GDC 2007: Playstation Home announced in Phil Harrison's keynote speech |

Just about a week ago, the internet practically imploded when Sony decided to blackball the folks from Kotaku. For those who may not have been aware of what happened, it was basically a case of a bad reaction from Sony when Kotaku decided to post a rumor about this little thing called the "Playstation Home". Well, over at the ongoing Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2007 at San Francisco, it turns out that the the rumors were actually true, and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s (SCEI) Phil Harrison himself said so. And he had screenshots to boot.
In his keynote speech titled "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames", Phil Harrison noted that PlayStation Home prides itself in being the first of its kind. The free Playstation service will be available by fall of this year, and will serve as the 3D online user community service for PS3 owners everywhere.
In this environment, users will be able to create their own fully-customizable-from-head-to-toe avatar, as well as settle in a virtual "apartment". Users will be able to invite other users into this virtual living space, where they can then proceed to show off their abode's furniture, decorations, and other items. Meanwhile, the virtual apartment can also be used to share music, videos and images that you have stored in your PlayStation 3's drive with your online guests. Lastly, there's also each user's "Hall of Fame" where you will be able to display the 3D trophies that can be unlocked by achieving in-game milestones in PS3 games. Besides being a place to show off your achievements though, Home also promises to be a place where people can interact and communicate with each other. This is achieved via the use of built-in text, audio and video chat, as well as a wide range of expressive avatar emotes.
PlayStation Home will be going into its closed beta phase by spring, which will hopefully help in taking out the bugs and thus hasten the process for its expected full launch later this year. Judging from the looks of the screenshots that the 1UP crew acquired, we wonder why in the world Sony was so adamant about covering it up in the first place when the whole thing looks so very, very good.
More details to follow as they come!

"It took over two years, but the Japanese PSP finally proved itself superior to the Dreamcast by reaching a milestone that forever eluded the final Sega platform: a platinum hit. The honor of first million seller for the PSP goes to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd which, according to Capcom, has topped the million mark in shipments."
so it took the psp 2 years to match the dreamcast which lasted also around 2 yrs? wow what an accomplishment, the psp lol the psp fails like the dreamcast.

Apparently you're the one that doesn't have social life, because you obviously have nothing better to do than post unintelligent hateful comments about a competing product.
And how many patents you have to fight to get that name? Patents are for inventions or creations. Names, phrases, and expressions are for copyrights.
Judging from your sub-intelligent post, I can clearly see why you don't have a social life. Most people probably wouldn't want an idiot around who can only make retarded comments.

You say PS3 owners don't have a social life, and then you talk about Xbox Live? What's the difference? Your post really sounds like you feel threatened about this; do you WORK for MS?
Also, how could Sony prove they have these "skills" you speak of when you don't even give them a chance? Why are you even on a PS3 site when it's obvious you are a MS fanboy with no intentions of purchasing a PS3?
QJ.net really needs to turn off unregistered posting to clear out some of these moronic fanboys.

Now we can also see why the Cell was built to handle at least two full HD streams .. unfortunately the 360 is brought to it's knees with one...
So sad..but not for PS3 owners...since they also have hard drives built in too take advantage of the new world...but hey you can pay all over again for another 360 with a real hard drive, HDMI like the PS3 already has - but you'll still be limited to one HD stream so why bother.... LOL.
What an awsesome vision.. play beyond indeed..oh man spanked again. Someone at MS really should hire people from Sony to understand what vision means.
Hmm wonder if that global PSP connectivity is somehow tied into taking your world with you and sharing it as well ..LOL.. it's called vision.
Oh boy spanked again. Man does the 360 look even more boring now.

What do you have with the wiispace? interactive models.
What do you have w/ PS3 Home?
Interactive models that can walk around, use VIOP or text, go into games together, create their own homes, show off their awards, FOR FREE?
How can you change this into something bad for the ps3 you flamboyant fanboys, when it clearly is a great feature?
Ok - here is x360 fanboy.
"Wow that ps3 home is really something!! Too bad i don't have a ps3, but I have a 360 :), so let me convince myself that ps3home sucks, and is only for antisocial people so i don't regret my purchase. Then let me bash others so they follow my idea."
Too bad PS3Home >>>>>>> XBL from what i've seen so far.
***** OFF PEOPLE WITH BUYERS REMORSE.
ITS FREE!!

I also think Sony should be spending more time getting more exclusive games for the PS3 and improving and expanding its online community, as they will sell the system much better than something like this will. The features of the online community are second to the ease and popularity of that community. No matter how cool Sony makes this, it won't be enough to combat Xbox Live on its own.

Go home, turn on your ps3. You log into your online home. There is a new message on the wall that says there is a new demo you can play for killzone 3. Sweet! you stroll out of your apartment and down to the lobby.
There it is, the new arcade machine with a crowd of people around it. Everyone is talking about how great the new game looks! You say hi to a friend you were playing RFOM with the other day, chat about a few things, then go check out the demo.
You walk up to the machine and the little screen expands to full screen. Now you are playing the demo of the latest and greatest game! It's sweet, but you feel like something else.
You exit the demo, and walk to the movie theater door in the lobby. They just put up their latest release on video, spiderman 4. You walk up to the door and a little popup appears, asks you to pay the $2.00 to watch this movie. Paying lets you watch the movie 3 times, whenever you want. You hit ok, and it lets you into the theater.
You walk down, find a seat, and fullscreen again, now you are watching the movie. Streamed to you in 1080p.
Towards the end of the movie a friend of yours from the UK sends an im, they want to play a game of pool. The movie ends, and you leave the theater.
You head over to the arcade, where your friend is waiting by the pool table. Unlike the crowded bar (and the fact that your friend is 4000 miles away) when you walk up to the pool table there is always an open table. You guys play a few rounds, then you remember that you just took some new pictures of your new car, and you suggest that your friend comes back to your apartment to check them out.
You both head over to your private space, you have to allow someone in with you to check it out, or you can certainly have a public billboard with your pics and videos, like a myspace front page.
Your friend comes in your apartment, which you have decorated the walls with new pics. Oh yeah, you have a new video you took on your digital camera of a local band he has to check out. you guys sit on the couch and turn on the plasma. A quick browse of your files and you find it, then it is playing on both of your screens at the same time. Your friend really likes the band, so you go to your stereo, and select the album you ripped, then pass it to your friend. Now his system has downloaded the music from you. You have to show him one more thing, you beat a new level in Lair 2 and unlocked a pet. You both walk over to your balcony, where a little pet dragon is chillin on the railing, cleaning his toes. Bad Ass...
Your friends IRL have showed up and have been watching the past few minutes of your pshome activities. A few of them own x360s, and cry in shame... They never knew how cool the experience could be!
I only added things like the pricing structure for the movies. If you look at all the pics provided of PShome, and the peoples thought bubbles, this is all part of the experience! There is nothing like this right now. It's not second life. You can walk up to someone new, ask if they wanna do a track in motorstorm and start playing the game right from there.
Quit with the comments about 'this will hold off ps3 users until there are good games' There are good games, and great games now. If you had the money for a ps3 you would know that. Besides, this won't be out till the end of the year.
Who cares about micro transactions for things like furniture and clothes. A LOT of people will be seeing this. It'll be fun. A few bucks to decorate your online persona is fine.
You get everything for free that xbox users HAVE to pay for. In addition to that, you get countless other games, demos, and features for free. And a new social networking site, for free... Then, if you WANT to pay for it, you can buy top downloadable games, or stuff for your persona.
Mii's aren't

BTW gamerscore is the lamest thing ever. Come on, you're proud of the thousands of hours that you have been playing video games?? You want to brag about winning a new game, and all you get is some points and a new entry on your list?? How is that better than getting a fat trophy in your new apartment that everyone who walks by can see.
Why do people play the xbox 360? only for gamerscore? You play all these stupid new games forced on you because you already maxed out the games you have, wtf. If you want a high gamerscore you have to buy every game they sell you! Don't you people get that? The games arent any good, why bother. So people cheat at gamerscore, then the whole system is meaningless... What happens if someone cheats at PS home? They have a cool house with cool toys. Big deal. Everyone else doesn't have to wonder why they can't ever seem to catch up, because in PShome you have control over the way everything looks.
This is going to be a huge feature for the PS3 when it comes out. That is all there is to say. It's friggin cool, and you all wish you had it now, as do I.
:)
That's all for now.

Maybe you might have notice the increase of PSP sales and decrease of DS. PSP has been getting better games lately... Good games + Good system.
The PS3 has been out for lttle less than three months. I almost got myself to buy a 360 for Oblivion but my wish was granted... A better upgraded Oblivion for the PS3 YAY!
I would but a 360 if it merrited a buy but look at it this way... Microsoft 5 years 2 consoles later we grant you Halo... Um Halo 2!... and Um.................... Gears of War.....
Congrates for having wasted $400 bucks on a system with only a 20 gig drive, No Wi FI, No Blue tooth, and not even an HD DVD drive to boot... I weep for 360 fans

If it really works the what they explained, and it's FREE then hell yeah it's gonna be system seller. This totally takes the gaming community to a virtual level. Customisable apartments, music, avatars - this is the future!
I wonder how people will create their apartments. Surely there's gonna be some payment required to buy furnitures and stuff, which I don't mind as long as it's affordable. That waterside screenshot looks brilliant.

In addition to buying credits with real money, this would be a great way to encourage and reward online gamers.

when SONY said that its FREE ONLINE to play games. you all XBOX fanboys said, nah it won't happen...which eventually did. now that SONY release HOME way better than XBL, you guys going to say again...well you need to pay something. well we know that already...i can live with what HOME can offer may it be just those standard clothes and furniture that you get and let gamers decide what they think is worth paying and getting those extra content then im happy. as long as its FREE and as a cool as what can HOME can offer to us PS3 owners...i don't have a complaint.
its very funny when these people complain too much when PS3 is only 5 months old. they think that if they keep on bashing and make some propagandathey will persuade potential next gen owners to jump to their system. which it never did, and to their astonishment it jump to the Wii....haha.

Didn't think so. And that's version 1. Sooooooooo much more horsepower even out of the gate already.
hey but talking about empty promises..
Maybe the 2nd 360 your going to have to buy when they put the current ones become obsolete will fix that for you. Hopefully for you sake they will put 6 power chips inside and you can catch up.
You'll need them to be able to handle multiple HD streams as well ..aw heck just go and buy a PS3 and save yourself the money when another 360 version comes out next year with blu-ray built-in since HD-DVD is in the grave and already having the dirt shoveled on top.
Don't forget that free on-line that's already more powerful as well. 40 player matches are unbelievable..too bad you'll never experience that . What was that about better?
Of course Home won't be possible either on XBL. No universal hard drive support..LOL.

This kind of feature will probably be most appealing to the same demographic as The Sims, that is, female gamers. The same female gamers who will make male avatars and refuse to voicechat so they don't have to deal with slobbering fanboys trying to get into their virtual pants.
Anyway, looks fun, just like any other "create your own character" activity. The real test is what you can do with those cool characters after you've created them.

It could be a big winner especially witht the download model
