bother.... LOL.
What an awsesome vision.. play beyond indeed..oh man spanked again. Someone at MS really should hire people from Sony to understand what vision means.
Hmm wonder if that global PSP connectivity is somehow tied into taking your world with you and sharing it as well ..LOL.. it's called vision.
Oh boy spanked again. Man does the 360 look even more boring now.
So what do you have w/ xbox live? A buddy list, VOIP,online gaming, AND FOR A *****ING PRICE!
What do you have with the wiispace? interactive models.
What do you have w/ PS3 Home?
Interactive models that can walk around, use VIOP or text, go into games together, create their own homes, show off their awards, FOR FREE?
How can you change this into something bad for the ps3 you flamboyant fanboys, when it clearly is a great feature?
Ok - here is x360 fanboy.
"Wow that ps3 home is really something!! Too bad i don't have a ps3, but I have a 360 :), so let me convince myself that ps3home sucks, and is only for antisocial people so i don't regret my purchase. Then let me bash others so they follow my idea."
Too bad PS3Home >>>>>>> XBL from what i've seen so far.
***** OFF PEOPLE WITH BUYERS REMORSE.
ITS FREE!!
While not a bad idea, I don't think it will get many people to buy a PS3. Also, you must have no social life if you need to make a fake apartment, fake you, and online friends you can only chat with and show off your achievments.
I'd rather take real friends to a bar and drink. I guess you can get drunk in front of the PS3 and chat with your friends, but that further reinforces the notion you have no life.
I don't know why you act like we get angry about this stuff. You can do pretty much the same thing (without all the fake stuff) on XBOX live. I think people care much more about the number of games available.
I use my XBOX 360 as a gaming machine.
I don't use it to replace a healthy social life.
If you need to make a fake apartment, fake furniture, etc. maybe you need to make more money to get the real thing. This is basically a glorified way to chat with online friends you will never meet.
Read carefully: I DO NOT CARE. Buyers remourse? Give me a f*cking break. I have 160 games to choose from.
Dude, seriously. With the amount of time you spend here just waiting for another ps3 article you can post your hate on, you have no friends. Fact of the matter is, some people at some times of the day can't go out with friends. There are a million reasons why myspace is the biggest social site ever, but for ps3 owners, this will be just so much better... And thank god we will never have to see you there. Because you are one of those fanboys that will talk so much ***** about something that you convince yourself everything is bad. Then you can't buy it, because you would be a hypocrit. Loser. Get a ps3 and just enjoy it.
its last place in the handheld market and thats what matters.
Mister Common Sense you have no life. So what are you talking about
like Mister Common Sense said, basicly if your into this type of *****.. you have no social life, i however do. Instead of talking to these people over a "virtual life" i invite my friends over to have beer and play some halo, that my friends is *****ing social. And don't say sony wont do micro transactions with this, its too *****ing easy to rip money out of your wallet with this idea. where as xbox, i don't mind paying 5$ a month. With that i get Demos of every game released, i get to play online, I can contact my friends via VOIP, i get excellent service, i got a network coming my way where i can play on my pc against my friends and earn achievements doing it. Gamer tags are like a soldiers dog tags, it has everything you've accomplished and explains your personality in a way companies have not allowed. Good luck with your virtual life, maybe this will suck all the 12 year olds out of xbox live and make it even better.
ALL THIS IS, IS ANOTHER WAY TO GET YOUR MONEY VIA MICRO TRANSACTIONS.
A purple couch isn't as amusing as a really challenging achievement you just unlocked.
Once halo 3 comes out, all you 360 ***** talking rich *****s will be left with a *****ty game like killzone 2 that nobody cared about the first one.
This looks really boring! I always look at the positive side and like almost everything around the Ps3 but this... this doesn't seem like any fun at all for me... But things like second life and such seems to be atracting people so why shouldn't this? Maybe I will find it a lot of fun when I get it, but it sure seems like something people with, as they say, "no life" would like...
I am a 360 owner; and so far I LOVE my 360. That said, this is a pretty cool feature for the PS3. It's actually NOT a direct rip-off of something the other two have done. However, I think everybody should have a wait & see attitude about it. If it takes off after implementation, more power to the PS3 users. What people fail to understand is that innovation by any console is good for all consoles in the long run; because they ALL DO eventually rip each other off!
I agree. I own a ps3, and I think that this competition between Sony and Microsoft is great for both of us. Sony tries to outdo Microsoft, Microsoft tries to outdo Sony. In the end, it's both of us that win +)
This looks cool, can't wait to invite people for some games and show off my achievements.
whats next virtual sex virtual taxes hahahahaha yesss im loving the irony of this like taking chocolate pie from a fat kid and giving it to a diabetic no offece to diabetcs i gots tons of them in my family just quite humerous to say the least. unless u get to brutilly murder people or fight some biga$$ dragon of sorts im not interested i play to escape reality not relive it.
That is funniest comment i heard today...LOL
im sure youll have to update ur ps3 thus removing any h-b that could potentially happen much like the infamous ps1 emulator luckily we surpassed that and hopefully the same will happen again
i would love to like share points (or money) with buddies and like buy movies together (say split the 4 dollars half) and then play it on theater in home..and watch together...nice damn SOOO much possibilities
hm to be a gamer is the same to have a virtual life come on you leave the real world an get in to a fantasy world
or just be on a site on the internet to post some f**** bad post some leave the real world for get
away from the war an all the bad ting i the real world just to get some funny time
an i do not have a xbox360 i have see the xbox Live an i will not have one do not like to pay just for to game a chat i will buy my ps3 on the 23 marts
the home on the ps3 Luks tottaly cools an nice
Pretty sure it said the Dreamcast Did Not accomplish such an action. Not hit below the mark of the dreamcast. Strangler, you fail.
Ok, I'm going to try to neither praise nor put down anybody in this comment. It seems that at least partially, this is Sony trying to compete with Microsoft's gamertags and Nintendo's Miis. I cannot say anything about gamertags, as I know nothing about them, but I can say that Sony missed one key aspect of Miis that makes them so popular. Miis are not meant to be realistic; they're iconic caricatures. The avatar feature of the Playstation Home is more like creating a custom person in the Sims; the character itself is just a person. Miis have a unique look and style to them.
I also think Sony should be spending more time getting more exclusive games for the PS3 and improving and expanding its online community, as they will sell the system much better than something like this will. The features of the online community are second to the ease and popularity of that community. No matter how cool Sony makes this, it won't be enough to combat Xbox Live on its own.
check out djkman and meet him there buddy!
Stupid "FIRST!" noob.
While this is simply Sony's answer to gamertags and Miis... I've got to say, it does seem to put Microsoft and Nintendo's offerings in perspective. The "Home" feature seems really apealling to me.
well Mister Common Sense has at least one friend.
matt.
Or maybe he's just a co-worker.
You ask questions about what it will have when they clearly say it in pictures and videos. This isn't crappy Mii stuff, or a useless xbl where you play games. This is how the PS3 home experience will work.
Go home, turn on your ps3. You log into your online home. There is a new message on the wall that says there is a new demo you can play for killzone 3. Sweet! you stroll out of your apartment and down to the lobby.
There it is, the new arcade machine with a crowd of people around it. Everyone is talking about how great the new game looks! You say hi to a friend you were playing RFOM with the other day, chat about a few things, then go check out the demo.
You walk up to the machine and the little screen expands to full screen. Now you are playing the demo of the latest and greatest game! It's sweet, but you feel like something else.
You exit the demo, and walk to the movie theater door in the lobby. They just put up their latest release on video, spiderman 4. You walk up to the door and a little popup appears, asks you to pay the $2.00 to watch this movie. Paying lets you watch the movie 3 times, whenever you want. You hit ok, and it lets you into the theater.
You walk down, find a seat, and fullscreen again, now you are watching the movie. Streamed to you in 1080p.
Towards the end of the movie a friend of yours from the UK sends an im, they want to play a game of pool. The movie ends, and you leave the theater.
You head over to the arcade, where your friend is waiting by the pool table. Unlike the crowded bar (and the fact that your friend is 4000 miles away) when you walk up to the pool table there is always an open table. You guys play a few rounds, then you remember that you just took some new pictures of your new car, and you suggest that your friend comes back to your apartment to check them out.
You both head over to your private space, you have to allow someone in with you to check it out, or you can certainly have a public billboard with your pics and videos, like a myspace front page.
Your friend comes in your apartment, which you have decorated the walls with new pics. Oh yeah, you have a new video you took on your digital camera of a local band he has to check out. you guys sit on the couch and turn on the plasma. A quick browse of your files and you find it, then it is playing on both of your screens at the same time. Your friend really likes the band, so you go to your stereo, and select the album you ripped, then pass it to your friend. Now his system has downloaded the music from you. You have to show him one more thing, you beat a new level in Lair 2 and unlocked a pet. You both walk over to your balcony, where a little pet dragon is chillin on the railing, cleaning his toes. Bad Ass...
Your friends IRL have showed up and have been watching the past few minutes of your pshome activities. A few of them own x360s, and cry in shame... They never knew how cool the experience could be!
I only added things like the pricing structure for the movies. If you look at all the pics provided of PShome, and the peoples thought bubbles, this is all part of the experience! There is nothing like this right now. It's not second life. You can walk up to someone new, ask if they wanna do a track in motorstorm and start playing the game right from there.
Quit with the comments about 'this will hold off ps3 users until there are good games' There are good games, and great games now. If you had the money for a ps3 you would know that. Besides, this won't be out till the end of the year.
Who cares about micro transactions for things like furniture and clothes. A LOT of people will be seeing this. It'll be fun. A few bucks to decorate your online persona is fine.
You get everything for free that xbox users HAVE to pay for. In addition to that, you get countless other games, demos, and features for free. And a new social networking site, for free... Then, if you WANT to pay for it, you can buy top downloadable games, or stuff for your persona.
Mii's aren't
Mii's aren't popular, or cool. It's because they look like crap. Only problem is, wii users have no choice. If their gamecube powered system had the power to render lifelike avatars for everyone, it absolutely would!
BTW gamerscore is the lamest thing ever. Come on, you're proud of the thousands of hours that you have been playing video games?? You want to brag about winning a new game, and all you get is some points and a new entry on your list?? How is that better than getting a fat trophy in your new apartment that everyone who walks by can see.
Why do people play the xbox 360? only for gamerscore? You play all these stupid new games forced on you because you already maxed out the games you have, wtf. If you want a high gamerscore you have to buy every game they sell you! Don't you people get that? The games arent any good, why bother. So people cheat at gamerscore, then the whole system is meaningless... What happens if someone cheats at PS home? They have a cool house with cool toys. Big deal. Everyone else doesn't have to wonder why they can't ever seem to catch up, because in PShome you have control over the way everything looks.
This is going to be a huge feature for the PS3 when it comes out. That is all there is to say. It's friggin cool, and you all wish you had it now, as do I.
:)
That's all for now.
Funny I remember three gaming companies... but only two handhelds... Technically Microsoft is the only one who is in last place here.
Maybe you might have notice the increase of PSP sales and decrease of DS. PSP has been getting better games lately... Good games + Good system.
The PS3 has been out for lttle less than three months. I almost got myself to buy a 360 for Oblivion but my wish was granted... A better upgraded Oblivion for the PS3 YAY!
I would but a 360 if it merrited a buy but look at it this way... Microsoft 5 years 2 consoles later we grant you Halo... Um Halo 2!... and Um.................... Gears of War.....
Congrates for having wasted $400 bucks on a system with only a 20 gig drive, No Wi FI, No Blue tooth, and not even an HD DVD drive to boot... I weep for 360 fans
This looks bloody awesome, not cheap and tacky like the stupid Mii. Even sounds better than XBL.
If it really works the what they explained, and it's FREE then hell yeah it's gonna be system seller. This totally takes the gaming community to a virtual level. Customisable apartments, music, avatars - this is the future!
I wonder how people will create their apartments. Surely there's gonna be some payment required to buy furnitures and stuff, which I don't mind as long as it's affordable. That waterside screenshot looks brilliant.
You know what would be even better? If you can trade your game points for cash/credits in the PShome world to shop for better furnitures, appliances, decorations, apartments, etc. The possibilities are great.
In addition to buying credits with real money, this would be a great way to encourage and reward online gamers.
how about whenever you buy a game...let say KILLZONE 2. you get a automatic free bonus points. and you can use that points to buy clothes, furnitures and etc.
I like that idea ;)
One of the interviews I just read said that exclusive content would be delivered as part of future game releases, like furniture, clothes, accessories, ect. So yeah, they thought of that one as well.
It's pretty much the perfect online world!
Finally a 360 owner who makes sense.
To all other c**ts who don't appreciate this great, new feature-
IF I DON'T HAVE A SOCIAL LIFE THAT'S MY F**KING BUSINESS. NOBODY IS FORCING YOU TO BUY A PS3 OR USE THIS. SO GO F**K YOURSELF!
You can appearantly get unlockable goodies with games. Like a Heavenly Sword t-shirt. It would be awesome if there is an actual shop or mall in Home to buy stuff like that. This is only the beginning, the possibilities are limited to imagination.
you get what you pay for. you've seen what Playstation online has offered so far for free, what makes you think thats gonna change. Xbox Live is $50 because it's worth $50. Sony: a company of empty promises.
case closed
well i don't know what you are talking about. and SONY haven't disappointed me yet.
when SONY said that its FREE ONLINE to play games. you all XBOX fanboys said, nah it won't happen...which eventually did. now that SONY release HOME way better than XBL, you guys going to say again...well you need to pay something. well we know that already...i can live with what HOME can offer may it be just those standard clothes and furniture that you get and let gamers decide what they think is worth paying and getting those extra content then im happy. as long as its FREE and as a cool as what can HOME can offer to us PS3 owners...i don't have a complaint.
its very funny when these people complain too much when PS3 is only 5 months old. they think that if they keep on bashing and make some propagandathey will persuade potential next gen owners to jump to their system. which it never did, and to their astonishment it jump to the Wii....haha.
yea about time microsoft can kiss the ps3s shiny metal ass xbox live my ass this is the real future just imagine inviting your friend over 2 ur apartment or beter yet ur girl friend and watch a little porn with her yeaaaaaaaaaaaa
its not a game its an online 3D XMB...
So basically you get to do some of the same things as you can do on XBOX live, except you have to wait for your virtual character to walk around to the right location. I think the novelty of this will wear off quickly since it really doesn't add any functionality. At least you can chat about how awesome you think the upcoming PS3 exclusives will be, then when they come out how much you're disapointed (like motorstorm.)
Will sony sell you virtual clothes, furniture, etc.? Most likely yes. Is this their briliant idea to get people to pay for the PSN without realizing it? Like I said all along, sony will not give anything away for free.
I like games better than gimmicks.
They're giving that all to you free right?
How can you get excited about paying for virtual crap to put in a virtual apartment?
That will be the bill for your "free" online, along with advertising out the ass, along with the $600 you paid for the console.
Hey man if u think think home is a copy of second life then second life is a copy of the sims!!!
Um..care to point to a Xbox Live multiplayer game that can come anywhere close to the size of maps and players and sophisticated environments of RFOM?
Didn't think so. And that's version 1. Sooooooooo much more horsepower even out of the gate already.
hey but talking about empty promises..
Maybe the 2nd 360 your going to have to buy when they put the current ones become obsolete will fix that for you. Hopefully for you sake they will put 6 power chips inside and you can catch up.
You'll need them to be able to handle multiple HD streams as well ..aw heck just go and buy a PS3 and save yourself the money when another 360 version comes out next year with blu-ray built-in since HD-DVD is in the grave and already having the dirt shoveled on top.
Don't forget that free on-line that's already more powerful as well. 40 player matches are unbelievable..too bad you'll never experience that . What was that about better?
Of course Home won't be possible either on XBL. No universal hard drive support..LOL.
Consoles don't "win," they don't meet on a battlefield and fight. There is no "Console War." Every console has good and bad things about it, and they'll all be around until the next generation. That being said this looks like a cool feature, but I'm sure it won't be super fun or anything. As in not as fun as playing real game.
This kind of feature will probably be most appealing to the same demographic as The Sims, that is, female gamers. The same female gamers who will make male avatars and refuse to voicechat so they don't have to deal with slobbering fanboys trying to get into their virtual pants.
Anyway, looks fun, just like any other "create your own character" activity. The real test is what you can do with those cool characters after you've created them.
It is free. It is a game in itself. IT is much more appealing than endless menus.
It could be a big winner especially witht the download model
You dont understand do you. People really DO play games like these like oh i dont know, THE SIMS, one of the most popular games of all time. then theres MMORPG's ffs, the only comeback you have as to how dull live looks now is 'I havew a socila life'.
EVIDENTLY NOT AS YOU ARE SAT ON QJ TYPING NONSENSICAL TOSH ABOUT SOMETHING YOU DONT EVEN OWN!
SHUT your cake hole for god sake.
Nobody likes your opinion and it is not welcome here. Please vacate the PS3 section and click on something like i dont know, XBOX360?
People have a choice if they wanna pay $600. The 1.5 million users currently decided to so please on behalf of most people:
GO AWAY AND NEVER RETURN YOU INSIGNIFICANT, FILTHY HUMAN FILTH.
Good day.
Matt, why are you so cheap!!!!!! I guess that's why you don't have a PS3. he's prolly a minor.
